Remember that crying guy from Ivory coast during national anthem? Well, they told him right before the game that his dad passed away, but he decided to go on the pitch and play.

That was a fake news story. :( His dad died in 2004.

Mexican and South American GAF please clarify. Is puto a homophobic remark there?

I know it isn't in Costa Rica. It can mean different things in different contexts, but I've never seen it used that way here.
At least in Chile I don't think it is. I hear it daily by kids and grandparents alike. I say it myself 9000 times a day. Mostly as an "ah fucking hell/bitch" kinda moment.

Anyways.

I fell asleep but can't believe Greece kept it to a tie with a man down lol. Japan must have really sucked.

Just a note: "puto" is not related to homosexuality here in Brazil. It's a derogatory word, yes, but it stands for "whore" - specifically, a male whore.

It's definitely a problem if the word is being used in a homophobic way... But I'm preeeetty sure 99% of the Brazilians who were chanting it during the last match didn't know it could be used that way.

Mexico gaf- so is it a new thing where it's used in such a way?

Because honestly i've never heard it used as such. When the Mexicans i've been around with (family, classmates, acquaintances) use any sort of homophobic slur, they use the other words that i won't type here. Also they use doble sentido (double speak) to imply such insults.

Has the way puto/putas been used changed the past couple years? Have I just not met ppl that use it? Is it a regional difference within Mexico (some places use it as such, others don't i.e. Jalisco vs Monterrey)

Edit: apparently i've just been sheltered regarding that usage. Turns out plenty of ppl do use it to mean it like that. :0 asked the family real quickly. Huh, the more you learn.

It kind of teeters on it. I believe puto pretty much means male prostitute or the dude that is on the receiving end. Latin culture is weird, where a dude can fuck another dude but he can still hold on to his "manliness" because he's not receiving. It can kinda be used in the same ways that faggot is used in America, but who knows. Faggot in Britain means something different. Before this world cup I didn't recall Mexican fans saying "ppppuuuutooo", when I heard it first it was more comical and antagonizing as oppose to being offensive.

Edit: Also I've noticed for a while that the Latin Gay culture in America has adopted the word "gay" as opposed to homosexual or any other term because they're all pretty much offensive.

As a Mexican, I can definitely confirm it is being used as a homophobic slur. It's meant to be playful, just like the Dutch sometimes chant "alle Duitsers zijn homo" (all Germans are gay). Obviously, it's still not acceptable. Banning Mexico would be too harsh though.

Going to work an hour early so I can watch the Italy game. I'll probs take my whole break at 12 so I can watch France.

Nervous for tomorrow's games.

I'm mexican when I say "puto" it meaning is more like "coward".
Like "no seas puto", "don't be coward".

There is some people that use it to say you are "not-man" enough. I don't think they can prevent the people from saying it.

Yeah, many times it is the equivalent of 'pussy'. In this context however I think it's closer to 'faggot'.

I wonder what formation and players Prandelli will choose for the game. I really would like to see an attacking group of insigne - immobile/balotelli - cerci at some point. However, I think Pirlo defensive deficiencies might be the reason we don't see a more offensive formation.

Maybe if we win today, Pirlo will be rested and we see verrati take his role against Uruguay.

Also I know cunt is playful in the footy community, but I consider that just as offensive as pussy, puto, joto, faggot, bitch.
I never used the word cunt before neogaf told me it was ok. I always though of it as the big no-no word and it was banned on GAF and then unbanned and now I'm calling everyone a cunt all day long in football related threads and I'm cool with it. Context folks. It is everything.

I know. I'm not calling anyone out for it, I've listened to British stand-up, ha. Well my fellow putos, let's have another great ol' cunty time with tomorrow's games, I've never felt this attached to a gaf community till this cunt-of-a-thread came about. I love all you cunts.

<3 <3 This community is becoming my fav. Lots of funny folks. :3

World Cup is extra fun thanks to this com!!

So does anyone know how the Brazuca has been received by players in comparison to the Jabulani?

I saw last week an interview with Uruguay's Loco Abreu, and he said the Jabulani changed completely the direction of a shoot, so the keepers had a bad time with it, and even the headers should be done differently too, and none of these are problems now with this new ball, thank god

Still haven't seen any smashing long shots or free kicks yet though. Pirlo came close.

since we're doing tsubasa

supercampeones!

LOL, when this did happen? I watched this a lot when I was a kid but for some reason I remember it like they spent years and years on the same small tournament. I'm guessing you got the same subbed version we did in Mexico, but I don't remember national teams or anything. I loved it because the names of the players were pretty awesome. There was one character who used to be some big time retired Brazilian forward. I guess that wouldn't apply nowadays with the likes of Fred, lol.

I also remember we had a fat kid in school who would play keeper for us and we used to tease him all the time because there was a big, fat keeper in the show too. At least he was pretty good from what I remember.
Ah, that good oldschool childhood bullying amirite ;P

Ah that makes sense. hopefully Ivory Coast can make it to the last 16 cause neither Japan or Greece deserve.

I don't know what happened to them today. As much as i want to support Japan, they've done so terrible these two matches, i think Ivory Coast deserves to move on.

Today's game was especially terrible. :(

As a Liverpool fan I'm glad Suarez isn't troubled by his injury anymore. As for England, we've been shit for so long so I don't really care.

Definitely one of the better tournaments in recent history.
For me it's the best so far I think. Upsets, tons of goals. Though I guess I luck out by being asleep during the 0-0s. Some real thrillers too. Yesterday we had a life or death match between two top teams om the second day of the tournament for crissake.

So I'm greek-american, I root for both teams confident in the fact they are unlikely to play each other cuz that would require both beating long odds lol.

Anyway, my dad who was born in a small village in Greece just got home very cheerful and I asked him why he was so happy, and he said "Greece won 0-0!!!"

lol. That is Greek football fandom in a nutshell. It is more about trying to survive for one more match than having real hopes of winning. Never seen my dad happier than in 2004 when they 1-0'd their way into a Euro Cup.

I have a glimmer of hope that we can actually qualify.

We just need to beat Ivory Coast and have Japan lose, or tie with Colombia (very likely).

Ellas!

At the very least Katsouranis won't be playing next match so there is there might be a chance for us

I can respect pragmatic football because the pragmatism is supposed to get results. Euro 2004 was a ridiculously impressive achievement. going out in the group stage likely without scoring a single goal, less so.
