Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

What's your opinion on Dead rising 3 exclusivity? The game is published by Microsoft, but was an established franchise.

I don't like it, but I'm more open to it since the major company is funding it completely. I think in this case, you then have to shift focus over to Capcom, and question their decision to do this, and whether it was a good choice for their fanbase consumers.

Like I said, I approach these on an individual basis, and don't lump everything into ONE. At least to me, this was a very bad call on MS and CD part. I don't think it's a good deal (in the long term), to shut out the majority of the franchises fan base. But that's just me. I would have to say overall, I'm still not a fan of the big 3 pulling exclusives from a series that is already established (especially when the sequel is narrative driven/episodic). But I mean, if a studio can't afford to make the game (like Bayonetta 2), or, the company would rather allow one of the big 3 to completely fund it...

That to me feels different then one of them just throwing down cash at them to keep it off other platforms.

I find it odd that you keep talking about things liked being "owed" or a sense of "entitlement" when the topic under discussion is the "right" to spend $60 on a video game.

Oh no, we wanted to give a company our money in exchange for goods and services. What entitled assholes.

Exactly. Tomb Raider Fans want to give Square money for this game. Not give Microsoft and Square money for this game.

Clearly you can't be disappointed and want what's best for the industry at the same time.

Oh, good. The site is finally back up. That money used to secure this could've been put to better use towards first party development. If Titanfall didn't do much for them, I don't really see how this will fare any better. Anyway, I still haven't played the last one yet, so I'll pick it up when it eventually makes it to other platforms.

i read the updates to the OP in descending order with the Dear Tomb Raider community quote last. im kind of confused to be honest

A lot of people are, but this is what you should read into everything.

The wording they have used is exclusive to Xbox, Holiday 2015. At no point has anyone from MS or CD/SE said specifically that the game is never coming out on Playstation platforms. They have stated that it's exclusive for Xbox, Holiday 2015 and will not comment further.

CBOAT, Shinobi etc... both have said it's timed exclusive. The mods have contact with them and vet them, so they are to be trusted.

Basically, it's going to be released on Xbox first and other platforms later. Probably 6 months or so. MS just has a contract with CD / SE so they are locked down on what they can say about it. They are trying to make it sound like it's a full Xbox exclusive and never coming out for other platforms when that is not the case.

YOU STILL CAN!

Nothing is being taken from you! It's just coming a little later.

Tell you want, if the PS4 version of the game is cancelled outright, we can resume this conversation and I can guarantee you my opinion as far as the anger exhibited will have softened.

TR is my favorite franchise. Now I will not be buying this game because I will not be buying an Xbox. They will lose a fan that has been following the series since the PSX days.

Mission accomplished?

Seems there is some mixed messages, but it seems clear it's timed.

I am hoping it's permanent though. I think it'd kill the franchise's growth in its tracks and hopefully permanently put away the new shitty formulation of Tomb Raider once and for all. I am crossing the fuck out of my fingers right now. They literally could not have picked a more perfect game in my mind to snatch - a sequel to the horrific original bastardization of the franchise, one I loathed with all my heart for destroying a series that was still a true original in the industry and remained so since few if any games play like it even today. This 'me-too', check-list by design series couldn't be worse, and so since they decided to destroy a franchise I love, I want nothing more than to sit back and watch it deconstruct :D

Ice cold

I agree

Seems a pretty silly decision by SE considering the DE sold more on PS4 by quite a margine. I am not too fussed personally, I enjoyed the newest entry well enough, but not evidently enough to care one way or the other. Much more potentially interesting titles were shown at Gamescom from my perspective.

I could understand this movement on Titanfall, I mean EA gain MS marketing machine to publicity of a new IP, which can be hard to set a foothold for future entries.

But for an IP that was just rebooted on 3 different (5 if we include PS4 and Xbone), and took months to reach profitability releasing an exclusive entry for Xbone with it's middling sales?

Sounds like a pretty bad idea, this will entirely stop all the grow gained with the first entry...

