Phil Spencer: MS will spend money on marketing and developing Rise of the Tomb Raider

I think this game will be like a Resident Evil 4 situation. Xbox One = Gamecube, PS2 = PS4.

PS2/PS4 sales were too large to ignore, but the original release (GCN/X1) will have stronger sales simply due to having the title first.

RE4 sold more on PS2 than on the NGC.

<looks at the massive lineup of games coming in 2015>
<looks at the amount of time had for playing actual games>

What's worse is that I know I'll still be catching up on 2014 titles as well.

Shadow's of Mordor, Evil Within, Watch Dogs, Far Cry 4. I know I won't get any of those this year, but I do want to get that at some point.

My jaw is seriously dropping now.

Just earlier today, tons of posts about Sony being different because they help pay for development and marketing costs and that justify their exclusives, yet no matter what Microsoft does they are either liars, NSA spies or scum.

Stop for a moment and consider the double standard here.
Leave Microsoft alone ;_;

MS would never agree to helping develop a game that would eventually release on PS. So its probably not coming to PS. Expect PC and 360 release probably a year after XO release. And if they are also publishing..than damn SE is gonna get some hate for this lol.

This sounds very logical. It makes the most sense.

lol the inevitable SE claiming ROTR has flopped.

I do wonder how severe the decline in sales will be though initially.

Very substantial I'd imagine, it will sell a fraction of the amount it would on all platforms, I think this series is drawing to a sad end, it's a pity really I had a blast over the year's.

This is off topic do we think we will see any of the other third party exclusives on PS4? Dead Rising, Ryse, Sunset Overdrive, Scalebound? Or just PC?

Scalebound is probably a full exclusive. Remember Bayonetta was built as 360 exclusive too, its not like platinum have a problem making exclusive titles.

Dead rising 3.5 Will probably end up on PS4. If it doesn't, capcom is properly pretty much done with the franchise for a while.

Ryse probably wont, unless Sony pays for its development in some way. Crytek most likely can publish it wherever they want now, but I don't see an incentive for them to do so. They want to move into F2p full time.

Sunset overdrive 2 is coming to PS4. No question. I doubt The first game will leave Xbox platforms. Maybe a 360/PC port down the line.

Spencer has been part of ms since he began working at ms. Dunno why people pretend he is some kind of messianic figure. Whatever helps u sleep at night.

Now if you'll excuse me I am going to go troll brohei broshida on the twitter

Well, all I can say is that Gamescom truly revelead him. I thought he was different from Mattrick, but he is not.

No just previous Tomb Raider XBox exclusive threads. People said Sony were the good guys because they didnt just pay for exclusivity without doing anything like Microsoft.

Now Microsoft confirms they are doing something, and now that's not a thing anymore. I just don't get that line of thinking.

I mean, either you have to vilify all the exclusives, or have to be open for that its fair of both companies to make use of it.

I do. Bayonetta 2 should be available on all platforms but them's the breaks when Nintendo fronts you the cash. I'm not going to cry bloody murder about it. It is what it is but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

It's almost like people want Phil to say "hey tomb raider is coming exclusively to Xbox next holiday but don't work ps4/PC fans, tomb raider is coming to your platform exactly 6 months later."

That's not it. We want him to stop being a jackass and using cagey PR doublespeak to confuse the issue. There's only three words that he had to say and this would have been over and done with from the get go:

First on Xbox.

That's it. That's all. Three little words and there'd be no confusion and people would have shrugged and moved on. Instead of putzes about using the word exclusive and does everything he can to obfuscate the issue. "Console debut" would have also worked. Exclusivity needs stop being thrown around unless it's really exclusive or you paint a really clear picture with what you're done.

Anyways, none of this would have turned into a PR nightmare if they had just used those three little words and had a concise and clear message instead of going back to their 2013 MS Mixed Messaging Extravaganza.

So kind of similar as to what Spencer says in this interview “I didn’t buy the IP, so I don’t own Tomb Raider as a franchise. Our deal obviously has a duration". Or are you only happy when Spencer comes to your home holding a cake with the text "sorry I was wrong TR is coming to the PS4 and it runs a dozens times better".

But then again it doesn't surprise me seeing you acting this in a MS thread. Don't you ever get tired of yourself?

Did you need read the OP where he draws comparisons to DR3 which implies something different? Why do thing people are confused?

All the man had to do was say it's debuting on Xbox. This co-publishing non-sense just adds more noise and confuses people.

lol. Isn't that the point?
Whether this is coming to PS4 or not the more people that think it isn't the better.

Phil Spencer just paid a shit load of money for exclusivity and doesn't give a shit about giving ps4/PC users a straight answer and its in his best interest not too really.

