I mean, let's go over the evidence, because it's nothing if not incredibly convincing and irrefutable. First of all, the "?!" I don't know about you guys, but I've studied English my entire life having lived in America, and I can tell you as an expert that question marks denote many things, including suggestions contrary to statements of fact. So they wouldn't have put that there if not for her just being an alt.

Secondly, every single one of her moves is the same. There's clones and there's clones, you know? Whereas Roy would be Solid Snake, Lucina is Solidus, she's exactly the same in every single way. It's so similar, I believe that even Sakurai is confused. He probably created her as an alt but, as we know, doesn't speak english, so his explanation doesn't really hold up to scrutiny. The part about the sword difference also doesn't make sense, because as we established already, she's just an alt costume, so that's further evidence Sakurai doesn't really know what he's talking about.

I'm just saying, I've played a lot of Smash Bros. so I'm pretty sure I know when something smells fishy and this reeks of the ocean.

Zoroark still has to make an appearance though, since all of the Pokémon in the Greninja trailer are in the game - Zoroark is in the trailer. Or was he a Pokéball in Brawl? I don't remember

Comments:

- GIVE TAKAMARU PLS. (Tangent: I'm really upset that the Japan Time Podcast group from last night fed into the bullshit "we have too many sword people" line and of course spread that sentiment to other people in the chat. =/)
- Medusa is a "dark" clone of Palutena. Would specialize in offense over maneuverability as well as stripping mobility from others.
- Ridley's there because Ridley really.
- Venusaur and Blastoise are Brawl's Ivysaur and Squirtle evolved so as to compete with Charizard and receive their own Mega forms as final smashes. Would be DLC optimally.

The 39 character count for Brawl used by Sakurai included the two Samus, Zelda/Sheik and 3 starter Pokemon, so, if you're comparing it to that, I think they should count separately, doesn't matter if they're in the same box or not.

I like it generally, but would having 3 Pokemon as DLC really be a good idea? If they keep the starters and Mewtwo, I think it's more likely that the latter would be in the base game with the former as DLC.

Would love to see those 2 giants running and jumping around smash style. Would be hard for me to resist playing Blastoise a ton

I got the reference. I'm trying my best not to even bring him up. Especially after yesterday. I did however, laugh out loud a little upon reading it. And I had a douchey satisfied grin when I saw the PotD confirming what most of us already knew.

Same here, I didn't even knew some of them in melee, but that only added to the excitement of discovering new franchises. Thats always a good think for a gamer.
 
Now I'm thinking about how awesomely original Ivysaur and Squirtle were. I do hope they have some kind of redemption whether it be in those forms or their evolutions

Hmm, I see what you're saying. Really though, I don't even know what to think regarding doing rosters anymore which is why I've really toned down on trying them. All I'm really in for anymore is Takamaru
and Mike Jones if by some otherworldly sorcery someone at Sora remembers that StarTropics was a thing

  • The only plausible Animal Crossing character is the protagonist with boy/girl variations (pre-Gematsu)
  • Mega Man and Pac-Man are the only plausible third-party newcomers (pre-Gematsu)
  • Little Mac is the only Brawl Assist Trophy with any chance of being playable
  • Miis will be customizable characters and not based off of Wii Sports/etc.

All of those seem fairly safe. Ridley and Animal Crosser were specifically not included last time though, so I could see them being skipped again for the same reasons. Thing is, that amount already seems like a lot of new comers. I wouldn't be surprised if we got less.

All of these would be cool and maybe a little feasible, but I just don't really see most of them happening. Maybe one of the retro characters. Either licensing issues or characters being too obscure. Don't really know anything about those last series, but they seem interesting.

I got a few, but mostly as a result of just guessing everyone I could think of, I suppose.

[This was a full year before we got FE:A in my region, and well before X and Y were announced, so Johns there about that stuff.]

Character count will be weird this game. Do we go by number of slots on the character select screen? What if mii fighters take up one slot (and then you pick one of the 3 types)? What if they're 3 slots, do they still count as one? Do we count male/female as different?

I think the easiest is number of slots on char select screen (+2 if mii fighters take up one slot). Is this an agreed upon convention?

We usually go by number of unique movesets. Melee had 26 unique movesets, and Brawl had 39.

(Yes, Lucina does count as a unique moveset. She's not different by much, but she's still different.)

I wouldn't call that embarrassing, up until yesterday, I was convinced the only way Lucina was making it in as a playable character was as an alt costume for Marth when she's wearing the mask. I didn't think she'd make it in as a clone

You know what's going to be weird? Having the 3DS version first and all the implications that go with that.
- We'll know essentially everything there is to know concerning the playable characters
- mains will have been chosen/favorites will be known
The fake roster leaking culture will have to rest months before the game hits Wii U

I'm not counting alt or female/male version. only based on number of move sets like Sakurai did with Brawl. 39 movesets (39 characters tho)

Sakurai already emphasized that he counted those Mii as 3 separate characters in Digital Event. Gunner, Brawler and Swordfighter. So far, we have 38 characters at the moment.