Oh well, TR sucked balls, so no big loss for PC/PS owners...

Shouldn't anger be geared at SE? Why wouldn't MS take this if the opportunity presented itself, especially with their current situation and how much the PS4 has outsold the X1. Anything helps for them

well thats an interesting reason to want it exclusive lol

I seriously hope it is permanently exclusive. I wish I still drank so I could take a celebratory drink right now lol

Are you being sarcastic or for real because I can't tell lol.

100% real. I can show you my Tomb Raider review from the original thread. One of the worst games I've had the displeasure of playing last gen, and it was made worse by the fact they bastardized one of my favorite franchises and a true original series.

I am seriously so giddy right now that this has happened. SquareEnix is the king of stupid business decisions, but I genuinely hope this one cripples the franchise hard. I don't know if it will (and it probably won't), but I hope the franchise is at least hurt by it. I fucking cannot stand what they have done to the series. Skill-less, cinematic garbage designed to meet every absurd specification of modern game design. Pass Pass. PASS.

I am all for people having the games they enjoy and whatnot, but this is a unique exception because they REPLACED a good series that was original with an atrocious series that is a piece of shit in every way. So, since they had no problem doing that to a franchise I cherish, I have no problem wishing its demise :D

or it could be like titanfall and ms could pay them to lock down full exclusivity down the road. tr sold pretty shit on x360 so i doubt ms do but u never know

I am sure this has been answered, but what was the sales breakdown between the PS4/XBO for the Definitive Edition this past spring?

18 years as a fan but not buying a XBone for this.

This is exactly the wrong kind of third party exclusive, a multiplat series moneyhatted to be exclusive. It isn't a reward to Xbone owners, they would get it anyway, just a middle finger from Square to PC/PS gamers.

If it timed exclusive I'll be buying it used. Not supporting it.
I don't know about that. In a sense it's Microsoft being committed to their product that I spent $499 on. It's rewarding us by offering exclusives that add value to our purchase. Why did we buy an Xbox One over a PS4? For the exclusive games and features it has. This just adds on to the list of why it's "better" to buy an Xbox One over a PS4.

Then again, I'm being reasonable and not a cynic over common industry practices. I'm not treating this any differently than I treated No Man's Sky, Fez, DayZ, and Destiny's exclusive content.

I'm upset at Bungie, sure, but I'm not going to complain about it and try to tarnish their reputation, and make loose threats about how "I and no one else will buy your game!".

I sincerely feel some of you guys are being ridiculous right now.

I remember playing Tomb Raider on the Saturn I was damn salty when the second one was on the PlayStation only.
At least it seems this will be timed exclusive so at least PlayStation 4 owners and on owners will get a chance a few months down the line. I had to get a PlayStation.

Agreed. MS and Sony should invest in new IP, and securing exclusives by helping publish or give money to studios that see it as a good deal. What MS did with Sunset was a very good move. Taking away an established franchise where the majority of fans of said franchise is on the other platform (all so they can move some Console units)...is pretty cheap, and hurts a lot of gamers.

I don't see this as a good thing for our industry.
I can see where you are coming from. I guess my only gripe then is how you cite a majority of fans being on one platform, when that should be irrelevant when discussing how gamers are hurt from bought exclusivity.
More first party exclusives, less third party exclusives (especially if a sequel to a game that was previously released) please.
I want more third party exclusives, but not if they are timed. Timed exclusives are obnoxious, as is exclusive content.

Such a strange move if it's not timed. I think it is timed but if it eventually isn't, that will not make me buy a XB1. That will only make me not buy the game. A lose-lose situation really.

From the same company that cried when they sold 3.4 million of the reboot to this sequel in a month, this is the most baffling decision I've ever seen.

TR is my favorite franchise. Now I will not be buying this game because I will not be buying an Xbox. They will lose a fan that has been following the series since the PSX days.

Mission accomplished?

You're not buying it even when it comes to PS4?

