Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

I don't own an Xbox One..
I don't plan on buying One this Gen.
But,
I might pick myself up a copy of this Rise of Tomb Raider, for shits and giggles.
I'll place it in front of the Playstation 4 and whisper to it.
"Drakes asking me if you want to touch it".

I like you. You're funny.

Interesting move by MS, but RotTR is the last game I expected them to lock down, (even if it is timed). Still, enjoyed the last game so I have no qualms about picking this one up.

Seriously, imagine if it was a different SE game they made timed like KH3 or FFXV. I don't think GAF would still be standing right now.

This is simple.

Square wants to release for the holiday.

Sony is releasing Uncharted 4 for Holiday 2015.

Square doesn't want to compete with Uncharted for the same market share they will lose.

Square gets money to keep off PS4, for Holiday 2015, then release ps4 version in March after Uncharted mania dies down.

Makes sense. Free money from MS for timed exclusive, which keeps them from competing against uncharted on the ps4, and excuseable time for pent up demand to finally release it.
Well this could backfire big time.

Lots of GAF hated the last TR game, so may not be a big loss to most, but that has nothing to do with whether or not the tactics are appropriate/acceptable.

I think the backlash is pretty simple to understand. For those who fail to get the distinction:

Players are generally more ok with a new IP that has been funded and supported by one platform being exclusive.

Players are generally not ok with existing IP that has been multiplatform for years suddenly becoming exclusive to one platform while also accompanied by PR statements explaining it is somehow still a win to those who don't own or plan to own said platform.

Something you wouldn't see on the Xbox store:

Where's the glorious angel of darkness?

Geoff, Geoff, Geoff. What question did you ask? I repeat, here's the question you need:

Interviewers: Here is the exact question I want you to ask:

"In Holiday 2016, will Rise of the Tomb Raider still be exclusive on Xbox One?"

I'm actually expecting it to be fully-exclusive, but the mealy-mouthedness around it is bothering me.

Edit: Ah, missed the formal "MS publishing" bit of things. That seems clearest.

I don't see the big deal about this announcement.

Tomb Raider is not a killer app anymore. This isn't going to significantly improve Xbox One sales. If I never play Tomb Raider 2013, or the sequel, I will be fine. Neither are "must own" games.

Square not publishing...
Crystal Dynamics is a full subsidiary of Square Enix, the multiplatform publisher.

I'm sure Geoff knows how to asks questions, based on hours of interviews he conducted.

Genuinely interested to see where it was announced for PS4? Other than Amazon listings for 360, PS3 and PS4 I couldn't find anything. Should I look harder or can you help?

My bad guys. I saw that the game was announced for next- gens consoles on some websites and I thought it was a confirmation.

Pretty sketchy that they are dancing around the issue and simply saying "for holiday 2015". I bet it's a timed exclusive... I don't believe that it's really fully exclusive. Why wouldn't they just flat out say it's an actual exclusive, it would be beneficial for them, instead we get a non committal "for holiday 2015".

In any case if it ends up being a full exclusive, it's one of those games I'll pick up on the cheap alongside an Xbox one at the end of the generation.

So...timed exclusive after all?
Regardless of what they say its a timed exclusive, it just doesn't make any sense otherwise.

SE pulled this to dodge Uncharted 4 but it will comeback to bite them in the ass. Crystal Dynamics just isn't in the same league as ND, their last game had a 2 years advantage over the last Uncharted and was still a lesser game. If this turn into a Uncharted 4 vrs Tomb Raid they are doomed. Tomb Raider had to arrive before Uncharted 4 on PS4 to sell well and not 6 months/ 1 year later.

Hmm, pretty confusing. From that Xbox Wire link, seems Xbox is publishing it, so in that case, makes sense its exclusive (And hopefully means SE is putting more resources in KH3/FFXV...which SHOULD speed development).

But from that quote "Exclusive on Xbox for Holiday 2015", that makes it seem like a timed exclusive.

It seems that MS is publishing it though, so in that case, the exclusivity makes sense.

it will eventually come out on pc, hence the holiday 2015 xbox statement.

How bizzarre. I mean, props to MS for getting this, but still, they must've paid massive amounts of money compared to what they'd lose from skipping the PS4 version.

It does seem a shame, and oddly counter-productive for Square Enix since I thought they were trying to grow the brand of this again since the reboot turned out to be such a sleeper hit. Seems like a case of short-term gain rather than long term growth.