GAF is in a tizzy again lol. They worked out a deal with Squeenix but they do not own the franchise. This means that even though MS has exclusivity when it releases, the deal has a duration. Spencer might not be in a place to comment on squares plans with the franchise. If people are curious about what SE plans to do with TR concerning Sony you should probably ask SE.

I think it's best if MS either come out and say exactly what the deal is (they won't) or just completely let it go and not mention anything until the game is out.

The thing a lot of people don't realize with indie devs is that Sony has fostered such a good relationship with them the last few years that they haven't needed to buy exclusivity.

You can look at comments made by Mike Bithell (Volume), Jonathan Blow (The Witness), or Lorne Lanning (Oddworld). There's a reason that none of these games had (or will have) an XB1 version at launch, and that's simply that Sony's platform made more sense to develop for at first, and that is where they put their focus.

You're wrong if you think Sony isn't signing these indies to exclusives. From http://gamingbolt.com/rogue-legacy-...y-pro-active-in-getting-it-on-their-platforms

Rashid Sayed: Rogue Legacy has been announced for a number of platforms but not for the Xbox One. Is there a specific reason for the same?

Kenny Lee: Yup. That’s because we have an exclusivity agreement with Sony

That's an ambiguous answer, brought about by a deal that makes it ambiguous whether it is going to a certain platform. Its how these things have always been.

Are you seriously comparing a huge studio with over 100+ staff to a small indie studio? Really? The reason why Hello Games aren't giving definitive answers over that is pretty fucking obvious and it has little to do with Sony. They don't know. They don't have the development resources to work on multiple platforms simultaneously, so they have to pick and choose where they go first and maybe they'll port it elsewhere once that's done.

Dude, it's really crazy how people are acting like he didn't say "duration" in one interview and "like DR3" (which had a duration) in another. Coming to PS4 (which is what I see people argue about) is not his job and saying it's NOT coming to PS4 is also not his job. He doesn't have to mention anything about PS4 lineup if he doesn't want to and people are "upset" about that. It's really baffling.

They did for Titanfall why can't they do it here?

If it's more than First on Xbox or whatever, then I hope we get some strong Xbox One integration, such as cloud processing and impulse triggers. Otherwise, pfft.

They should get Rare to pitch in on development, heaven only knows what those poor guys are doing these days.

They're watching that drinking bird or maybe counting the number of cars that pass by their building. Hell, maybe even sometimes the boss orders pizza and they all eat quietly as they go back to their desks and think about what could have been.

Scalebound is probably a full exclusive. Remember Bayonetta was built as 360 exclusive too, its not like platinum have a problem making exclusive titles.

What is this post?

Wow, it this game is full exclusive the Tomb Raider franchise is dead. They had to release the last one on 5 or 6 platforms to make a reasonable profit. God only knows how many units the Xbone will shift by next holiday or if the 360 market will even exist by then. Square would basically be sending the franchise out to die by doing this.

I'm kind of excited about this now. I enjoyed the last one but watching Square mismanage its properties is pretty entertaining too.

I remember playing many amazing games last gen. You're being ridiculous if you think it being cross-gen means the game is going to be a disappointment by some fictitious next-gen standard.
What I mean is I find it odd that they are putting all this money down for a game that will probably only look as good as the best PS3 game when it's done. If it were going to be current gen only then it makes more sense but it's not. I still see the whole thing as a bad move on MS end but we will see.

I think this as well. But I honestly don't think square will bite. Best case scenario is a 12 month exclusive on consoles, 6 months on PC.

The game is coming to PS4 in some form. The question is when.

All of this is really reminding me of the statements MS made for Titanfall back in 2013.

MS wanted it to look like an Xbox One exclusive but people all assumed that it would eventually come to Playstation too (timed exclusive) -- well, until MS paid money for it not to come out on Playstation back in October.

I didn't mean to encompass all indie games, just saying there's numerous examples where they came "first to Playstation" for reasons other than pure money.

It doesn't sound like Timed Exclusive anymore.
It sounds like Console Exclusive.

There's no way Microsoft is paying for a game that will be on Sony consoles.

If it was console exclusive they'd just say so, there's absolutely zero reason or upside to them being sketchy on that point unless the agreement actually doesn't prevent a PS4 version.

If it's more than First on Xbox or whatever, then I hope we get some strong Xbox One integration, such as cloud processing and impulse triggers. Otherwise, pfft.

Yeah I'm sure the magic cloud will get up and running as soon as Shenmue 3 comes out and Albert Penello tells the truth.

This one made me LOL

Bull fucking shit are you going to have me believe that multimillion corporation Square Enix sold multimillions of Tomb Raider to the the tune of around 6+ million are having trouble poneying up money for a sequel.

Yeah I'm really not buying the "funding development" angle. The only way they're probably helping is to optimize the game/keep it up to date with drivers etc. I have no doubt in my mind that Square was making this game irregardless of MS' involvement.
