That's a shame, US played better and I wanted them to have the win.

However, playing the way they did the last 10 minutes almost always results in disaster. During that time Portugal was 99% of the time in control of the ball and the US defenders just kicked the ball away instead of leaving their area with grace and propriety. They gave Portugal too much time with the ball.

Hopefully Germany and the US are still the teams that advance.

It's just going to take time. Look at the NHL; MLS is still a young league and over time people will become more and more engrossed in it. With that, more money going into the league and teams which will bring in better talent.

I'd love to see MLS actually be something worth while to watch and follow. It's getting there, and I hope someday I'll finally have my soccer/hockey top league tandem to rely on for actual good sport.

MLS needs a better TV contract and not the shit one they signed with NBC

How do people become fans? By learning about the game through osmosis. Being dicks to anyone because they're interested in a sport they don't know a ton about is shameful.

People are dumb as shit. Somehow what they like being popular is a bad thing. "Oh noes, can't let murca like football. it'll kill the sport!"

Same holds true for sports teams, video games, books, movies, etc.

People that bought a Vita or liked cancelled TV shows would have loved for them to have a bandwagon.

If it takes World Cups for US to get interested in soccer so be it. It just gives you a bigger pool of players to steal.

Shit that's too complex... pretty sure someone's gonna screw up the maths and USA will move on by mistake and no one will notice. If it's a computer, well, where are the computer chips sourced from? Exactly.

Intel and AMD both American companies, this must mean we're moving on.

ARM Holdings is British, let's hope they don't do the calculations on a mobile phone or tablet.

LA spin-off of Arsenal owned by Stan Kroenke seems to be a rumor doing the rounds. don't know if it would be that specific club or a totally new expansion club + new stadium, etc., though.

Kronke owns Colorado. Garber is not giving him a second team.

And all this talk of having a larger talent pool to choose from is great. But the key will be how we develop youth talent and how the MLS academies churn out talent. Population doesn't mean shit if you cannot develop players the right way. MLS is getting better at it thankfully.

These points are exactly why people are disappointed. Going into the world cup I thought the U.S. had zero chance of making out of the group, and they were just 30 seconds away from doing it. I'm happy that the U.S. is improving, and if they make it out I expect them to lose almost immediately. It would have still been nice to see them in the next round.

There are different ways to take it, I guess. I just remember 20 years ago hoping for a goal. Then hoping for a tie. Then hoping for a win. Now, I'm expecting wins, and am disappointed by ties. But I'm never disappointed with our performance. Team USA has come a long, long way. I don't want to take this for granted.

What group is tougher?
Hehe, I was trying to be conservative. PEACE.

Cool Facts: Game of War has been a hit since July 2013
About the MLS being popular in America: Their was a Freakonomics podcast about the popularity of Soccer in the US that was released a few weeks ago. I remember them saying that a world cup win would probably not cause soccer to become as mainstream as hockey, basketball, football, and baseball, but over the next 20-30 years, soccer could grow enough to be considered popular in America. However, the MLS would need more star power, more money, and better development programs if the league really wants to grow.

I dunno, even though there are a number of ways for the USA to advance, I'd say it doesn't look too good right now. Basically, they need to find a way to tie Germany which won't be easy. Ghana v Portugal is gonna be a wide-open festival of goals.

Not with that injured mess off a Ronaldo, Eder being useless and Nani being Nani.

I don't think people are trying to just completely shit on the US for no reason. I'm not. It's just the fact that people aren't even recognizing what is actually happening in this group. Portugal is WAY weaker than anyone expected. It changes the whole dynamic of the group. The US winning against Ghana in of itself isn't a very strange result but rather the fact that they were outclassed for 80 minutes of the match and capitalized on 2 mental lapses by the Ghanaian squad. Anyone who watched that game knew Ghana was the superior squad. The result with Germany-Ghana was unexpected. Most were expecting a Germany blowout (lol you're stupid if you were expecting that but another discussion for another time) so the tie was surprising but more importantly, the level of play was WAY above any of the other squads in this group. The Portugal-USA game was important as a test of the Portuguese's strength in the group and to see if the American's were good enough to advance.