Ah well.

Hmm definitely looking like a Timed.

PC only though if MSFT is publishing. I mean this thread is going 1000 miles an hour, and people are overlooking that huge bit of news.

Again, MSFT is publishing, not SE. Say that 10x over and this thread will calm down.

Then everyone should be asking is what the publishing deal entails? Is the "new Lara Croft" game line now under MSFT publishing wing or just this game? Are they going to move it to PC? Was SE considering NOT funding this title for some reason?

Microsoft Publishing almost ensures they are funding at least a little of the development.

I'm willing to bet we see a PC version the following summer DR style.

Sony fanboys are so salty right now, this would be a whole different thread if it was a PS4 exclusive instead (Don't get me wrong, MS fanboys would just be the salty ones instead if that was the case) "That's okay, we have Uncharted 4" would be "YESOMGLOL WE HAZ UC4 AND RotTR!"

Fanboyz, looo0ooool!

I'm all for securing exclusives. But as others have said, there is a difference between securing exclusives by helping publish the game, backing a new franchise, or completely publishing a title for your own system. But money-hatting a franchise that was cross platform that is a sequel to a new successful reboot, is just BS. Paying money to keep a franchise off other platforms (cutting off an established fan base), is...wrong.

I don't believe in judging others for how they spend their money. If you think this is worth supporting, then all to you on that. But I own an X1, and I really believe these kind of practices are bad and can't justify paying for it.

This sums it up:

You should care more about, you know, playing the games.
People nowadays are more into the companies and less about games.

Where are the gamers that play games?

I am thinking this way too. MS has no issues announcing PC and Xbox together. I think the wording is saying a PC port will happen later. Still though, not on Playstation when the last game sold the most on those platforms is so odd.

It's probably a policy thing. Game needed funding, they went to Sony, Sony said no, Microsoft said yes?

FF/KH >>>>>> Tomb Raider

This is true, they're the number one stunners. I could easily argue that Tomb Raider is probably their number one Enix franchise though. A case could be made for Deus Ex.

This should really be in the OP of the thread. Microsoft is funding the game (similar to how many have said Sony is funding No Man's Sky) -- it's not a simple money grab.

Are you nuts? Nothing to calm or add sense will be added to any post. This thread will continue to go as the first page does. Arguments based on vague information.

I am also surprised, but going from the info that they said the reboot didn't do what they wanted and Microsoft seeming to fund it and probably release on PC as they have with other games, I can see why.

Sony fanboys? You realize PC players are upset too. Are they Sony fanboys too?

Yes, making the system more attractive to buyers is what they should be doing. Jeez, it's like people forget this is a business. This has been going on for decades. They are competing for money, they are not people's friends. If you want to play the game in Holiday 2015, you can buy and XBO and play it; if not, have fun with the hundreds of other games available. It's not anti-consumer. I feel like people treat this like a holy war or something when it's just entertainment. It amazes me how such an ostensibly hardcore gaming forum gets so tied up in what system a game is on after all these years, when you would think that when gaming is such an important hobby to most members, they would understand the industry and the competition and simply say, "Hey that system now has a lot of games I'm interested in, maybe I'll pick it up", instead of "MS/Sony/Nintendo is an anti-consumer devil who is restricting my enjoyment of my only console; I'll never buy their systems even if they have games I like because I made one choice and I'm sticking to it forever."

This post is WAY too sensible for this thread.

If Microsoft is publishing it, PS4 owners aren't getting this any time soon. Also it might mean Microsoft gets a bigger cut of the DLC and digital sales.

In which case, how much money did Microsoft cough up for this? Good god.

Well they just made me decide not to buy an Xbox console. Maybe I'll pick one up used, for cheap, with used games but that's about as far as I'll go if at all.

Dude, everyone can read your post history. You were never going to buy one.

Edit: MS published games are usually exclusive at least one year. Take that for what it's worth.

The Sony Brand is finally over. Maybe next decade!

It's over, period. Sony lost their last ace, and that's the end of their PS4 hopes and dreams.

It's not hyperbole, it's not fanboy drivel. It is LITERALLY it for PS4. Sony has nothing left, nothing they can reveal today would fix the hole now created. There is no reason left for any one, hardcore or casual, to substantively invest in a PS4. Except if they want to play Bloodborne. Which will also come to XboxOne at some point.

The age of Sony is done.

Bold statement (coming from a Xbox One only console owner )
