I actually don't think he did it with malice, he just stepped in too far and hit the guy's leg with the sole (cleats) by accident.

Ref sees it and interprets it as malicious, so it's a red. I think due to lack of malicious intent but unfortunate outcome, it's more of a yellow. But surely, with the way he steps in and on the guy's leg, you can see how the ref could interpret it as such.
