Hyrule Warriors (Zelda Musou) Import Impressions

Yeah, the enemies are really easy so far. I'm not changing the difficulty to hard yet, because of how starting on Hard in Akiba's Trip for the ps4 wrecked me while I was streaming, lol.

I really like the upgrade system - you gather materials during missions and buy badges which give you passive effects like increased defense, more hp from healing items or new moves in your combos.
Another interesting thing is a system where a golden skulltula will appear during the mission after meeting certain requirements. If you collect enough, you upgrade your shops etc.

Time to test the fire rod!

So would this game be worth full price? I'm thinking about picking it up for my Wii U but i'm on the fence about it.

I know I can't speak for you, but I personally broke my "no preordering" rule because I don't think this game is going to get a large printing unless it becomes some massive surprise success (which it might). I wanted to make sure I got a new copy because I wanted to boost Nintendo's numbers, and I don't want to go looking for a used copy down the road and have it be near the price of when it was new anyway

I hope you post lot of impressions. I'm still on the fence because the direct made the game seem so braindead; enemies just standing there, combos consisting of just YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.
why would you showcase a game on a difficulty level not set on easy? Every DW I've played is like this even on normal.

set the game on hard then.

This is one of my surprise interests of 2014 that makes me mad I can only afford a few games this year. I'm hoping to find something to sell to get it since it's hitting all of my Zelda nostalgia spots. I don't expect it to be challenging or anything, but just pure fun hopefully.

So, in the 3rd mission I've spotted a chicken. It was really hard to "kill" (it just flies away), but somehow I managed to do it.
And then this happened.

There was a gold chicken in the middle of the crowd, I so killed it after a long struggle and got a message saying that I did it. No achievements, no rare drops. I'm a bit disappointed, but at least it was fun, lol.

I wonder if there's going to be some special achievements about cucco, like that
marathon
one.

On disk DLC?
But Pokemon already happened on the Game Boy...

There's also no voice acting. It's all just text and those weird sounds that characters in Zelda games make while talking.
In some known cases those weird sounds actually did start out as normal voices strangely enough. Minda speaks Engerish even.

Though the chu chus in Wind Waker are mad as it is a Japanese argument played in fast forward then reversed.

Here is my thoughts. Stay on the fence, no need to commit now. The worst that can happen is you'll have to buy it full price off the eShop if say only 12 physical copies of the game were printed but consequently the worst that can happen buying at full price is it becomes bomba (given how easy lives up to its name and livestreams seemed to unlock everything in a matter of hours makes me wonder if it will be traded in a lot) and you dislike it.

I guess if you are in Europe you miss some stupid Ganon costume DLC as you need to registering on Club Nintendo in a certain timeframe.

For me the release date is a poor time for me and my view with games is day 1 full price or wait for sale.

How's the engine/physics? My most recent point of reference is Dynasty Warriors 7, to be honest I thought it was crappy and from videos it looks like DW8 is based on 7. The main problem is hitting enemies feels like slashing air, it lacks the sense of satisfaction and takes away enjoyment of the game.

Just picked it up myself, anybody interested in some videos? If so, I'll record footage and put them up on www.gamersyde.com
Ha, ha, but you hate musou games and don't care about Zelda! You'll sell it faster than me. :p

Honestly thinking about switching to hard, but I'm afraid that it'll mean enemies dealing 2-3 times more damage rather than the AI getting smarter.

The game encourages you to attack cuccos? That's surprising. Past Zeldas always discouraged it by having them swarm you if you did so.

I "killed" one and this happened. The swarm was deadly, in the end I killed the gold one and ran away with barely any health left, while the normal enemies, boss included, did almost no damage to me.

First thing that appears on the screen after the loading screen is a question if you want to set your game to Easy. Lol.

I actually just started the first Pirate Warriors and that exact same message came up. I don't remember it from Pirate Warriors 2 and it definitely wasn't in Warriors Orochi 3: Hyper.

I'm not really a musou expert - does higher difficulty just give them stuff like higher health & stronger attacks, or do they get stuff like being able to break up combos and new attack patterns?

Full price?
Im buying the Wii U specifically for this alone.

No offense but may I ask why? Is it the Zelda fanservice, are you a Musou fan or both? I can enjoy these games (though I'll never buy another non-licensed one after Warriors Orochi 3) but to me there are a dozen better reasons to get a Wii U.

Ah, okay. I see. I guess I'm just surprised they would give you any accolade for killing a rarer one, or anything like that, is all.

Both! Our at least in your latter question, they get much more aggressive and will block and juggle you around.

Previous musou games would let you change difficulty on the fly for better gaming rewards, is it the same here? The crafting system seems perfect for it.

