Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

First one was a decent Uncharted clone but I'll be waiting till it's $5 on Steam regardless. First game dropped price super quick and had zero replay value.

Probably not worth the money, but that never stopped MS moneyhats.

If it is truly exclusive how can you compare a game on X1 to a game not on PS4?

According to you TR not on PS4 is a better version than TR on X1. wow.

Excellent reading skills there buddy LOL

That's kind of a dick move considering every single Tomb Raider game ever came out on PC.

Hell, I've literally bought every single tomb raider game, on PC.

All that support and this is what I get?

I feel really slighted. Even though I've never even played the last tomb raider game (despite owning it).

My strong impression from how they kept linking exclusive with 2015, was that it was timed, and pc and ps4 will get the game the following year.
I can understand why a slightly desperate Microsoft have decided to go for this, but I think it is a really poor decision, from SE point of view. It definitely risks alienating a lot of fans. I find it hard to believe that the game will all as well on ps4 with a delay. I would have thought you are going to get more sales if you can be part of that initial launch hype. If the game is in any way mediocre, then you will lose a lot of sales from the people who would have bought on release.
If it is a true exclusive then I think they have just buried the series.
I would LOVE to know the financial details on this deal. I would assume Microsoft are in some way guaranteeing the production costs and agreeing to shoulder a lot of the marketing costs. I would really like to understand how it works out financial for MS, given that it would be y unrealistic to expect this to be a systems seller .

Wow, I actually loved it. I remember getting the Gameinformer a whole back when it was on the cover and was so hype for that. Bought it day one two and loved it. I loved tomb raider when I was a kid and thought this was a huge evolution for the series. I understand it could of kept a lot more of its originality but I had hoped that since part 1 was introducing the story, part 2 would bring it back to the roots. I have an Xbox One so I'm not exactly missing out on it, but it sure is disappointing to say the least, others who don't have the funds to buy the Xbox One or who don't want one - wasn't at one point able to play it.

I don't want it to die :(. But rather it be put in more competent hands that isn't only bias to money (Square).
Same here, one of my favorite games last gen, pity about the exclusivity, really hope this doesn't cripple the franchise at all : /

Good for you, but some people like the direction TR has taken, and it would be better if you stop pissing at the game in this thread considering the fact you don't even care about it in the first place.

Fuck no. I loved Tomb Raider franchise since the very first day it was release, and I won't stop commenting on its follow ups. My concern for the franchise is absolute. Therefore, just as people like you can share why you love it forever, I am allowed infinitely to share why I do not. I do in fact care about it - which is why my anger on this score is so vivid.

Consider it yet another perspective on this announcement. Some people are fanboys and want it to stay only on their system, some people are fanboys and are pissed Microsoft scored, some people aren't fanboys but just want to play it on PS or PC, some people aren't fanboys and are just happy it's coming to XBO. I'm yet another side of the coin.

More IP's? What about Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, KI, scalebound, or even crackdown 3?

Indeed, i don't know why you all blame microsoft for lack of new IP and exclusives, so far Xbox One has Dead Rising 3, Killer Instict, Ryse, Forza 5, Titanfall, and will have Quantum Break, Sunset Overdrive, Scalebound, Crackdown 3 and now Tomb Raider.
Sony instead has just Killzone, Knack and Infamous on PS4 right now, with The Order, Driveclub and Bloodborn to come.

Square Enix just might be the most confusing publisher out there. Like, who wins here? 'Cause SE definitely don't by making their game less available.

I think it speaks to their financial state at the moment. I think the guaranteed cash up front has more immediate value than the projected revenues from the PS4 version of the game for a few months.

This is why I'm absolutely confused at this move right now, either SE is going to knowingly sell an absolute bomba in their eyes, or MS compensated for their bloated expectations.

I think you could make that argument if

a) Game quality was always directly correlated with revenue

b) The game was a total exclusive, but if it's just a timed exclusive, all Square Enix is doing is delaying revenue from one version by a quarter or two. Even if you take into account lost sales from people who lose interest in the game between the time of it's XBO release and the PS4 release, they're probably making out ahead, and have money they can actually spend immediately, vs money that might turn into debt.

also the PS4 might be at 30M units by 2015 Holidays, MS must have paid huge for this or SE made some dumb management decisions

Yup, lol.

TR is my favorite franchise. Now I will not be buying this game because I will not be buying an Xbox. They will lose a fan that has been following the series since the PSX days.

Mission accomplished?

