EA announces Subscription Service for Xbox One ($5/month or $30/year, get game vault)

EA giving us the first couple hits for free before they start to cut that shit with baby powder and charge double for it yo....

But in other news sounds intriguing...

It's because technically it's a recurring membership and they need your CC on file to charge you automatically after the year is up. I know it seems weird, but that's how XBL subscription and Call of Duty's subscription worked too. :(
 
This is just the beginning. If it's successful, im sure Ubi and Activision will follow. Soon we will be "subscribing" a-la-carte to the publishers we like. These guys make most of their money on each game within the first few months. This is their way to combat the used market. Think of it this way, if EA makes most of the money within the first 3 months from retailers and then puts the game in the "vault" it seriously devalues the used game market as people who subscribe to this can play those games for less than the price of the used copy.

I agree.

Lots of people would shell out 30 bucks for a year to have access to every old Call of Duty game, or every old Assassins Creed game. Activision is a bit sparse in their catalog, I can't really think of anything else they've published in the last few years, but Ubisoft has a pretty large resume of various titles.
 
Maybe more people might start looking at live now and possibly away them from 2k. I know I wouldn't play live any other way

Also this keeps battlefield somewhat relevant since hard line is delayed
 
Well out of the 5 friends that I know are aware of this they and myself all got codes and bought a years worth... curious as to how well this is gonna do. I think it is priced perfectly.

This has a chance to be big.. Trading in BF4 and Madden disc tomorrow for around what I paid for the service.

The danger is the affect and pressure for early release success. Shit, I may just wait for everything to hit the vault...right? If it was just 3 months...

This could also alter the PSNow model if all of the companies follow suit. Not necessarily for the older generations stuff but for any of the new stuff. If they opt for a subscription model like this, why would they want to do PSNow?

This may all be true, but at least what they're offering here is far more consumer-friendly and reasonably-priced than many of the possible alternatives.

Two of the most likely possibilities IMO:

1) MS is either paying to keep this exclusive or has agreed to subsidise (partly) the games that are put on the service for EA (or both), and sony did not agree to it.

2) Sony might think it is a competing service to PS+/PSNow and are refusing to let EA do it until PSNow gets on its feet.

EDIT: As seen above - it is a co-op between MS and EA for the app. Might be timed or fully exclusive.
 
From the get go $30 is a fantastic value for me as I don't have FIFA or Madden currently. Hell, $30 a year to have the two best sports game to keep my roommates entertained is a pretty solid deal.
 
Man... I really wanted to try that out... Could it be possible that they would send a code if I was in the Xbox Preview thing? How can I get in? Only select people?

Interesting theory; it's 100% likely EA initiated this after all. Does make me wonder if MS has a PSNow-like service planned at all.

Sites were reporting that publishers like ea, activision, ubisoft and so on were pushing for the no used games drm thing Microsoft(possibly Sony) were going for prior to launch. Since that fell through this is likely their anti used games alternative. IMO it's a pretty good solution and I can see the other publishers joining if the test goes well.

No only older titles are added to the subscription service. New titles can be bought for regular price minus the 10% discount if you have a subscription. It's unclear how long it will take for new releases to be added to the subscription side. I would imagine once sales slow that's when they'll pop up to try and stop used game sales.
 
I'm curious how this works for multiple XB1 owners? Can any profile on the 'home' xb1 get access to the games or does the main account have to stay signed in?
 
Gamestop is going to have a hard time justifying some of their used game prices if there's an entire library available out there for the price of a sub.
Hell, I would drop $5 easily for a title I want to play and get a full month to check it out and finish it.

I've rented and held on to a single movie from redbox that wound up costing me more.

Like brand new releases? You aren't getting current titles anywhere close to their release date. That's where the 10% discount pricing comes into play. No one would ever purchase an EA game again otherwise.
 
Cross posting: So I just got another message to enroll in the preview program instead of a code for EA access, whats the deal with that?

This would be compelling if I bought 4-5 EA games a year. Unfortunately, I don't buy any sports games and other than a mainline BF entry, I generally keep away.

I'd imagine Gamestop is in a pretty weird position. On one hand they are specifically mentioned as having the subscription cards (once available) but on the other hand this will probably make them do a pretty steep slash of trade-in values for EA games in this program.
