I need help selecting a complementary console for my PS4

Wii U is indisputably the best 'secondary' system. A vast variety of games and experiences that you can't find anywhere else and a focus on local multiplayer and free online. You won't regret it.

Well one question you have to ask yourself is with sales the way they are, how long do you think Nintendo will be supporting the Wii U? If it truly is a toss up for you then the odds are that you'll continue to get the games you like on the XB1 longer than you would on the Wii U. Remember, Nintendo is already talking about moving into Quality of Life products. At least some of the resources that would have gone into creating the games you like are being redirected there.

console? Wii U
non console? PC
not unless you really really really really want the few exclusives? XBONE

Wii U is a VERY solid console at the moment. Great catalog and arguably the strongest "known" 2015. Grabbing a Wii U at this second and all "must-have" games will keep you in gaming bliss for months.

grabbing a solid PC ensures you never ending indie and "PC" titles (Divinity OS may be the best game I've played all year). Not to mention depending on the PC even taking over main duty for some of your multi-plat games. PC is unquestionably the strongest platform right now, the only catch being that it's also a bit more expensive (probably ~$600-900 depending for a decent gaming rig)

XBONE has exclusives, and a bunch even right now. But it doesn't have the time on market that the Wii U has so the Wii U currently just has more (and is $100 cheaper). If you REALLY want those exclusives... well then get the system. BUT at the same time waiting a year or so until the situation is more comparable to Wii U (time on market) will only benefit you more.

WiiU, there's less overlap than between the PS4 and Xbone so you would be getting more totally unique experiences for it. Plus it's cheap and it looks like it already has a pretty good library with a good amount of games coming out for it in the near future.

Wii U for sure. PS4/Wii U is my combo and it's amazing. After using the gamepad for myself, it has seriously won me over. It's hard to go without it.

Mario Kart 8 is amazing. Can't wait for Smash, Bayonetta 2 and Xenoblade X.

I always thought that the Sony/Nintendo combo was the best one for me personally based on their exclusive IPs,their past libraries and their development teams.

I still haven't bought either current gen console though but i plan to buy a PS4/WiiU/3DS sometime next year (i have a Vita.)If it wasn't for Bloodborne (the only true current gen game that interests me) i would have only planned on buying a WiiU/3DS.

Sorry if OT but if you money is not an issue you can build a PC and get the widest library in all of gaming, and that is not even mentioning emulation. If a console I'd say a Wii U. Unless a MS franchise holds a particular allure for you.

To be fair, if money was not an issue, he wouldn't be purchasing one system :-)

As somebody with all three, I would definitely say get the Wii U. I've always said it's a horrible primary console but a fantastic secondary console. The XB1 and PS4 experiences are simply too similar, and Wii U will offer some great, unique, incredibly-polished Nintendo experiences.

I'm planning on getting am xbone later this year as a secondary console (already have ps4/wii u), and my big fear is that two or three years into its life they'll pull a xbox 360 and only bring out 1 or 2 exclusives a year which will just be sequels of there biggest selling game.

The Wii U is a no-brainer here as it makes a great 2nd console for just about anyone. There's not a lot of retail games on it, but what's out there is great stuff. NSMBU, NSLU, 3D World, DKCR Tropical Freeze, Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, and Mario Kart 8 are all great games. You've got some great games on the horizon with Xenoblade Cross, new Zelda, Yoshi, Toad, and Smash. Then there's the virtual console. It's true you can emulate old games for free, but the virtual console offers a level of stability and perfection coupled with convenience and comfy couch (all things attainable elsewhere, but worth the price of admission to me). I don't buy everything on virtual console like I may have done for the Wii, when this sort of thing still had a novelty effect, but I happily by 2p stuff I can play with my wife and kids (not to mention the joy of showing my kids my favorite classic games).

For most people, I believe owning both XB1 and PS4 will lead to one console going mostly unplayed. The Wii U will never develop the large library of its big brothers, but it's going to offer those Nintendo gems you won't want to miss. Personally, I'm also hoping we see smaller mid-tier devs use the Wii U to keep development costs lower the same way you saw some smaller interesting games sticking to Wii last gen.

