Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 9: F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5

Just wanted to say Shovel Knight is SO GOOD. You best all be playing it. I kind of ignored it at first because "more retro-looking indie games, lulz" (I know, shit attitude), but luckily I read the impressions here and watched GameXplain's preview and saw the light.

It's a SUPER-TIGHT and WELL-PACED platformer that organically teaches without resorting to tutorials. It's consistently inventive from one screen to the next. Feels as though Zelda 2, Mega Man, Ducktales and NES Castlevania all continued to evolve and at some point converged together, with a Mario 3-style world map... and they were then further refined with a liberal dose of new ideas, like checkpoints you can sacrifice for loot, and a risk/reward mechanic where you have unlimited lives but drop treasure that will be lost forever if you don't reclaim it next turn (think the soul stains in Demon's Souls). The game is challenging but feels fair since you always know what you did wrong and how to do better. There are also abundant options to stack the odds in your favor, if you so choose. Very satisfying at the most intrinsic level of action/reaction.

I'm playing the WiiU version and will probably double-dip on the 3DS version, which I hear has an amazing 3D effect. Looking forward to it!

Mega Man in Smash was based directly on his NES sprite.

Therefore, I posted a picture of Simon Belmont's NES sprite.
1. Only his animations are based on his NES/Mega Man 9&10 sprite, his actual model is based on his promotional art/Mega Man 7&8 sprites. If Mega Man's model was based on the in-game NES/9/10 sprites he would look really janky.

2. Simon Belmont is not comparable to Mega Man in the way you're trying to do it. Belmont has a modern design that's clearly different than his classic design. Mega Man's classic and modern designs are the same...

3. That Simon Belmont sprite has no details, I'm assuming you mean you want him to look how he did in his NES promotional materials, in which case I don't. I wouldn't really care for him to be in the game at all, but if he was in I'd hope he had his redhead design. Either that or have Sakurai heavily modify his look so that he doesn't look like a Conan/He-Man ripoff. That design is such a product of the 80's.

Really, if we're going for a Castlevania character, the choice is the one true constant in the series: Drac himself.

Let me dream.

Simon would be kind of tricky to implement. If you interpret his NES sprite with the Conan/He-Man look of the promo materials, many casuals would think he's just that -- Conan or He-Man! On the other hand, if you go with the redhead PS2 version (which I wouldn't mind -- he looks cool), you risk alienating the hardcore Nintendo fans who'd prefer their version of Simon. And then you have the small matter of Konami probably preferring Gabriel gets top billing, in light of his recent games (yes I know Simon was in the 3DS title, but you know what I mean).

Soma Cruz wouldn't be a bad choice. Star of two Castlevania games, harkens back to Metroidvanias, Konami probably doesn't give a toot what happens to him....

So one of the most popular Miiverse posts in the Smash Bros. community is Rosalina with some rather large knockers.
(can't say I'm surprised)

What really catches my eye is what's going down in the comments section...

I don't see the pic you are referring to.

Edit: I must be blind and tired.

This is the main reason I think Snake deserves his spot more than Simon. Aside from MGS being Konami's biggest franchise, Snake (whether it be Solid/Naked/etc.) is always the main character of Metal Gear Solid games. He is literally the face of Metal Gear Solid. Simon, however, is one of maaaaaaany Castlevania protagonists and in recent times he's not any more important than he other protagonists. Being "the original" like Marth/Olimar/Ness* is a concept that only applies to first party characters. Third party characters have to be a consistent presence and be the clear representative of their series and company. Snake is, Simon isn't.

*I know Ness isn't technically the original Mother protagonists, but to the vast majority of people he was, which is why he got in Smash 64 over Ninten.

Hope we get a new stage...

Y'know I've begun to worry we're gonna get gimped on stages, like only 25 in each version not counting the shared ones.

I think you're overlooking something.

Mega Man is one of the many Mega Man protagonists, including the not pictured Zero and ZX dudes.

Simon is clearly the main progatonist of Castlevania overall, in the same way that Mega Man is the main protagonist of Mega Man overall. Such is inarguable.

All of those dudes are "Mega Man" in the mind of the public, though. They have their own individual names, but in form and function, they're all Mega Man.

Mega Man X, Mega Man Volnutt, Mega Man Star Force, Mega Man EXE...

Well, there's Simon Belmot, Trevor Belmont, Richter Belmont, Juste Belmont, Julius Belmont, etc. Simon was effectively the original, and he represents the entire Belmont clan. I understand that there are also a fuckton of non-Belmont protagonists in the series, but still, Simon is clearly the main guy. If there were to be any Castlevania rep, which I believe there definitely should be, it's got to be him.

This is perfect. It's also how I'm feeling tonight. Mondayton incoming, I can feel it.

Also, is that Dexter? Never watched the show.
It's from the beginning of the first episode. And you should definitely watch it. It's on Netflix.

What's going to be tonight, everybody?

AT, stage, item, character, feature, trophy, game mode, something I haven't put down, or disappointment?

I think we're getting a look at a stage again. Hopefully not like Friday's though >_>

I didn't overlook that at all. In fact I was waiting for you to bring it up so I could offer a rebuttal.

The other Mega Man games are spinoffs, plain and simple. Just like Luigi's Mansion is a spinoff of the Mario series and Shadow the Hedgehog is a spinoff of the Sonic series, X, Legends, Battle Network and Starforce are all spin offs of the Mega Man series. They exist alongside the main series, but they aren't part of them.

Nobody but Mario has been the main protagonist in the main Mario series. Likewise, in the main Mega Man series, Mega Man is the ONLY main protagonist. Castlevania is a different story, because in the main Castlevania series there are more protagonists than Simon. Simon does not own his own series in the way that Mega Man does, he's just one of the many main protagonists. Such is unarguable.

I would argue that X Zero and ZX series are sequels rather than spin offs.
Semantics.

The point is there hasn't been a "Mega Man" game where Mega Man himself isn't the sole main character, in the same way that there has been a "Super Mario" game where Mario isn't the sole main character. Neither has there been a "Pac-Man" or "Sonic" game where they aren't the main characters. Ms. Pac-Man and Shadow the Hedgehog are spinoffs.

The other Mega Man games shouldn't be put off simply as spin-offs. The original Mega Man series was put on such a hiatus that it seemed like it wasn't coming back until Mega Man 10 and 11 happened much later. Yes, the other extended series (X, Battle Network, and Starforce) starred different Mega Men, but they were what Mega Man grew to become. Apart from the lead character issue, it sounds like you would argue that all 3D Mario's and New Super Mario Bros games aren't true Mario games either since they weren't Super Mario Bros. 4, 5, 6, etc. That seems a little odd to me, since these newer series are what Mario is now...

The same eye of the public likely just see Belmont as a whip slinging dude.