I mean, most companies do try to estimate/account for a percentage of the market that they will lose completely when making deals like this. It's not like a hand-shake deal over beers one night.

I am interested to see, as development costs continue to rise, how many third party developers start to value the up-front, guaranteed money that contracts like these can provide. We saw last generation, that they loved the up-front DLC money, but obviously that's going to be significantly less for a timed or total full game exclusive.

I just think it's hilarious after they complained about the first one failing to live up to expectations on three established platforms.

This is the most insane part. Games are selling better on PS4, ot has a higher install base and yet this is Xbox exclusive. I can't fathom how this is possible. MS must have thrown so much cash at SE for this. I just don't know what to say. I'm genuinly shocked and disappointed at SE. Tomb Raider has been on PS platforms since the beginning and now they say 'oh well you have the osiris game'. Fuck that

I seriously hope it is permanently exclusive. I wish I still drank so I could take a celebratory drink right now lol

I'm so with you. I spent so much of yesterday arguing with people who didn't believe I hate this game that I'm actually starting to wonder myself if I knew about this in advance and was just pre-emptively softening the blow.

Running studios cost money, buying exclusives is a one off investment you don't have to bother doing after a year or two.
See 360 for example.

I can see where you are coming from. I guess my only gripe then is how you cite a majority of fans being on one platform, when that should be irrelevant when discussing how gamers are hurt from bought exclusivity.

You don't think it matters in this case? Someone posted figures, that showed the majority of people buying TR games are on another platform. So I think that is totally relevant in this decision (at least on CD's end). I'm not 100% putting this off on MS to be clear. I think one has to look at CD and question if what they are doing is good for their reputation, and how it's going to impact the fan base for this franchise (especially when sales numbers show the majority of them will be shut out on this game).

Like I said, short term..I get the benefit for MS and CD. But I really think this is damaging to CD's reputation. I dunno. Just how I feel. As I said, I approach every situation by an individual basis. And I don't really like this deal. I'm an X1 owner and PS4 owner, and I think it's really messed up for the overall fan base. I feel bad for them. And I personally don't think these practices are good for the industry as a whole. I actually think they are cheap/lazy, and is something done out of desperation rather than really competing.

Well I read the Hellblade thread, and haven't read anyone complaining about the timed exclusivity, but lot of people are fuming over TR deal which begs a question, why they are not pissed at timed exclusive offers that Sony has invested in?

Because you're removing context and comparing a new IP to an existing franchise.

I don't know about that. In a sense it's Microsoft being committed to their product that I spent $499 on. It's rewarding us by offering exclusives that add value to our purchase. I agree with all of this. At the end of the day this is business.

Agreed. MS and Sony should invest in new IP, and securing exclusives by helping publish or give money to studios that see it as a good deal. What MS did with Sunset was a very good move. I don't see this as a good thing for our industry.
It's not good for the industry, period. Oh and the distinction is as clear as daylight.

Yeah I guess I could see that. I guess being a multi console owner for years and years had made me over look this type of thing because I'll be able to play it anyways if/when I want.

At the same time they are doing something for their supporters of xbox. Sure it is more in their interest and not ours but at the end of the day I have never had much vested interest in a company. I only care about the games I get to play.

So I can see how it would rub some wrong.
Well, some people do take these things way too personally.

Like I said, I approach these on an individual basis, and don't lump everything into ONE.
Well then, you must be doing it wrong. ;)

Square enix have just screwed themselves, good luck with that you idiots, prepare to sell about 50,000 copies total. Also microsoft have no fuckng soul at all,and also they have no games..fuck em both :)

This is the most insane part. Games are selling better on PS4, ot has a higher install base and yet this is Xbox exclusive. I can't fathom how this is possible. SE is the master of great management lately.

thats some nefarious fucking wording if true. i mean what does it accomplish but to draw the ire of reactionary console warriors? it completely paints MS in a negative way

Holy shit.

That must be a boat load of money to practically write off millions of possible customers during the fucking holidays for a console that is trailing by at least 5+ million.

