Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

I remember my friend claiming that Mewtwo was in Melee and I thought he was bullshitting me, so he invited me to his house to prove it.

Needless to say, my mind was blown.

I miss those days. The internet has forever ruined them. It'll never be the same.

Sometimes we get close with games like dark souls or Fez, but still, never anything like the mega man x hadouken was for me (I owned and beat the game for over a year and didn't know about it until a friend showed me.)

I remember years ago reading about how Disney got super upset about a dying kid getting a poster or something from a movie theater. Looks like that story was made up as I can't find it on the Internet anymore.

So it's very possible that Nintendo doesn't take everything back too I suppose. There's hope left for a unique Smash Bros. setup.

Worked at gamestop for 9 years, got tons of nintendo advertising merch (we were told to throw them away, I kept most of the cool ones.) I even got to keep a GBA system and display. The only things nintendo took back were the DS Download station games (and pokemon distributions) and the systems (save for the GBA they let me have). The system displays we were told to dispose of (I didn't work there when they finally took down the wii one, but I can find out if nintendo kept the stand/TV). My buddy still has the gamecube display (sans original gamecube). The controllers, as you can imagine, (one normal, one bongo) were damaged beyond repair.

I have every Zelda standee from wind waker through skyward sword. Tons of zelda posters, too. Mario galaxy standee as well.

Did anyone else get into a franchise they never dabbled in just because of Smash?
Smash 64 introduced me to Kirby and Metroid, and I love them.
I've yet to play neither Star Fox nor Earthbound nor F-Zero, but if I ever do it will be because of Smash (Fire Emblem too).

I did play my first Zelda decades post-Smash, but I was vaguely familiar with the series.

Mewtwo was so freaking badass. It was hard to do well with him, but everything from the way he moonwalked for dodging to levitating beam sabers like a boss was just COOL.

While I'm going down GameCube memory lane... Leading up to GCN, I was bummed thinking I'd need an HDTV or my screen would look like it did in this visual mockup at IGN, where they said if you didn't have component cables there'd be black bars running across your screen. But then I went to Target and saw a demo kiosk with Rogue Leader looking gorgeous on an SDTV. Faith was restored.

I was bored and started watching more live reactions for the Monday reveal. Too much "loo-chee-nuh" and not knowing who the hell Robin is. I got into Fire Emblem because of Melee; hopefully this iteration gets more people into the series.

Definitely Fire Emblem as well. Ness in 64 got my interested in Mother, and watching my cousin play Earthbound really got me interested in the series, though I wasn't ever actually able to play it until Earthbound came out on VC last year finally.

Also, my most memorable moment regarding the early days of Melee: I watched the original trailer for the game and had no idea who the hell Ice Climbers were. My cousins didn't even know either (and they knew of Ness). At first I thought they were related to Bomberman or something.

Also, when your favorite character is not announced. Please don't cry over the split milk.

To be honest, the only characters that were unknown to me in any of the smash games have been the Fire Emblem and Earthbound/Mother characters :o The weird thing is, I don't even know how I know some of them. Like ice-climbers: never played their game or remember even reading about them but I knew who they were and expected them to be playable together (though I didn't know their names) I guess I must've seen a screenshot of their game when I was younger or something :o

D'awww
Is that Kirby in the background?
Smash needs to be more visceral, immersive, filmic, and open world.
I have no milk to cry over ;-;

Yeah, that's definitely not true. Movie theaters just throw away posters when they're done with them. Doing so can be time consuming and laborious because they always come in cardboard tubes of at least two. A few months go by and you have hundreds of tubes to transport to a dumpster. You WISH you had sick kids to give them to.

Smash is pretty much why I got into gaming as much as I have. Before it I played whatever came my way via my parents, a handful of TV ads, and the box arts at Blockbuster when renting. Along with games from cartoons I liked. A lot of my early games from NES/SNES and even N64 reflect that.

I bought Smash because of a TRU kiosk that put Mario and Pikachu together. As an 11 yr old boy wanting to be cool, Pikachu was dumb and stupid. So I wanted to beat him up with Mario. I only knew Mario, Luigi, DK, Pikachu, Jiggly and Yoshi. The next game that came out in the rest of the characters series was my first game to try. I did the same in Melee too, and I was happy when I finally got the Game & Watch from Club Nintendo.

The only game I haven't played is Earthbound/Mother...never looked interesting enough for me
please bring back Lucas, Sakurai!

Smash must've done a ton of good for EarthBound. I didn't play the game until years later, but back in Melee I was just so happy hopping around Onett, listening to the music, getting run over by cars, and pausing the game high up in the sky so I could pan the camera and see all of the different streets and landmarks. So cool. Led me to starmen.net to find out more, at which point I learned about the series' fan base. Seeing their hype fueled my own.

Also, while we're all sharing stories from our childhood:

I was eight when Smash Bros came out on the 64. The only characters I recognized were Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, DK, Pikachu and Jigglypuff. Playing with friends always involved asking who was who and where they were from. Very few of my friends had any clue where most were from besides Link and Fox.