I have all 3 and owning a PS4 and X1 has felt sort of redundant thus far. I am sure that will change with time, but the Wii U has an incredibly solid library right now. Wii U would be my pick unless you really love the MS exclusives.

imo, wiiu.

what i plan to do to complement my PS4 though is getting a Vita just waiting for the thirst to subside. i would consider wiiu but when it gets cheap as fuck because i will only play some exclusives on it, same as x1(just for killer instinct mostly, loved this game on my snes)

Most people here are missing a key point. The OP really does want to play the XB1 exclusive games too. That is why he can't decide. In fact he said the following in regards to XB1 games...
the games I mentioned before are really dope in my eyes
So simply saying that there are good games to play on the Wii U really doesn't change anything because that has already been taken into account. Another potential real deciding factor would be price, but the OP took that off the table too.

The only thing left that I can think of to differentiate the consoles would be their future support. On one hand you have Microsoft who knows that their best way to compete is through exclusives and have recommitted themselves to making/buying exclusive games and content. On the other side you have Nintendo who has said that they want to diversify by offering up Quality of Life products. Because of this the odds are that the OP will be far more pleased at what Microsoft offers up at the next E3 for the XB1 over what Nintendo showcases for the Wii U.

hahahahahaha

sure hope the OP likes fable

Edit: To give this post a little more substance, we've already seen a lot of what Nintendo is offering for the Wii U. We've also seen how microsoft supports it's consoles late in their life, judging by the xbox 360. Judging either company by promises as opposed to the actual games released is a fool's errand.

Wii U is the "correct" choice but if OP really has no interest in MK or Smash Bros. then I'll go against the grain and say Xbox One.

MK+Smash is really about 50% of the reason to get a Wii U.

I'm personally getting a Wii U at some point in the future to compliment my PS4.

The Xbox ONE has a lot of similar games to the PS4. The Wii U has Nintendo games, and the odd third party exclusive here and there. I won't be picking up a Wii U this year, I think, but sometime early next year. Between my PS3, PS4, Vita, 3DS, and PC, I have a shit ton of games to work through before I add another console to my list. I'm slowly chipping through my PS3 and Vita backlogs. My PS4 backlog is already 20+ games deep as well. My Steam backlog is also stupidly large. I think my 3DS, since I just bought it this year, has the smallest backlog of all of my consoles/handhelds, but it's slowly growing already. I'm currently trying to beat Zelda and NSMB2.

PS4 and Wii U is the best console combo imo. There are enough exclusives on the Wii U that make it worthwhile a purchase now especially if you can find one at a good price.

WiiU and / or PC are the only valid choices, unless there are Xbone exclusives you really, really want to play. Otherwise the PS4 and Bone are too similar, and you already have the better of the two machines.

Don't like Nintendo games? PC and PS4 all you need. Don't like PC? Ps4 and WiiU all you need. Don't like WiiU or PC? Then you're a picky mofo aren't you :D

Imo it's too early to buy a second current gen console, there's not too much to justify the need.
Since you have a PS4 buy now Vita + Playstation Plus(or a 3ds, but PS4 + Vita + PS+ would be perfect) and then buy Wiiu or XB1 later.

Following your logic and focusing on what OP mentions, next E3 is just Zelda vs. Halo.

Well if you got to have a console, then yes Wii U sounds like the right choice for you.

But another option I HIGHLY recommend is PS Vita.

The Vita does get a very different gaming experience.

And to be honest ability to game anytime anywhere... well it's just hard to explain how good the Vita is to people. It's just like one of those things you need to experience to appreciate sometimes.

And it not just on the go, the compelling content on the device, many time I just turn on my Vita and game instead of my 360, PS3 or PS4...

Might consider it in the running...

If money isn't really an issue for you as you say then you'll probably be able to pick up all 3 systems by the end of this cycle anyway. The question then becomes which system do you want to play the exclusives on right now, and the answer is clearly Wii U. Xbone won't get most of it's awesome exclusive content until 1-2 years from now. At least IMO, since Titanfall and KI really weren't up my alley (though I did like Ryse and Crimson Dragon, they weren't must haves). Wii U has tons of exclusive stuff already, with MK8 being my current addiction. I can hardly wait for Xenoblade Chronicles X, Bayo 2, Smash, Splatoon, etc. Nintendo really is doing everything right on the 1st party software side despite the horrid marketing and name of the system. Such a shame it's selling like garbage.

PC is not a "console" but it's the best gmaing platform, and a hell of a complementary one for a PS4, IMHO.

The next best thing, assuming you have an interest in Nintendo first party titles ( I don't. I was done with cutesey platformers at age 12.) would be the WiiU.

