What was wrong with Resident Evil 5?

I mean, aside from playing as a roid-infused white man blasting through indigenous tribesmen living in that swamp.

I thought RE5 was a fantastic co-op game, and even moreso in Mercenaries. I mean, it shits all over the goodness from the pre-RE4 mainline games + Code Veronica, but I felt the sheer amount of fun was enough to make me accept RE5 for what it was like I did with RE4.

This thread is for the folks who say RE5 is a terrible game. I want to know why so I won't assume it's only because it's not a classic RE game.

On a side note, I don't think RE5 should be compared to the terribad RE6, which I would be blind to not acknowledge the glory of RE6's Mercs mode.

Just finished it a week ago on co-op, and it was just as fun as re4 was to me. I loved it, though i never played it with the AI partner which is probably where a lot of he problems are with the game.

My main problem with RE5 was babysitting your partner when playing alone, otherwise I thought the game was a rather good sequel to 4, but not a true resident evil in my books as I love the original trilogy and CV.

It's a good game, but for a previously single player series to go co-op, completely removed the already pared-back horror elements from RE4. There was no tension in the campaign and the partner AI was a joke. The story wasn't particularly memorable either.

Nothing. It's a fantastic game. More so than Resident Evil 4 which is overrated.

Aside from it's graphics Resi 5 is inferior to Resi 4 in every way

It wasn't Resident Evil 4.

I mean, I had a great time with RE5, but, expectations were unreasonably high.

It is a perfectly enjoyable experience if you accept to enjoy as it is: a slightly horror themed action shooter.

And yes, forced co-op sux d0nkey b4llz.

I don't think it's a bad game by itself, but it is a very bad Resident Evil game, and for that I hate it. *tips fedora*

Bad Co-Op ai

Otherwise RE5 is a huge improvement over 4. Limited inventory space, better gunplay, arguably a better environment, and better mercenaries.

Nothing really. RE5 was tons of fun and the game is meant to be played with co-op partner in mind. Playing it single player is just not as satisfying.

the same goes for RE6.

Not a terrible game... A terrible Resident Evil game.

-Co-op
-Takes place in broad daylight
-One puzzle in the entire game (lasers)
-No terror or even slight tension to speak of
-Only looked to RE4 on a superficial level while demonstrating a failure to understand what made it great.

setting didn't allow for much horror (whereas as different as RE4 was, it still had some of that and a much better atmosphere) and forced COOP is just not everyone's cup of tea as such a change in the RE formula going forward (considering 6 also does this)

sheeva AI doesn't help

I like the game tho

Enjoyed all three a lot (RE4, RE5 and RE6).

Even if they go back to more survival horror with RE7 I really hope that they continue to refine the fantastic combat system they have come up with. Hate RE6 all you want but the combat itself was great.

Well, for single player Sheva can be rock stupid and will constantly use the wrong weapon unless you give her two guns max. Heck, if you give her the stun baton, her inventory will quickly fill up with ammo she'll never use

As for the story? Eh, just not my cup of tea for what I have in mind for Resident Evil, but it's not terrible

Yeah, I don't think I could play RE5 alone, which is a huge flaw in my book.

I felt RE5 was too tame compared to 4 honestly in regards to writing. I think this boils down to how Chris is boring compared to RE4 Leon.

Also, I can't remember if RE2 Leon was as snarky.

Nothing wrong with it, I think it's a great co-op game. However, it followed RE4's design maybe a bit too closely and not everyone liked the changes from RE4.

As an aside while this topic is just fresh, it looks like Capcom may be released a Games For Windows Live-free version of Resident Evil 5 soon on Steam, and hopeful that it includes the Gold Edition DLC with it. The DLC for RE5, maybe give or take Versus Mode, was utterly fantastic, and fairly priced and designed.

It had it's moments. But a lot of it is really dumb, including the stupid QTE infused boss fights. I'm sorry, but that's not Resident Evil to me.

Plus, having a worthless AI partner sucked donkey dick.

Compared to RE4, weaker level design, enemy design, and reused parts of RE4 in stale ways. Also the story was god awful and complicated, in stark contrast to RE4's simple and effective one.

The unlock system was cool, but that was probably the only stand out thing.

It was simpler weaker than RE4 in every way, shape, and form except for graphics. It was an obvious downgrade, not an upgrade.

That's what was wrong. Sequels should be upgrades.

RE5 to me looks like the start of Capcom looking at the movies and their success and going "hey, let's kinda do it like that"

Even aside from the plot, atmosphere, AI and setting, it just felt like a blandly derivative attempt to follow in 4's footsteps. Without any of its predecessor's innovation, it was merely a sort-of fun TPS. Which isn't a bad thing, necessarily, but a massive disappointment compared to 4.

It was a terrible RE and did some serious damage to the plot and characters the series was building in the past. Not a bad game though. I still will never forgive them for ruining Spencer. He is the GOAT villain the series ever had and he died in a cut-scene.

RE5 in coop is easily as good as if not better then 4. But played solo with an AI helper, it's a mess.

The game was basically unplayable in single player. Really awesome with a friend. Neither experience really felt like Resident Evil though.

It followed one of the greatest games of all-time, so it was gonna be hard to live up to in general, but I think it turned even less inspiring than expected. The chilling atmosphere from previous games wasn't there. Having a mandatory partner was lousy for people who wanted a horror-focused single player experience(so Resident Evil fans, in other words). The pacing wasn't great and felt like it was a slog at times.

It was just very mediocre and not what a lot of people wanted in general. People accepted the more action-focused gameplay of RE4 because everything else was incredibly well designed and memorable. RE5 has none of that memorable-ness.

took the re4 formula but futzed around with it too much so it didn't really work as well as it did before

it also felt very mechanically shallow considering it was meant to have a lot to do with heat and sunlight exposure which never materialised
