Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

Now I'm super curious about the changes the Smash franchise will undergo the first time Sakurai isn't at the helm. FutureGAF is gonna have a hell of a time with that, I'm sure

I definitely don't think Sakurai is surprised by any reactions. Like I said, the Palutena "leak" and ensuing week of Kid Icarus updates seemed just a tad too playful to be coincidence. Sakurai trolls, and he knows his fans better than they know themselves.

Maybe, juuuuust maybe, the supposed-leak was fake all along? Excluding the original list, of course, which could have been a legit leak while the rest was made up because Sal Romano wanted to look important and in-the-know.

No, that would be too crazy. Someone on the internet making things up? That never happens.

The sneaky spirit, though.

Can't it be possible that people at Monolith Soft are just really excited for Smash Bros. just like the rest of us? I retweet Smash Bros. announcements all the time, doesn't mean I'm going to fucking be in the game.

Some of you guys really think too hard on this kind of stuff.

I think Sakurai has a schedule and sticks to it. When developing a game this big you don't have time to worry about internet rumors or leaks. I really do not think he cares, and this is his 4th and 5th Smash game... so this is nothing he hasn't seen before.

He has always thrown curveballs at fans, he's just good at it. He doesn't need to go to the Monolith guy and tell him tweet to deliberately mislead fans. Lol, like, wut?

Yep, I'm aware of those possibilities. That first one you suggested feels just as likely to me as the one I suggested. Them knowing Shulk's in the game might be why they retweet whenever Smash news is about to break.

Actually, on that last note, how consistent has Monolith been on that front? Do they retweet every Smash-related announcement?

I can't recall if they did for the smash direct, but other than that, they have. Though to be fair, Xenoblade Chronicles X was shown at each of those nintendo directs too.

Based on his physical appearance, I'm sure Sakurai will be able to work on Smash forever (among other cool projects, obviously)

and Sakurai stated that Nintendo was prepared to do Smash without him. They might've ported Melee to Wii with Online features. So maybe it wouldn't be as bad as PS All-Stars :p

No way, man. The second leak got Pokemon from X/Y right! No one could have possibly gotten that right! And Palutena? Given that she's one of the major characters in Sakurai's last game, no one could have guessed that. No one could just possibly read Sakurai like that. The man's a goddamn enigma! So what if the leaker got the next thing completely and utterly fucking wrong? Pokemon! X! Y!

NAILED IT

Me too! I remember getting pumped about it with you over in the OT like, a year ago, hahah. I don't play it anymore but I loved it.

I remember you as well! Don't worry, we'll make a PSAS Legacy clan for Smash! Haha TheMink was my 2 vs 2 partner, maybe I can get our partnership to return

Lol at the hate bandwagon

I mean, in some ways, PSASBR was what people were asking of Smash and Sakurai never really conceded. It was intended to be a head nod toward competitive fighting, they brought in Clockw0rk as a salaried employee to work on the game, they name-checked Seth Killian (even though I doubt he actually did anything in developing it, but they tried), they tried to make it combo-friendly and focus more on the journey of climbing up the ranks than anything you really do alone or locally.

With Sakurai gone, I can see a Smash team going that same direction.

Difference is, Sakurai is in development with close ties to Nintendo etc. and X & Y have been in development for years. We may not have known about it, but he certainly did. It's illogical to assume that just because we didn't know, Sakurai didn't and so it would be illogical for him to include it. If anything, it's more reason to as it shows the game is up to date.

Also, for Gen 3 & 5, there's a reason...there were generations released between it and the next Smash

Gen 1: Feb 1996
Super Smash Bros: January 1999
Gen 2: November 1999
Super Smash Bros. Melee: November 2001
Gen 3: November 2002
Gen 4: September 2006
Super Smash Bros. Brawl: January 2008
Gen 5: September 2010
Gen 6: September 2012
Super Smash Bros for 3DS: September 2013

There was no logical place for Gen 3 and 5 to be represented. If there was a Smash game between them and their next gen, then they would have been, but not now.

Do note that Sakurai has said that he asks The Pokémon Company for what Pokémon to use, and they give it to him. Logic dictates that they knew the game was coming out after X & Y and so gave him Greninja, as well as Mega Lucario and Mega Charizard X, regardless of the fact that it's "too close" to launch.