In higher difficulty, grunt soldiers actually attack and range enemies become real threats

Normal and it's really easy so far. Don't think I've had less than max - 3/4 hearts at any point so far.
Sheik unlocked after the 2nd story mission!
There are harder difficulties from the start though, right? I'd assume there'd be like in all the other Musou games I've played, but that weird prompt to change to game to easy that you posted now is making me question it.

After clearing the first 4 areas, I have to say that I don't like the wait-to-attack encounter design. I don't mind not being able to mash one button to kill boss enemies, but having to literally run around them and hope for the one attack that leaves them open for a counter (especially in case of bosses, which require you to use items like bombs, bow and arrows etc.).
I know that this is normal in all Zelda games, but come on, the flow of musou games is completely different. I hope that later bosses are more fun to fight, because I like the idea itself.

Yeah, you can choose Easy, Normal and Hard. I've cleared one mission on Hard and you get a 1.5 multipliers to gathered Rupees.
As for the difficulty itself, the games gets more tedious more than everything, since you can just spam B to dodge all attacks anyway. Think I'll switch back to Normal.

For bosses like dark knight or lizards, just use "hit x 3, side dash" loop, they wont have chance to block, much faster except fighting against ghosts. For some bosses, the damage from braking hexagons is still tedious, you need to use magic bar(green one).

I was talking about the
Poisonous Plant in Mission 4
where you have to
wait for it to become non-metal or else your attack will be blocked
. I was circling it for good 2 minutes waiting.

Oh, yeah that one if painful when I first time fighting it.
I find out that most of the time, you can hit all 4 heads during it's first attack, just need some good timing to use boomerang.

I'm calling it a day. The game is fun, but after playing "real" Musou games like DW or Basara, it the gameplay feels a bit simple. I like the character progression/upgrade system though. That said, while buying upgrades for each character is fine, having to get extra hearts with each one of them feels like a bit of a grind.

The weapon synthesis system is kind of cool. I've made this beauty today:

That's not a very fun way to play a Dynasty Warriors game.

I agree and hope that there's more to this game.

I've never played a DW game or even any other musou game for that matter so I'm not familiar with the genre. I've seen mentioned that the higher difficulties require you to be more technical and that some games have really hard to achieve secret goals but all I've seen of HW so far just reinforces the ''musou games are boring button mashers'' image I had.

set the game on hard then.

If the easy difficulty makes your game look like a brainless button masher then you definitely should showcase the higher difficulties.

Play on hard/hero difficulty and this strategy means you will die. A lot.

Only really played and loved Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3.
But as someone who always loved Zelda(my #2 franchise after Metal Gear) Hyrule Warriors is something I see as being very unique and special that I can't get anywhere else.

For me while im excited as always, Zelda U is another regular Zelda game that likely won't be better than Majora's Mask and OOT.
Mario Kart is just another Mario Kart.
And so on. While they are amazing games they are something you can experience alot of without a Wii U so they aren't the main reason to jump in.
I see those games are reasons to own a Wii U but I see stuff like Hyrule Warriors and maybe Splatoon as reasons to rush out and buy one.

Hyrule Warriors on the other hand can only be experienced on Wii U. It certainly won't be better than an actual Zelda but it isn't an actual Zelda so it doesn't compare.
It just a pure fanservice game and thats all it needs to be.
Going all the way back to OOT, I wanted to be able to play as characters like Sheik.
Then add other characters like Midna who is my absolute favorite Zelda character who I never really expected to see again and is actually playable.
Hyrule Warriors is a game I must own.

I just unlocked a bonus stage in adventure mode.

I collected 20 golded skulltula puzzle pieces, and completed this pic, it's called "the true partner". lol

The bonus stage
let you choose all the characters, has one NPC Link, Dark Link is the stage boss. All the girls are third faction at the beginning of the stage. You'll be asked to approach one of the girls. after I approached Zelda she became my partner, and rest of the girls turn into red team. lol, I was killed immediately by them, must be chaos difficulty.

And this is why Harem anime ends without the main character picking a single girl.

Oooh have you unlocked the master sword or it'll be the "ultimate weapon"?
I have to ask, how is the frame rate on the game? is it 60? 30? is it stable or it fluctuates?
Believe Musou games aim for a stable 30 so that, more fluctuation when everything's burning though, at least in DW Chi Bi sections =/

That looks like the DW8 upgrade system almost 1:1.
Each weapon has a random set of skills attached to it.
You can combine weapons and pay in gems to upgrade/combine into stronger versions of the same weapon with better skill sets.

How does coop works? I've read that one player plays on TV, the other plays on the Gamepad. Does it work well?

That's my main concern since I want this game for coop play.

Thanks :D

Not during the missions but there was a voiced narration at the end of the first mission.
Yeah, the narration between missions is voiced. Noticed that after writing the post.
I hate that you can't skip text boxes once you're done reading. So slow...
