Do you actually care what race/sex a main character is?

You have a very valid point here. Would Samus be treated differently if there was a male in the suit instead of a female? I can only speak for myself, but I enjoyed the Metroid series for how effective the game is in making the player feel isolated, on a desolate planet, with dangerous wildlife and life sucking creatures that are the biggest threat to the galaxy. I'd enjoy Samus either male or female, but I do admit seeing and having Samus as a female is cooler and empowering.

Samus is on of the first ladies of video games and we shouldn't change a thing. It's just one of those observations.

The Metroid manga is actually superb btw.

Yes, I want the Resident evil characters to be female, I prefer jill valentine and Claire instead of Leon and Chris.

After RE5, that's CERTAINLY the case. And I'd like Sheeva to come back in a role that isn't AI dictated.

Wouldn't mind more games straying away from standard white male but it's never put me off a game. Plenty of other reasons to hold onto your money. I almost exclusively create a version of myself when offered because I like to play games as this hero alternative version of myself.

Games that are plot and character driven work best when there's something novel and interesting about the characters, so diversity really pays off. I honestly do not need to play another generic macho-male-asserts-himself-with-guns shooter. I skipped GTA V for exactly this reason.

For reference: white, female.

The only people I've met or known who needed this were the ones who bought a system solely for said game, which makes me wonder if they're the majority of the gamers or not.

I don't care.

I do appreciate the ability to create either a man or a woman of any race as my character though. Character Creators have always had a soft spot in me gaming heart.

I don't care if the player character is male or female at all, if i have the option i usually create both a male and a female character to play through the game with.

But the industry is convinced that games with a female protagonist sell worse, so there must be plenty of people who care.

nope, just want a main character that is interesting. not really a fan of character creators,.. just give me a good character to play don't make me do the art for you.

GTAV's 3 main characters are nothing like that. Trevor is the hilariously crazy Ultimate Hipster, Michael is a mid-life-crisis ex-bank-robber with a family, and Franklin is an ambitious young black man who is an ex-gang banger trying to make it legit and conflicted about all the shit he's getting into.

It deserves being given a chance and shouldn't just be written off as "another generic macho-male-asserts-himself-with-guns shooter" which is a really misguided view of it.

That's poor word choice on my part.

I generally just mean developers who make a game that doesn't have the generic white guy but feel the need to point out they don't have a generic white guy rather than letting the character exist and develop through gameplay and narrative.
Thanks for clarifying. I don't think this really happens anymore though, does it? I have a hard time thinking of any recent examples.

I have my preferences like everyone else but I'm all for developers making what ever they want even if it doesn't fit some asinine idealistic view point of a few.
I'd love to hear you expand on that.

I might be the bad guy, but I'm not a fan of watching a man ass for hours.
It's OK to have some wrong opinions, not everyone can be perfect.
:p

For the most part, no. Whether or not a game features an attractive female, or even male character may influence my purchasing decisions somewhat, but it's never enough to convince me to buy a bad game or keep me from buying a good one.

When given the option to create a character, I usually make a white female, though in some cases I'll make it a white male. That's not to say I'm opposed to playing non-white characters, but I'm not particularly distressed that I don't often play characters that are neither white nor asian, at least not enough to create, for example, a black character just because I can.

Nope. Probably the reason why I rarely care to customise character's looks or gender in RPGish games, most of the time I stick to default

The Nintendo Power comic was amazing at telling Samus' childhood story as being raised by the Chozo.

They have to be considered gamers. They count just as much as a lot of Gaffers discount Candy Crush gamers.

I think, for the most part, people will quickly say no to this question without considering how this can be a subconscious decision being made.

I find that im willing to give a weaker game more time when the protagonist is female, or even try games I wouldn't have otherwise (Remember Me, which i ended up enjoying)

It does matter to me, but it won't stop me from playing a game that is good that doesn't adhere to my standards. There should be more color diversity in MCs in games, period. Same goes for gender.

Nope. I don't think I ever cared. Even with games that feature character creation and customization... I just go with that I think looks interesting. And it's been different with every one of those games for me.

The OP and question are so broad that it's a little unclear what is being asked.

"Do you care if you have to play in every game as a white male?"
"Do you care if the race and sex of the main character fit the game you are playing?"
"Does the race and sex of a main character impact how you feel about a game?"

I think these things matter and affect perceptions of games and those who say they don't care are possibly saying they are open to playing games with protagonists of all races and sexes. Thinking about how it affects the game and how you experience it though drives home the need for more variety of protagonists in general.

Race/Sex, no, I don't care. But in games set with humanoid characters, I usually prefer to be a human species or the most human species. In Elder Scrolls I would prefer not to play as Khajit or the Argonians... I'll almost always choose a human species. When I create a primary character, I usually create a male character, but race doesn't matter to me.

I also prefer not to play as robot characters either.

In games where you can't choose your character, I don't care and will play as whatever as long as it's a good game.

Not particularly in terms of why I buy a game or not, but it is nice to see something besides bald space marine number 57 or spiky haired vaguely Japanese looking youth.

In MMO's though, I tend to roll a lot of females for the eye candy, I fully admit that.

I do think that more uncommon designs tend to stick with me in my memories better then the generic balding hero types.

Yes.

I prefer the ugliest, most repulsive looking race whenever I can over Humans because I get a kick out of it. I'm already a human, why would I want to play as a human in my gamez! No preference of the main character's sex.

Yes, it matters to me.

also, Link should be left-handed. right-handed wiimote users should have just sucked it up for twilight princess and skyward sword.

I have a The Witcher II collectors ed. waiting to be played,
but i dislike playing RPG's without character creation and i always create female characters.
It's probably going to be a while until i get into the mood to play it.

In character creation i usually choose a human-like race that's bulky,
think GWII Norn or FFXIV Roegadyn. Always female too.

It bothers me when, putting the game in. Other than that, It's not something on the tip of my mind for every game I play. The thoughts, do not constantly stay with me every time I play though. Usually, I play mostly female toons when given the choice. I guess, not being able to choose gender bothers me more than race.

So.....at first, I question why, then afterwards, it fades away for me.