Incidentally, if it wasn't for Sonic delaying Brawl, it'd have been the same period of release between DP and Brawl, meaning Lucario, many PokéBall Pokémon, the Spear Pillar etc. were all in similar positions to Greninja, Xerneas, Chespin etc., Prism Tower and Kalos Pokémon League,

Obviously Sakurai knows stuff before we do. Sakurai could have easily included any Pokemon from any gen. My argument is that he has shown that he doesn't arbitrarily put in Pokemon from each gen just because, and that before April a Pokemon XY character wasn't necessarily a lock. If he put in a Gen III character you could argue that its to hype up the new remakes, or a Gen V character to argue that it is celebrating the DS. You never know, maybe we have more Pokemon coming. Not Mega Swampert though because his size can only be described as Ridley-esque.

If we make a PSAS Legacy clan for Smash then we have to be better than everyone else so we don't get made fun of.

I can tell you know exactly what you're talking about because you use a condescending sarcastic tone and blatantly ignore several pages worth of posts about how hard it'd be for the leaker to know everything else and still be wrong.

It would be fine.

Everyone who directs that thing you like is either going to stop directing, or will be forced to stop directing. Either for business reasons, or nature. So you ya know, prepare yourself, as Ike likes to say.

It's past my bedtime and you're telling horror stories, stop it you big meanie

I too was a part of that OT. I had hyped that game quite well (and admitedly, I still play it on my Vita from time to time.) I'm a hypocrite because while the game could have been better, I still enjoy it somewhat.

I'm still bitter we didn't get Abe as DLC.

They even put out balance fixes every now and then which is something that'll never happen with Smash.

Your not anybody important on a large level though and not in a company thats known for retweeting things when something relevant involves them and especially when someone knows they influence a large group of people's thoughts even when its their own personal opinion so should be careful of what they tweet and retweet.

I don't understand how they put so much work into PSASBR and failed to realise there's no kinetic joy in vanquishing an opponent whatsoever

Never say never with the wii u and 3ds! Sure it's still not that high but atlease it's actually possible now to avoid another metaknight.

No, but he always puts in characters that are relevant to the time, and Greninja is.

I'd say Sakurai had already decided on Greninja by the time he sat in at the Pokemon X/Y E3 roundtable and just stayed quiet in the audience the entire time.
Likewise, a guy from IGN interviewed Sakurai that E3 and the guy asked about Pac-man, at which point Sakurai turned the tables by asking him how he'd implement it. The IGN reporter said he'd go for the classic arcade look with the black eyes, and for his Final Smash he'd eat a power pellet and chomp after his enemies. And, well, that's what we got. I'm sure that was already designed by that point, but it's cool to see Sakurai dodge a question by asking a question himself and checking fan expectations.

It would be really impossible for the original leak (which was never actually posted confidently as a leak until after it was proven) to be true and the remainder to have been made up. I cannot imagine why someone would try to ride their train of popularity by making up fake facts that they do not have proof of. It would be awfully bizarre.

I don't understand people that cling to the Sal leak. Like, why? There is no proof that Chrom was ever considered in the roster, so why try and justify it that way? It was probably just some dude on the internet trying to get a quick spurt of popularity and get some people to ride his hype train, which is fine. Just... toss it out like every other leak that was proven wrong.

If you can move past it and accept that it's fake, it'll be even more exciting if a Rhythm Heaven character is actually announced, whether it's the Chorus Kids or not.

I think they let the criticism get to them. They tried so hard to make sure no one thought they were just a poor man's Smash Bros. that they lost perspective on the actual act of playing the game.

And people still called it a poor man's Smash Bros.

i don't understand so much about the game:
-how they never realized that half of smash's fun comes from platforming
-how they never managed to realize that the supers only kills were a terrible idea
-how they came up with almost every decision they did.
Playstation All-Stars, I hate so much about the things you choose to be.

Nobody is trying to "cling so hard to this leak because we need this man" Well a few people, but try not to write everyone like this, there is a level between all or nothing

Didn't help that they actually used smash brothers related tags on one of their youtube video for a few hours lol. I do hope they give it another shot in the future.

I will say that leaks aren't always the most accurate things ever, so it's important you never really repeat them with confidence or try and fill in missing blanks.

There's been a game I've seen a few topics on GAF about within the last few weeks that I've heard people talking about for two+ years but every time someone mentions it, the rumors change. If I had said what I knew two years ago and the game eventually comes out and is different from what I heard (or misheard or misremembered), there'd be a lot of "Well he was clearly making things up, anyway."

I was once told with confidence that three games in long-running series would show up at a conference. IGN even wrote a story with me as the source. Only two of those games showed up, the third was later revealed to have existed but been cancelled, and people still called me a liar. So I just don't leak anymore.