What I have concluded from the 4 matches thus far is, Germany and Ghana are the most skilled squads in this group. That doesn't mean that the US isn't deserving of second, they squeaked out the win when it mattered and that's what champions do so congrats to them. But come on, recognize the group for what has been shown thus far.

Edit: Whoever said the US is not the best at basketball, are you fucking kidding me? US is beast at 5 v 5 hoops yo.

Ghana should have beaten Germany. Would love to see underdongs advance but i'm really hoping we advance. Just seen the South Korea/Algeria game. Wheres all the gaffers suggesting CAF should have one less qualifier?

Had some dinner, did some dishes, still so totally beat up about that ending!

At least there is light at the end of the tunnel and it's not completely done for the US. And Vandy Baseball is going to the College World Series and Williams got 3 and 4 in F1 today, so overall not a bad sporting weekend!

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
Now I know next to nothing about soccer/futbal, but was the American goalie (Howard?) really damn good or is it just me? He seemed to be absolutely on top of shit for the most part.

Also, what's up with all of the condescending bullshit aimed at US fans? I almost never watch sports except for the Olympics and World Cup. I would probably actually watch soccer more regularly if there was a good US league and I knew people irl who actually watched the sport. Why does that make my opinions and interest invalid? Fuck off.

they already have one with better dedicated TV slots from 2015.

I thought MLS attendance was doing pretty decent numbers recently?
yes it is. There is room for improvement. But clearly you are doing something right if you are the eighth best attended league in the world. Well above some other countries where it is the number one sport.

It's more than that. There are 152 league-wide international player slots. They started out divided evenly at 8 per team, but teams are allowed to trade them, so there is some disparity now.

He's always on top of shit.

I'm so glad he's at Everton (the team I support).

No one is really saying take LeBron James and move him to soccer and he's instantly goat. What we are saying is that if those guys played soccer their entire lives the talent pool would be far larger than it is now to choose from. Eventually some of those players would be on the same caliber as Messi, Ronaldo, etc.

It really isn't hard to understand that different sports require different builds.

A basketball player 99% of the time requires to be tall to succeed. A cyclist needs to be short and so on.

It's like saying any American football player can play football/soccer at a young age instead and succeed. It doesn't work like that.

Of course, the talent pool will be bigger if football/soccer is going to be a bigger national sport. The point is that football/soccer isn't just about athleticism. It's also about awareness of space, positioning, anticipation of the ball etc. in addition to fitness.

If you're interested, watch the MLS man. What's stopping you?

I'm just very skeptical that this will happen no matter how US performs in a World Cup. That's it...

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
Attendance is doing well, but that really doesn't mean much when their TV deal is a fucking pittance compared to all the other sport leagues in America.

Just signed a new deal. I *think* it might actually be more lucrative/at least on the same level as the NHL?

TV ratings definitely need to improve though

I'm not against people who are fans. But lets be honest here. Those are clearly minority :)

I can bet that many US "fans" knew only one played on the pitch during US - Portugal game and his name was Ronaldo. (And he was one of the worst :))

Well you heard it here, folks. Time to stop rooting for the US unless you're a "real" soccer fan.

lol

You're right though. As soon as we get eliminated I'll go back to not caring about soccer. But that's mostly just because we have several other big sports here that are popular and (IMO) more interesting.

Friedel was a good goalie too. If there's anything the US did well, its goalies. Probably because our defense is so bad. PEACE.

it's because they can use their hands brah

good to know, but i plan on getting orlando city season tickets anyway, which i am terribly excited about. i'll finally have a top league local club to call my own :')

I think the development is a huge issue. U.S. football gets this massive free development by the way of college. Every year the draft introduces new football players who have at least developed for three years at the college level, and the NFL doesn't even have to pay a dime. They have quite the advantage on every other sports league in the U.S.

A: Oh my god, people recognize me as a professional soccer player.

He actually made more mistakes in this match than I'm used to seeing from him.

Terrific keeper even at his age, very happy for him to be between the sticks for USMNT. (Less happy to see him play at the club level tho...)
