Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

Namco Bandai releases many games only on PS3/4, did you ever complain they are anti-consumer?

Yakuza is exclusive on PS3/4, did you ever complain SEGA is anti-consumer?

You, of course, realize they do thag because it makes financial sense for them. Sony doesn't pay for them, heck we haven't even gotten Yakuza 5 in the west. They sell mostly in Japan where the 360 is dead. Not moneyhatting

I like exclusive content on my shiny new XB1.

Yet I don't really want Nintendo, Sony or MS buying such big games from other publishers for trillions. It seems like such a waste of resources when they could be starting more in-house game studios.

Dude stop it, your trying too hard. No man Sky is a timed exclusive and Sony is helping fund it. Not remotely the same thing.

So we know FOR SURE that MS isn't "helping fund" Rise of the Tomb Raider? Any answer would most likely be speculation at this point until GAF detectives do what they do. Could be hats of monies... Or a new partnership. No one here knows I imagine.

i've got more expectations for this Tomb Raider than Uncharted 4, i loved the first 2 Uncharted, but the third wasn't good, and Tomb Raider 2013 was definitely better, and now being this TR the second episode of a reboot they have more room to tell somithing fresh and interesting, rather than the 5th iteration of Uncharted

FROM is a developer
SE is a publisher
You think SE don't have enough money or resource to make TR?

With all the comments about TR underperforming etc, I am not so sure. With this move they will be in a secure position with the sequel (that will probably also cost a ton), so it makes sense for them. Also, as far as I remember, From just released two Dark Souls-games that was multiplattform (and PC!). There surely would have been a way to do it with Bloodborne as well, but partnering with Sony was probably the safer move for them.

They could/should have used this money fund a new game instead of making a game exclusive. There’s no real upside for consumers here.

Goddamn it. I know this is supposed to make me want an Xbox One because I loved the 1st Tomb Raider, but all it does is make me pissed at MSFT for taking another great 3rd party game away from the platform I'm invested in. Sony aren't a bunch of saints or anything, but they don't pull this 3rd party AAA exclusive shit nearly as much as MSFT.

Great move for Microsoft, suck for Sony fan. This is business so I don't see anything wrong with that, you do whatever you can to gain advantages.

I don't understand why bunch of people are suddenly worried about SE's financial position now ? I'm pretty sure the paycheck from Microsoft is fat enough so this game don't cause loss like first one.

This actually sets a dangerous precedent for MS now. TR is a fairly sizable franchise, one that I thought would be too big to moneyhat. What's to stop MS from shelling out for bigger franchises like Fallout, Final Fantasy, etc? Only franchises that seem safe for now are mega blockbusters like Call of Duty and GTA.

That's exactly what I was thinking regarding the next Mass Effect, which was shown in Microsoft's E3 presentation with Tomb Raider. And TR reboot sold more on the competing platforms, unlike Mass Effect trilogy. Hopefully this isn't a sign of things to come.

Both Xbone and Wii U are dead as fuck compared to PS4.

lol. Youre basing this off of what? The fact that both consoles literally have the same amount of games currently out? Or sales numbers for consoles that are sitting there being used for netflix because of the game draught

THey probably made enough money off the deal to keep working on other games. I just love so much how people are ok with any other company except microsoft having exclusives. ATT made the iphone exclusive when it first came out, smart business decision. How dare they try and drum up sales for there console.

This is crap...

I have both systems, just so I can play exclusives, but there is no way I am buying this.

You have exclusives that are made in house.

You have exclusives, like the recent Sunset Overdrive, where the developer gets to keep control of their product, so staying on one system makes sense.

You have exclusives, like Bayonetta 2, where one of the big companies helps fund the game which would have never been made otherwise.

With all of these I have no problem buying the game and is the reason I own all the major systems.

Then you have crap like this where one company pays to keep the game off other systems. This is complete anti-consumer shit. This is not helping the gamer. This is not creating exciting content for your fans. This is not making me want to support your company by hiring the most talented artist in the industry and giving them a chance to wow me. This is 100% complete mafia bullshit of taking out all competition and leaving me one single choice.

fuck you I am not supporting this...
I feel you.

maybe the bigwigs in SE got disappointed about the sales of TR , either way I think they weren't too confident of the future sales of this game and wanted the guaranteed cash instead

I don't understand companies. TR is not a system seller. It sold 6 million on all platforms. Now you limit it to one? It's going to sell even less. They just destroyed what could of been a great franchise.

Well was yakuza ever on different platforms? No it was always on playstation. Tomb Raider was on playstation and now it's not. If tomb raider started on xbox I would have been fine with it but starting a seires on muilt platform and now going exclusive, now that's where it I draw the line.

yakuza was on wii u for a while, it did pretty bad iirc

Amazing thread!

So glad I own both consoles. You know these things gonna happen eventually. Good times being able to play Bloodborne and Rise of the Tomb Raider.

That is really short-sighted of Squeenix, with xbone being a non-entity in most of Europe. I guess they don't have much faith in the selling potential of this thing if they'd rather have Microsoft's moneyhats. I wonder how do you have to pay to get a AAA franchise of this sort exclusive, even for a time, on a struggling console.
My thoughts exactly.

Tomb Raider (2013) Sales by platform

PS3 - 2.2 million
X360 - 1.71 million
PS4 - 0.46 million
PC - 0.27 million
XOne - 0.17 million

source: ********

It's good that they're targeting their largest fanbase. Should do wonders for their sales. I'm just afraid that if they'll abandon the franchise if they do poorly with this game.

********. Mate...

This announcement came way out of left field and as a PS4 owner and fan of the TR reboot I'm mildly annoyed.
I'm still thinking it'll be timed exclusive but that doesn't make it much better in my eyes.

The thing that boggles my mind is Square's response to the sales of the first game only to make the sequel exclusive to one system.

So we know FOR SURE that MS isn't "helping fund" Rise of the Tomb Raider? Any answer would most likely be speculation at this point until GAF detectives do what they do. Could be hats of monies... Or a new partnership. No one here knows I imagine.

Because Square Enix isn't a small start up and neither was EA when it came to Titanfall.

This is actually good news for Naughty Dog. No sales split at all. Any PS4 owner who wants that style of game is going to most definitely buy UC4 now. They have no other choice.

I think people are missing the point. People are upset because it was a multiplatform game that is now exclusive. They can't play a game in a series they're already invested in.

People weren't this upset at something like Sunset Overdrive or Titanfall, because they're new IP's and they're not being removed from their console's library.

It's going to be timed exclusive anyway. No way in hell will it stay forever on Xbone. This series is just too big as a multiplatform game to stay exclusive to one platform. I give it a year.

Well that's dissapointing oh well I guess I will pick up the "Definitive Edition" in 2016 on PS4.

I am pretty sure if Sony took the next Bioshock sequel exclusive to the PS4, I would not defend Sony at all (unless it was the only way the game would exist otherwise [like Bayonetta 2]).

I hope they don't do anything similar.

This move has just ensured MS and the Xbox One get a lot of hate this generation just when it looked like the Bone was getting some positive steam.

Decent move for Microsoft terrible move for Square Enix unless Microsoft fully paid for the development for the title.

I'm personally more concerned on the reception to this on the part of CD/SE.

If they don't manage the negavity behind this reveal well, and they don't have something that will truly blow our socks off, this will just impact the sales of the game even more.