Nobody I knew had heard of Samus, Ness, Kirby, or Captain Falcon. We reverse engineered our experience with games FROM Smash Bros. When we passed a game that showcased a character we recognized at the video store we would rent it and figure out who they were. By the end of my experience with Smash 64, I still didn't know who Ness was.

Melee caught me and a lot of my friends by surprise. Just, all of a sudden, there was a new Smash Bros on shelves and we went nuts. The roster felt enormous in comparison and the fact that not every character had hidden tiles gave everything an "anything could happen" feel to it. A lot of kids unlocked everyone but Mewtwo over the course of playing and when people claimed Mewtwo was in the game it was not often believed.

Then enter Mr. Game and Watch and we hadn't a clue. So the same thing happened: we took the games we heard of from Smash Bros and looked for their original games to play. I picked up Game and Watch Gallery 4 and another friend got an emulator for Ice Climber.

Smash was like buying a compilation album of pop songs and then finding the CDs for the artists who were sampled.

I'm hoping people will fall in love with Robin and Lucina in the 3DS version and then mosey over to the eShop to pick up Awakening. That game is godly.

So my brother redeemed his Club Nintendo points and got Game and Wario. As someone who has never played a WarioWare game, I did not know what to expect.

Now I want every Diamond City character playable. Diamond City cast > most Mario characters easily.

I just discovered all of the CLASHtournment 1v1 videos from E3 thanks to that Magnus AT post.

I did not know this footage existed, Bowser looks really good, and 1v1 looks funner than Brawl's.

You should play the rest of the WarioWare games, or at least the first one and Touched and Twisted, if you want to see that cast. You don't really see all of the personality of those characters in Game and Wario (and imo that game is kinda bad anyways).

I was banking on Jimmy T sometime last year. Now I'm over here begging for them just to show Wario.

What the fuck! WarioWare is sooooooo good.

I really wanted a non-Wario WarioWare character back in the Brawl days, and while I didn't get my wish, I ended up pretty damn satisfied with how the game treated the series between the music and the stage. I've pretty much given up hope on any of those characters, though.

Also WarioWare is an awesome series and Mega Party Games is GOAT multiplayer.

Ok, let's see where we can go with this to get back on track. Um.
I've always been a fan of those fighting games that do the whole 2.5D thing with their backgrounds (MvC). Do you think Smash should ever go in this direction? Like they'll keep the platforms for the stages stages of course.

Edit: I mean the style.

Smash is pretty much 2.5D I know. It just seems like not much is going on in the back.

I think Ness and Samus were the only characters I didn't know in the original. From Melee on there have been quite a few I didn't know about before: Game and Watch, Marth, Roy, Ice Climbers, Ike, Lucas, Pit. Of course, I had become a forum dweller by that time and heard characters mentioned and read wikipedia pages and such, but had no personal experience with their games.

So was I the only one who thought that Marth and Roy were from the same game (same series I know) and hated each other? I mean Red vs. Blue kingdom pretty much. Of course Awakening DLC made this situation possible I guess.

I'm more of a Wario Land person, but I love Warioware too. I couldn't ask for a better character than Wario in Brawl. I'm satisfied with what we got for a Warioware character.

And yeah, everyone should play Warioware. (and Rhythm Heaven!)

Could someone be so kind as to direct me to the link to suggest thread titles for the next OT as well as the link that shows ideas already suggested? It was posted yesterday but that's like 2,000 posts ago now.

I wonder if we'll get Toon Zelda as a clone.

Let me preface the following by saying I'm not rooting for her or anything. I just think that from where we stand in the dark, she's one of the characters who has a number of things going for her:

  • Leftover Brawl data says Toon Zelda was planned for that game
  • The Phantom Guardian, from Spirit Tracks, was added to adult Zelda
  • Toon Zelda would complement Toon Link and better rep the "toon" series
  • "Toon" series still topical, with recent release of The Wind Waker HD
  • Would be simple clone of Zelda, in vein of Lucina or, well, Toon Link
  • She'd also be another female character on the roster, for what it's worth
  • She could be a hidden unlockable like Toon Link was in Brawl
What say you, Smash Brethren?

The only Smash characters I've ever been unfamiliar with at the time of their release are Marth and Roy. I had no idea who they were and only a vague idea of what Fire Emblem was (I was like 12, and Fire Emblem was very much still a Japan-only series).

Having played (and loved) EarthBound upon its original release, I knew who Ness was back during the Smash 64 days and was thrilled to have him in the game. To this day I still get a rush from seeing Ness in new Smash games - I love EarthBound to death and I love playing Ness for that reason even if I'm not that good with him.

I'd rather have most of the Diamond City cast over Wario himself, to be honest. Mona, Ashley, Jimmy T., and 9-Volt are all awesome and I'd love to see them in Smash.
