Official Destiny Alpha Withdrawal Thread

Bungie just posted a picture of Destiny on their facebook, with a Titan lvl 21. I wasnt sure if the cap was definitely 20. I'm kinda happy it isnt.

One of the theories is that the cap is 20 but that the Motes of Light that one gains become the point of progression after that. So 20 wouldn't be a hardcap but a soft one and Motes of Light determine the level after that point.

I.E. Experience Points cap at level 20 and each level after that is acquired by doing whatever earns Motes of Light.

What are Motes of Light? Some kind of currency?

It's hard to say if it's currency but I suppose it could be looked at that way? I believe it was shown on some gear and weapons as a requirement in order to purchase and/or equip them. I'd have to search around for the video.

My backlog will easily hold me over until it's Beta time (Batman: AA, Mass Effect 2, and Borderlands 2 are up next), but you know - I think it's best for me to limit the time I spend on the BETA so that by the time September rolls around, I'll be in full thrist.

Still miss this though:

I hope they stick with 20 level caps for each game. Destiny maxes at 20, Comet at 40, D2 at 60, etc.

endgame currency, makes lateral moves with your character's growth

I see. How do you earn them? Complete strikes, raids and such?

Going to go out in a limb and say that Motes of Light are earned after completing the Vault of Glass. Possibly .25 or .33 for every successful run until you earn enough. It could also be one MoL per run, but thatd be too easy methinks. The haul from 19-20 seems like itd take more time than a single Raid.

Why would you guys delete the Alpha? Throw that baby on while you do laundry and reminisce.

vault of glass will probably drop motes, but there is no way it's the only way to get them

Oh definitely not. Maybe theyd be offered through bounties, high level strikes or certain events. If the "softcap" is 20 though, i dont see Motes being so abundant that you can reach, say level 25 just by grinding Raids and bounties for a week.

Bungie's progression system in Reach was fairly good with its longevity. Hopefully the Mote system is just as long-lived

Has it occurred to anyone that there might be a relationship between spheres of light and motes of light?

In the pre-alpha, players had levels above the level cap when they had higher level gear.

Gear doesn't have levels anymore though, as of the alpha, just their stats, but I'm sure this functionality still exists.

Is Dragon's Crown supposed to be fun? Trying to keep my mind off of Destiny. But besides the awesome art style of this game. It's mind-numbing boring.

Absolutely loved the Alpha, couldn't get enough of it. Can't wait for Beta and Full Release! :)

Hi everyone!

Looks like I'm not the only one who recently had their account approved. I've been lurking for quite a while, wanting to share in the excitement of Destiny. It's time. The Alpha was fantastic but for me it lacked jolly cooperation, so feel free to add me on PSN! I would love to be a part of DestinyGAF.

I was wondering why I'd received a completely random PSN Friend Request last night! :)

Cambridge signing in, so pretty much Hamilton also :D
Goddamn, NZGAF really starting to represent now!

That's a dangerous thing to say...

Haha yeah, I jumped into the Bungie group and added a couple of PSN people from AUS/NZGAF. I've never been much of a multiplayer guy until now (apart from WoW a few years ago) so my friend list is a bit lacking. See you in the Beta! :D

I enjoyed it in small play sessions every few days. I liked it!

Welcome to GAF!

An interesting conversation was brought up just before on Bungie.net's Destiny Forum and I thought I'd echo it here: Is anyone here who's part of DGAF a parent/expecting parent, and how do you/how are you planning to allocate your game time for a game like Destiny that seems like it'll require a lot of investment?

Me, personally, I'm pushing 30 and have a wife of a year who will probably want to start having kids in the next 12-18 months. I'm very uncertain as to what will happen, coming from having a ludicrous amount of free time for gaming while juggling the typical time spent on relationship-maintaining stuff, to what things will be like having a newborn to look after.

After the kids go to sleep, play until it's my own self appointed Bedtime. For activities that require others like Strikes and Raids.. the key is finding other people who either attempt those activities in the time frame that you have free as a parent or find people who are ok with waiting until you're available.

What this has meant for me in MMO's (which typically require far more time and dedication for the average player) is that I simply can not and do not attempt to join "hardcore" guilds. I look for like minded Guilds that will be understanding of my commitments. If I can't find that, then I would just play what I can solo. I've never had that happen though.

With regards to Destiny.. I've got two groups of gaming acquaintences that typically game during the evenings. So I'm already set.

Edit:

Newborns aren't that time consuming all in all. They're time interrupting, if that makes sense. When you come to that point, try to work out a shift where your spouse gets rest earlier while you watch your child into the evening. At that stage they sleep, eat, and dirty diapers. So it's pretty simple just to stop for a few minutes and tend to them then they're back to sleep. Crawling and Toddler stages are much harder on game time.

Damn, science needs to develop the technology to skip kids from birth to 5 years old. Or at least get kids to where they can talk, and actually be fun ~_~

I'm probably going to go ga-ga when I actually have a kid but right now I have very little interest. Disposable income FTW.

It's understandable. And yes your feelings will change when that little person comes around. They really are a marvel. But by all means enjoy that disposible income while you can because kids do cost.

Super-early-congrats!

And I'll say congrats again when the time comes!

Honestly, much props to all the parents who still find time to keep their gaming interest alive! I've been helping my sister and bro-in-law this week by babysitting my nieces and nephew (ages 10, 2 and 1). If I had to do that all day, I don't know when I would play. Gotta keep your eyes on the little ones at all times lol.

Is anyone worried about doing the pre-load digital copy? The possibility at Midnight it won't be loaded. It doesn't seem like any pre-order bonus are worth it let alone sitting in line somewhere or waiting for Amazon to deliver.

The cap I think is likely 20, and they have a system in the game that dictates what your item level (a la FFXIV) is after that.

I don't think motes of light will determine level after 20.It can be used for currency to purchase cloaks/emblems from the speaker in the alpha right? Currency related item being attached to level progression would not make sense. I say motes of light can only be obtained lets say when you fill up your exp bar when you are at level cap, or by some other difficult means. Can't be easy to get.

Here is my hypothesis. So in the alpha you could see some of the legendary items that were available. You'll notice a stat in there called Light. Only armor had them, not weapons. Lvl 20 gear is the only one that had that specific stat as far as I've seen. So based on that its a stat that comes into play once you are at the level cap. The higher the total amount of light you have the higher your so called item level. Hardcap on "item" level my guess is 30.

Endgame content and higher levels of strikes will be gated to the so called "item" level, so one can't just attempt to do a really high one and get carried. Lets say a strike with a difficulty that is gated at lvl 26, then you need to be say within 3 lvls of to attempt it. Only way to attempt harder endgame content is to get better gear. Who knows where the raid falls into all of this. Haven't thought that far :P

What do you guys think?

Ugh... I need the beta so bad...
