Phil Spencer: MS will spend money on marketing and developing Rise of the Tomb Raider

*sigh* Can someone just explain this in plain English for fuck's sake? Is that too much to ask?

Is it a timed exclusive, a console exclusive or a full exclusive?
Is MS publishing or is SE?

These are not difficult questions to answer and yet every time you have opened your mouths we end up with more questions instead of less.
As it is now nobody is sure if anything because every word out of your mouths is aimed to obfuscate instead of elucidate. THIS IS DOING YOU NO FAVORS! You are just making yourselves look either sleazy or grossly incompetent. Stop the BS and answer the damn questions! FFS
Why should MS feel obligated to discuss when the game is available on other platforms? They're not concerned about angry PS4 owners who are miffed regarding the games uncertain appearance on rival machines. They hashed out a deal to make their platform more appealing to their current and potential customers. That's all that matters to them and probably 99% of their user base.

Except he said Microsoft is "paying for development" which is either not true or the game is exclusive.

You could interpret any payment from one company to another as "paying for development".

Because off-setting costs is exactly what payment for a timed exclusive is. Where the PR wants to put that money is pretty meaningless, it's just PR-speak. It's not like he's putting it in an accounting book somewhere.

Paying for development may just be the new code word for "bought timed exclusivity".

The only reason a PS4 owner was gonna get upset over this if he/she wasn't planning to buy an Xbox in the foreseeable future.

As a PS4 owner myself who's GOING to get one, it just makes my purchase that much more attractive.

Nope. I plan on getting a One this fall and this deal still sucks. Besides the fact that it isn't a new IP and we know it was intended to continue as multiplat, I simply don't want to buy multiplat games on One because it's weaker and they all have graphical compromises compared to PS4. I can't buy Tomb Raider knowing a better looking PS4 version is likely in the works because Xbox can't deliver the same graphical power at debut.

Okay seriously now.

I hear it a lot for it to just be a joke, but supposedly MS is "writing checks" for exclusives and this is a bad thing right?

Do you honestly think that Sony doesn't do this for all of their first-party games? Do you think Sony's exclusives are exclusive because the devs like PlayStation more, so it is more deserving?

Are you basically applauding fanboy developers, or saying those who think it is smarter to make games for PS4 are just less interested in money?

Games are never supposed to be about making as much money as possible?

You're not "supporting" the PS4 the way football club fans "support" their team by cheering the console on every time there is good news like 10mil sales. You are not buying games to fund Sony, you are buying games to enjoy them. You are consuming what they have to offer, not "supporting".

If you own both and you choose to "boycot" Tomb Raider because you feel that MS shouldn't ever conduct business and should, I dunno, make a HaloBox and accept Sony are just better, then grow the hell up or admit you weren't interested in Tomb Raider anyway.

Totally irrational. I understand being salty there is no Tomb Raider on PS4 if it's the console of your choice, but MS aren't "evil". I can't play Dreamfalls on the Xbone because Sony bought/funded up exclusivity, despite loving the original on the Xbox. That doesn't make me suddenly not interested in the game.

But I guess y'all all agree that Johnathan Blow is a smart dude making The Witness exclusive to PS4 just 'cause "fuck MS".

Boom there it is. Eat crow to all those who said it was not timed.

Dam it took us a lot of pages but we got there. Everyone agree its timed and the world is cool again. LOL

Best moment of the thread goes to the gentlemen who screen caped the article in OP saying it was timed. Everyone was like just confirm the PS4 version shill at Phil.

Confirmed time at the bottom, ohhh nice.

AUGUST 15 UPDATE:

Ok. So now I have something to say.

Looks like MS contractually prohibited CD from saying it was a timed exclusive. Now that Phil himself has clarified it (indirectly), they are referring to his article.

Piss off potential customers to the point where they want nothing to do with your product. Genius.

People still not understanding. It's business, stop taking it so personally. Did Alex Ferguson worry about his reputation amongst Liverpool fans(sorry non football fans)? Would that have made him better or worst at his job?

He's not pissing off potential customers, he's giving those potential customers more of an incentive to buy the console.

Again, the only people upset by this 'controversy' are individuals that are certain they won't buy an Xbox one in the next year. I know it might be hard to hear but Phil Spencer and Microsoft really don't care about people who are never going to buy their product.

If all Phil Spencer did was worry about his reputation amongst people that were never going to buy Xbox ones anyway, his job would be quite difficult.

And please don't throw in an absolutely ridiculous statement such as 'i was about to buy an Xbox one, until this tomb raider thing happened!!' because that would be a little silly. You need to refocus your anger, you should be mad at SE and CD if anyone, you have paid for their products in the past and you are genuinely a potential customer for them.

MS is taking the brunt of the blow back. CD can just develop their game, take that money and then release on platforms as their deal with MS will allow.

This situation is literally Crystal D having their cake and eating it too.

Ae you kidding? Tomb Raider forums have been furious at CD and Square.

Spencer said its up to Square if they wanna release it later on other consoles. If square loves money like some of you say, then the answer should be a no brainer. Both Sony and Microsoft have shitty business practices. Exclusives sell consoles and these folks are in this to make money. There is no right or wrong just money.

Is it a complete exclusive? Is it not? We'll never know.

This doesn’t mean that we’re walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC. Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December, and Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition is available on PS4.

hahaha.. what a joke

how many times does this have to be explained to people? it's not about the freaking exclusivity, it's about the bullshit backwards PR speak and deceptive wording about if it's a timed exclusive or not.

So they weren't allowed to talk about the nature of the exclusivity as expected. Makes Spencer look even worse telling interviewers to ask Square Enix or CD if the game is coming out on other platforms.

That was fucking stupid of Spencer.

We knew it was timed before this tumblr blog update, no? Heck they're even citing the same Eurogamer article.

We knew it was timed before this tumblr blog update, no?

Yup. It's just funny that CD wouldn't admit it until MS did, which makes me think that's how their contract was worded. It's actually the same deal that Sony had done with Activision for Diablo III. "Pretend like the other version doesn't exist until <insert date here>"

maybe you had a point but then you said this and I couldn't stop laughing

yeah I wonder why those many of those devs make games for PlayStation. Maybe it's because Sony OWNS those developers? lol

So this marks the end of SE with their stupidity and MS is just throwing money for shits and giggles. Sounds about right.

How the fuck did anyone think this was timed to begin with? When you ask a straight question, and get a jumble fuck of PR words back at you, it's not a true exclusive.

Funny, there are people who already own a One that think this is stupid too. This is dismissive drivel. Clearly not everybody sees things the way you do.

Someone really needs to make a post explaining the differences between exclusive games like Bloodborne, Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, ect. to "exclusive" games like TR since it seems some people cant tell the difference.

How the fuck did anyone thing this was timed to begin with? When you ask a straight question, and get a jumble fuck of PR words back at you, it's not a true exclusive.

And that's the issue people are getting increasingly angry over. This persistent, neverending drive to constantly try to obfuscate details of game releases like this. It's very insulting to gamers. Everyone does it at times, and it's wrong every time. But the way Microsoft has been doing it and the frequency with which they are doing is just crazy. Every other day it's a PR shitstorm for them because they can't keep their mouth straight.

I'm not a smart man but even I can see that that is stupid. There is a clear difference man. And so far away from what people wish to see from Xbox. We wan't a gaming company not a fat suit running around money slapping everything to make everyone else's preferred place be worse but instead make their own be better.

FAKE EDIT: Oh and the PR. Just be straight. (no sexual innuendo meant sorry if anyone takes it bad)