Especially considering Square bitched about the game not performing to expectations when it came out at the END of a generation.

And lol at the "You have the other games, y u so mad?"

And that's not even considering the sales gap a year from now.

I really wish MS would pay for genuine exclusives rather than these fucking timed third party shit. And I bet they paid tens of millions. Fucking use that money and make genuine first party exclusives. For fucks sake. Ridiculous.

I don't know about that. In a sense it's Microsoft being committed to their product that I spent $499 on. It's rewarding us by offering exclusives that add value to our purchase.

You would have got the game anyway, it doesn't add anything.

Putting the money towards a new IP or new sequel in an already Xbox only franchise would add something.

You're not buying it even when it comes to PS4?

I mean, most companies do try to estimate/account for a percentage of the market that they will lose completely when making deals like this. It's not like a hand-shake deal over beers one night.

We saw last generation, that they loved the up-front DLC money, but obviously that's going to be significantly less for a timed or total full game exclusive.

Since they will make me wait 6+ months most likely I will just wait a little longer and grab it when it is $20 used.

Ok, this pisses me off. Tomb Raider was one of my favorite games of last year and I only have a PS4. I won't be buying an Xbox to play this and it puts me off of ever buying one even further. SE and MS can screw off.

It's no doubt timed (and if by some ridiculous chance it isn't then just wow) and so I'll buy the "Definitive" edition on PS4...used.

I will play this game and I will not support either SE or MS when I do it.

You have to wonder if the moneyhat is really worth it in the current climate. The PS4's lead is only going to increase and there's just no way the game sells more as an (timed) exclusive.

From MS's perspective, does Tomb Raider sell consoles?

Weird.
You just know they tried this first with Activision with CoD and then EA with Battlefield, then Ubisoft with something before landing at Squreenix where they got their deal.

Needless confusion.

The PR coming from Crystal Dynamics was pretty odious too.

You don't think it matters in this case? Someone posted figures, that showed the majority of people buying TR games are on another platform. Your point was that it is scummy and hurts gamers. A group does not have to be a majority to be hurt by exclusivity. Had Tomb Raider sold 1MM more units on XBOX would you feel differently? I don't think it would diminish the point of it hurting gamers.

We will have to wait and see how well it sells on the PS4 when it releases.

It will sell like shit, 1 mil tops. The hype for the game will be gone at that time and the advertising for the late port will be minimal (something MS will make sure to be put in the contract).

In order to get the cash from Microsoft I'd assume they would have to forfeit the release of the PC version as well. CD was probably more than happy to do so.

Do think Tomb Raider franchise have bad sales in PC? I don't have any numbers, but I think TR is big in PCs.

I just genuinely think that Uncharted scared the shit out of them, so instead of releasing a game on a platform in the shadow of a giant they ran and got some cash. The PC version is just a casualty as a part of the negotiations. That would just make too much sense to me.

Unless they're going to copy UC, then the 2 games will be different. And if it's good game it will sell, if it's not it won't, it's simple.

I understand that Hellblade being a timed exclusive for the PS4 and TR being a timed exclusive for XB1 are not "1-1", but theres a lot of similarities considering there's absolutely no backlash on the Hellblade front. MS is just going to be made out to be the villain this entire gen, huh?

I think like I and others have said, I think it depends on IP. The point is Hellblade is not part of an established franchise, whereas Tomb Raider is. Standalone games are taken far different than franchises.

I wouldn't call Microsoft villains, but shady. Not directly for their actions here, but their hollow PR words to try and spin this as a platform exclusive instead of what it really is, a timed exclusive. I cannot stand any fucking company that does that, and Sony has done the same before. I guess I hate PR, because I know it's all bullshit.

Seems there is some mixed messages, but it seems clear it's timed.

I am hoping it's permanent though. I think it'd kill the franchise's growth in its tracks and hopefully permanently put away the new shitty formulation of Tomb Raider once and for all.