Same here and I bought the re-release for PS4 and can't play the sequel, lol S-E.

I just think it's hilarious after they complained about the first one failing to live up to expectations on three established platforms.

This is the best, such a bad short sighted decision.

If MS paid SE for exclusivity and the price tag was anywhere less than $180,000,000 (3 million copies on ps4 assumed) then holy crap SE, bad call.

I thought devs learned from Titanfall already....

lol They dont get the full 60 from a 60 dollar game sale!!

So, the disc and packaging is free? gamestop and other retailers sell them for nothing? sony and Microsoft let games on their system for no royalties? and there is no import taxes to be paid in foreign countries lol

Fuck, I need to become a publisher

I'm a bit late to this. Let me get this straight.

Square has repeatedly said Tomb Raider (2011) underperformed (despite 6m? sales)
So they release it timed exclusive on the least populated console that will hurt it's holiday sales?
Also Tomb Raider is kind of known as a Playstation game. Started there and a lot of the beloved games were Playstaton games.

As a Saturn owner I can tell you Tomb Raider didn't start there at all.

10 million ps4s vs <5 xbone of course there will be more complaining when a game is exclusive to xbone. We outnumber them 2:1.

Fuck Microsoft
LOL 'we' and 'them'?

jennifer-lawrence-ok-thumbs-up.gif

Name me a 3rd party game/series that Sony has purchased and kept off Xbox platforms.

Hellblade and Bloodborne are considered first party games since Sony itself has published these games, but when MS publish Sunset Overdrive or Titanfall then there is a baclash among gamers. Why is that?

eh im kinda weirded out by this. what if we support this and dawn of the tomb raider is exclusive to dreamcast 2 ? theres no guarantee that they wont do this again with another platform.

how long is the exclusivity window ? any more than 6 months and the other versions will be a fart in the wind.

10 million ps4s vs <5 xbone of course there will be more complaining when a game is exclusive to xbone. We outnumber them 2:1.

Fuck Microsoft

M$ doesn't care about them at all. I can go to sleep at night knowing that Sony truly cares about me as a consumer, and values my time and dollars. We will beat M$ this time from the start, like we should have last gen. Return of the king #ps4NODRM

Aint even mad about this. I feel its comibg to ps4 too. SE needs money. You bet by january they will be announcing the ps4/pc versions. I already got so much planned to play. It wont matter TR will come out this year or not. I still wobt be able to play it.

Unless its Bloodborne.
Bloodborne's basically the same as either Scale Bound or Sunset Overdrive, a game that feasibly could not exist without the platform holder funding/publishing. Especially as Bandai Namco may not have wanted anything BUT more Dark Souls.

xbox has a boner for anythign with the word rise (ryse, son of rome, Dead RISing, Rise of the tomb raider). all of them were only timed tho. hopefully this game will rise to other platforms as well.

Its basically a short-sighted cash infusion for Square Enix, at the expense of possible franchise importance later.

What could be a game that fans of the first game were looking forward to, could alienate those same fans from further sequels if enough of the fanbase in on Sony systems. Heck, if could mean that the game does even worse if timed exclusivity is up and it gets lost in a glut of other games newer games, as opposed to paying full-price for a flashy port of an older game.

No no no, they were supposed to buy uncharted. Leave the OG on PS.

Not that it really bothers me, the last TR only resemblance to TR was the name and title character, the series has jumped the shark.

Timed exclusive deals and third party developing IP's like Hellbalde or Blood borne ( while MS getting loathed for Titanfall or Sunset Overdrive)

Both are shitty, but what really pisses me off more than the exclusivity itself? JUST BE FUCKING STRAIGHT WITH US. Trying to get a straight answer out of MS regarding the details of the exclusivity is like trying to squeeze water out of a stone. THIS is what is creating ill will. If its 100% exclusive for the lifetime of the title then you should be shouting it from the rooftops. If it's just a timed exclusive, do you REALLY think you can keep that under wraps from now until Winter 2015 to the point it sells systems? I doubt you can keep it under wraps until next week if not tomorrow. This lawyer speak and cryptic answers of it being exclusive holiday 2015 is just silly.

Hellblade and Bloodborne are considered first party games since Sony itself has published these games, but when MS publish Sunset Overdrive or Titanfall then there is a baclash among gamers. Why is that?

uh Hellblade is timed exclusive, Bloodborne is a joint collaboration with Japan Studios?