Actually I'd pick a Vita before a WiiU for on the go gaming.

Came in expecting unanimous Wii U suggestion, leaving (slightly) disappointed.

I have a PC / Wii U combo and absolutely love it. If it's one or the other right now, I'd go with a Wii U. If it's longer-term, and the Xbox exclusives really do appeal more to you, then go with that.

Good luck! :-)

not really sure your actually making the point you think you are making. No one has discounted him wanting an XBONE. Likewise conversely, he obviously mentioned the Wii U because there are games on that system he wants also.

You also "poo poo" Nintendo by mentioning QoL stuff and whatnot.. but we already know a decent chunk of their 2015 output, not to mention already have a year leg up on both consoles from their early launch. While not overflowing with exclusives, that year headstart already gave them at least a good amount of them.

Bottom line is that for the OP, XBONE and Wii U would both likely serve the same purpose.. console with exclusives he wants to play. So the question is do you buy the XBONE for $100 more right now with fewer games and the promise of more games in the future (and probably a brighter future), or do you spend $100 less right now on a Wii U with more games, a bright near future, and still the opportunity down the road to spend less on an XBONE when it HAS more exclusive games at that moment for it.

Not really a right or wrong answer IMHO.. Biggest question is if he sees himself with all three down the road at some point.. If he does, Wii U now for $299 and XBONE later for say $299 would be a better value than like XBONE now for $399 and Wii U later for like $249.

OR of course there is always the $200 Wii U from Nintendo. Is going to be EXTREMELY tough to prop a current XBONE price and lineup against that IMHO.

Sounds like you want a XB1. If you want quirky just down right fun games the XB1 seems like the machine for you. Sunset Overdrive is over the top fun on steroids. Forza horizon is a huge vibrant open world racer with man hours if fun. Quantum break is coming with third person suspenseful action with the addition of time powas. Pvz is amazing. Ori and the blind forest looks beautiful and charming. Games like crackdown re think how we look at real time physics calculations through the infinite power of the cloud. If you have to have competitive fps then you have titanfall halo 1-4, halo 5 coming. Gears is a high octane tps coming from the fresh and talented Black Tusk Studio who are know for their 10 second clip of the rumored and cancelled game shangheist. Kinect can now see 6 people in the room and that kind of precision is required to play games like Disney fantasia to their full potential. I saved the best for last. The Kinect voice control. Now you can talk to your Xbox and 80% of the time I works every time.

If you get the Wii u, you are getting the same tired 3rd party games available on your PS4 and if you talk to your Wii u there it will never respond. Seems lonely.

Xb1 is the clear choice.

No, my whole point is not about the games we know about but the ones we don't. Which company is more likely to devote resources on their console to create the next E3 game surprise? Odds are that Nintendo is working on a QoL gadget like the Vitality Sensor while Microsoft is developing/acquiring games. As for which games are best, the OP already stated that it was a toss up, which totally negates 90% of the comments here which just offer some variety of "...but you'll like the Wii U's games better".

You are probably not going to want to pay both XBL and PS+ fees, and the library between X1 and PS4 are near identical.

Wii-U is the logical choice.

What makes you think that? There's no reason to believe the QOL product will have any influence on the Wii U. It's so far out that, if anything, it would impact the next nintendo console, not this one.

Unless you really like MS/Sony first party there's not a compelling reason to have both. Paying for two console's subscriptions services is probably not the best either.

Wii U isn't the best primary console for most, but it's a great secondary console for many.

Wii U is my vote too. Mario Kart, Monster Hunter, Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, Windwaker that are already out. Plus Bayo 2, Smash, Xenoblade X, Splatoon, Zelda Wii U coming out soon. It's a very good console.

Welp, I have a PS4+WiiU combo too OP. Looks like thats the way of things this gen! Do it!

Sunset Overdrive is over the top fun on steroids.

Whut? It's not out or reviewed yet!

If you get the Wii u, you are getting the same tired 3rd party games available on your PS4 and if you talk to your Wii u there it will never respond. Seems lonely.

Surely you mean XB1 not WiiU here?! I actually cant think of a single shared 3rd party game between WiiU and PS4, with the exception of Assassin's Creed 4, while there is quite a large shared library between XB1 and PS4.

Also, dude, the whole post sounds kinda like an advert on an infomercial channel.
