well tbf what would make lyn or any sword user from fire emblem really unique ? (outside of certain weapons having properties) the game is basically i use weapons to hit you which is probably why every fe character outside probably robin shares the counter special.
ive seen people throw around the lyn sprite (but really what makes people so sure shes gonna play like that)
Well, if she received an unique moveset, they'd have to take inspiration from her battle animations. Several of Marth's animations do, even if many are original too, same goes to Ike.
Of course, I guess she could have been just a Marth clone or whatever. But, if she were to get an original moveset, her original appearance would give much better material for an unique character than Chrom's.
what chrom could have introduced gameplay wise was that the fact he (luci or hell even robin could have done it) was that he was one of the few lords that could actually change classes they could have allowed him to use a spear, given him a bow/and arrow and made his swordplay more refined like marths but with similar strength to ikes
No transformations though. That basically kills the class changing concept. At best, we could have gotten Great Lord Chrom with the Falchion and a lance rather than Robin.
Lucina is intentionally supposed to emulate Marth in Awakening. That's one of the defining aspects of her character. So it's no surprise that she plays like him in Smash.
Chrom doesn't have that burden upon him. Yes, he's another swordsman Lord, so he could of also been another Marth spin-off, but he doesn't have some already built-in precedent to live up to like Lucina does.
"Story" doesn't make development easier or harder though. It'd take more resources to make Chrom unique in Smash than what Lucina takes to be added as a clone. Lucina just has a better excuse to be a clone than Chrom would have.
I'm not defending Roy's clone status. He should of been more unique.
Roy wouldn't have been in the game at all if he weren't a clone. It's not like they decided to implement Roy, got lazy, and he turned out to be a clone. According to the old Melee site, they decided to add more characters to please the fans, but there was only time and resources to add clones, reusing the animations and body types of other characters, not fully original ones.
They even specifically mention that Ganondorf only was added because his body type coincidentally matched Captain Falcon's.
A.) Chrom is nowhere near Ike's level of strength and modifying his moveset to accommodate him would just not have worked as well since it wouldn't have been satisfying to hit someone at every instance like they got slammed by a damn truck, which is one the reasons why a lot of people loved Ike's moveset in the first place.
In Awakening, Ike (Hero) only has one extra max str point compared to Chrom (Great Lord), and both have the same max speed.
Ike was an all around balanced character back in Path of Radiance. His speed did drop in Radiant Dawn, but it was average at worst. Chrom's str growth is actually higher than Radiant Dawn's Ike (55 vs 60). I don't see how you're getting that Chrom would hit with much less strength than Ike. And that's game mechanics, storywise, they often talk about how Chrom accidentally breaks walls while training, which suggests that brute force is supposed to be his main point.
In terms of some clones that would be nice to have in a "clone or nothing" situation, K Rool could probably be made into a Bowser clone, Ridley as a Charizard clone, Medusa as a ZSS clone maaaybe and Mewtwo as a Lucario clone.
Obviously I'd prefer all those characters to have their own unique moveset, but if it came down to being a clone or not being in, I think those could work.
Half of those couldn't really work. The point of clones is reusing skeleton and animations, even if partially.Captain K.Rool might look like Bowser, but he couldn't really use any of Bowser's shell animations, so it'd require a huge rework and they might as well make an original character. Ridley and Charizard just have very different builds.
Still, if they wanted to add Medusa as a clone, I think Palutena is a much more obvious choice. They're from the same series, and she conveniently has 8 completely unique special moves ready for use that aren't in her default moveset, which could be given to a clone. Mewtwo as a Lucario clone could work due to how aura based Lucario's moveset is in Smash, but it'd be odd considering how he already had a different moveset in the Smash series itself. Still, I'd take that over Mewtwo not returning.
Why do so many people belive we're getting Katamaru, anyway? Where did that come from?
I think Sakurai directly mentioned him back in the Melee days (although just as a character who wouldn't be added to Melee), and that ended up popping up in Western sites during the pre-Brawl hype. More recently though, there was the Nintendo Land minigame and release of his game in the Virtual Console outside of Japan. There's nothing specifically pointing to his presence in Smash though.
