We're missing some (Also the mii fighters are in a separate selection screen) - All Star Mode is still locked (all star mode has you run the gauntlet through all characters in the game. It only opens after all characters are unlocked)

Can I just point out that the "five DLC" characters theory falls flat considering All-Star mode? It would be scummy beyond belief to lock a game mode behind DLC (even if it's free, it's still not there at launch).

I think we're looking at five hidden characters, maybe with additional DLC.

Starting with Melee, you could unlock trophies that represent Nintendo's entire history. Outside of the actual roster characters, none of them are playable, and a lot of them aren't even characters.

The two last rows have 8 and 5 (4 and the random) characters each.
5 + 4 = 9
8 + 1 = 9

4 + 1 = 5 more characters. Simple as that. There could be secret space, but the grey space you see there are exactly 5 more characters.