M$ doesn't care about them at all. I can go to sleep at night knowing that Sony truly cares about me as a consumer, and values my time and dollars. We will beat M$ this time from the start, like we should have last gen. Return of the king #ps4NODRM

This.... is a joke post..... right?

Well one thing CD is getting out of this is a shit ton of publicity. Had they released a multi-plat trailer they would have been just another bullet point. Now they own the stage.

This whole thing is ridiculous, just come fucking clear and say if it's exclusive or timed. The best part of Gamescom was that Sony guy specifying which games were Playstation exclusive and which ones were "first on console".

Projected money up front is worth losing fans for? Then why even support Square anymore if their priorities don't include the fans? Amir0x wants TR dead but I wouldn't mind square leaving the industry. Maybe business with integrity can stay better.

Good, now I don't have to worry about purchasing this garbage that Square thinks we will all consume.

Didn't square say they didn't want to go all in on the PS3 last gen because they didn't want a Playstation 2 like situation again? I guess going with the losers is just so much better. But by this logic, Square could have tossed more than that fucking bahamut game on the Sega Megadrive.

Bloodborne is a Sony IP. There was no Moneyhats involved.

Well, it's an IP that Sony is publishing, in the same way that Sunset Overdrive is an IP that Microsoft is publishing.

In both cases, you could argue that both developers would have found a publisher to back the game, but both 1st parties wanted the game exclusive to them.

Moneyhats were involved, they were just pre-emptive, so nobody could complain about them.

They funded Titanfall and kept EA from canceling the game after Respawn kept going over budget and having poor management.

It doesn't fuck anyone else over. You make it sound like you have some condition or disease that absolutely prevents you from purchasing and enjoy an Xbox One.

Regardless of a consumer having an Xbox One or not, everyone has equal opportunity to play and purchase The Rise of the Tomb Raider. All you do is walk into a store and give money to a company.

Already own an Xbox One? Great. You're "rewarded" for your $500 purchase by being able to play a new exclusive.

Don't own an Xbox One? That's fine. Do you want to play this game? Buy a Xbox One then. If you don't find this game worth playing, don't buy an Xbox One and continue playing your platform of preference.

There's absolutely nothing stopping you right now from playing this game other than your unwillingness to purchase an Xbox One. And that's fine. If you don't want an Xbox One, that's fine. You limit the amount of games you can play though, and I don't think it's reasonable to go around and say statements like "I hope this game bombs and cripples the franchise!"

Nothing is stopping anyone from playing this game but a person's unwillingness to buy a stupid Xbox One.
Excellent post. It just summarizes what I wanted to say. Thank you.

Eh, it would have sold regardless.
The big thing I feel they did right now is create a lot of ill will toward fans and destroy trust in the process for what is supposed to be the continuation of a game that put the TR franchise back on the map.
I wouldn't be sure about your first point, because the only comparison I can think of is Prototype Vs inFAMOUS, and an unknown exclusive on a bleeding Sony platform ended up devouring some of the sales of the competing title.

As for your second point, well I couldn't agree more. The harm this move may bring to the franchise may not be recoupable at all, but this is one area I would say SE specializes better than anyone else!

Well one thing CD is getting out of this is a shit ton of publicity. Had they released a multi-plat trailer they would have been just another bullet point. Now they own the stage.

Same thing happened with GTA V not too long ago at E3. Rock* showed a console-exclusive trailer at Sony's Presser, and everyone was up and arms about it going multiplatform. Official trailer on their YT page confirmed that it was multiplaform after the fact.

every new page of this thread is becoming a repeating cycle now

- this is ms's bayonetta 2!
- but why is bloodborne exclusivity okay??
- oh but you're fine with Destiny timed exclusive DLC?
- it's the next titanfall
- but why is hellblade exclusivity okay?

cOiSwFi.gif
Yep, pretty much.

I love exclusives, and they're certainly necessary, but I just don't like this one. I supported and promoted TR among my group of friends, many of them bought the game as a result for whatever platform they had, they liked/loved it, and we were all excited about the E3 reveal. But now you have to have an XB1 to play its follow-up. I played it on PC and was hoping to play the sequel on PC as well. I got the first TR for $7.50, but I was ready to drop $60 on it at launch. Now? Who knows.

I know it's not their intent, and I know they don't "owe" me anything for my support, but the perception is that of a slap in the face to fans of the series. For me, it has nothing to do with where its exclusivity rests. This is about hurting fans who happen to not have an XB1, of which I'm assuming there are many.

That's my take, anyway.
