PSN, Battlenet, Riot, and others DDOSed; PSN returning lightly toasted with butter

Hopefully this is not another instance of Sony not bothering to update their FOSS machines to patch known vulnerabilities. I was hoping to get some rounds of MP BF4 today; hey Origin, can you get Sony to let you authenticate known users in case of "PSN is down for maintnance" time periods?

Tim Dog says Xbox live is slow right now because so many people are on it while PSN is down haha

So doesn't this mean that any crazy person with a twiter account can force a plane to land? That seems too easy to abuse.

So I've been gone for the past 3 and a half hours? Anything thing happen since then? This thread was like 24 pages (100 Posts Per Page) last time I was here.

Someone should tweet yosp and let him know about this revolutionary tool.

Read earlier that SOE already uses Akamai, so they had protection. It's just not enough at some point. It's impossible to completely handle a DDOS unless you actually have the bandwidth.

There is only one way to stop this, and that is to ask the ISP to stop the specific source ip address from reaching your network.

Not a quick task though ,, can take sometime depending on the ISP ... hardest part is identifying all the source ip addresses of the attackers, which if you are not setup to capture, will take some time.

I'm not defensive at all. It was just the way you worded it that made me quote what you said, where you said that Sony didnt learn anything from 2011, implying that nothing was changed since then, based on a Youtube video description.

Here:

Thank you.

Don't you guys have google or something?

Yes and they have - http://www.prolexic.com/

http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2011/04/05/sony-enlists-ddos-defense-firm-to-combat-hackers/

And see where that says mitigation not prevention.

You are framing your counterpoint on the premise that the services for PSN are even using Port 80 or 443 for that matter.

I'm sure there is several TCP and UDP ports involved for the file transfers and downloads (21 for example being a FTP protocol)

Port 80 is used for just internet browsing. Any website with HTTP:\\insertwebhere. And 443 is HTTPS.

The GUI of the PS Store could possibly use both since they have a webpage layout but the networking services for online play are entirely different thing.

And it's pointless for Sony to lock it's own service down to prevent access. (Even if you have a Hardware based IPS "Intrusion prevention system") Because that would effectively do the same thing as a DDoS anyways. To prevent outside access. In this case instead of overflow of too much traffic. This is simply not letting ANY traffic get in.

I work in IT for Gods sake, I know what I'm talking about.

Eh...no, I just wanted to know whether there were ways to defend against ddos attacks. I never said I was an expert.

You'd think that Microsoft, one of the biggest tech companies in the world, would be using the utmost protection right? If it affects them, then pretty much any company is vulnerable to that level of attack.

are you telling me that anyone with a mouth can just scream bomb at an airport and mess up the lobby for a day?

that seems too easy to abuse

Didn't that happen with teens recently? Someone tweeted American Airlines or something like that and got arrested then a bunch of teens started tweeted American Airlines saying the same thing?

So MS does indeed have the ability to handle these attacks and clearly Sony doesn't.

So if DDoSing is so easy to do in general and Sony is plainly susceptible to it, then what's keeping assholes from doing this before every big Playstation release?

Jesus Christ, the extent that some people will go to in order to score some console wars points.

That would be jail time that's keeping the assholes away from these kind of things.

So let me sum it up :

We have discusions about
Mom/mum diference.
conspiracy theory's
couple of nutjobs who have flatened multiple company's servers.
They believe they are king of the world.
A plane with a sony guy on board got ridirected because they told there wa a bomb onboard.

The FBI is looking for said perpetrators.

We also discused school results.

Also they BROUGHT DOWN BRAZZERS !

Am i missing anything ?

Are you really that dumb that you think Sony does not have any mitigation/protection against DDoSing? Are you honestly that naive?

Go look up what the SOE guy said. He said that are filtering it out, but they can only filter out as far up the chain as they control.

They cannot control the networks of others. When you try to connect to PSN, or whatever, you'll be hopping around loads of servers and data centres until you reach the end destination. Sony control that end destination, and they're protecting that but they cannot control the hops before you reach them. And if the DDoS is clogging that up, there is nothing they can do about it and that is where, as per the SOE guy said, the problem is.

Actually yes. I know it's surprising but there are very few people on twitter who make such threats/jokes. Probably because no one believes it would work.

Of course, there is always the potential for loads of people to end up doing this if they find out how easy it is. At that point, it's the boy who cried wolf, they don't take anyone seriously, and any actual attacker would use different means in order to be taken seriously.

EDIT: Also the threat of prison. :P
