is this really all the new fighters? Thats pathetic. I dont even recognize most of these characters and Im pretty well-versed in Nintendo history...

I don't even play Nintendo games that much, and I know all of these characters. There is a lot of great choices, especially with unrepresented characters.

I get this small troll vibe from your post dude.

Well in that case he's fucked and should make whatever game he wants and it doesn't appear to be Melee.

I'm just saying that if sales matter, Melee sold 7 million to 20 million people while Brawl sold only 5 million more to an audience of 100 million. Melee wasn't nearly as tough to play as he thinks it is, I just think he has a weirdly bizarre complex about it being played competitively.

If you don't recognize most, then you're not well-versed in Nintendo history. Only ones you would get a pass on is Robin and Greninja.

Rosalina, Pac-Man, Palutena (was in Brawl), Little Mac, Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Lucina, Mii Fighters, and Mega Man you don't get a pass on.

A ridiculous, sort of dumb stretch.

The PotDs have probably been planned for weeks and it's light on content because the 3DS game is coming out soon and the line between interesting, new content and stuff they want to hold back for the game's release is increasingly thin.
I wonder though. If they do plan them weeks in advance, they should have set up an automatic system that updates The POTD at a specific and consistent time.

Why does Pit appear twice?

We're talking about being recognizable. He's a major character in Pit's game and it's just a simple clone. He's not taken anybody's slot.

If you call yourself "well-versed" in Nintendo history, it's kind of a joke to look at the roster and say you don't know any of them.

I'd be more surprised about someone not knowing Greninja than Lucina.

I think that's only in Mirror Mode.

Ha!

Yeah it really is strange. Like just trying to think of ways for me personally, I just can't think of anything. Hindsight is not 20/20 to me in this instance.

Sakurai just shot himself in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Nintendo history (I'm an expert), but the Ice Climbers and Ridley are huge parts of it. It's not like it is with Sega where Sonic is all there is. If you screw a character over in Nintendo, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase Smash for either system, nor will they purchase any of Nintendo's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Sakurai has alienated an entire market with this move.

Sakurai, publicly apologize and cancel Smash for the 3DS or you can kiss your business goodbye.

I don't know that I really buy the "larger install base means inherently larger sales" thing. I've seen the same argument for DKCR actually being a failure.

Smash just sells pretty consistently, Brawl sold a bit better because it came out around the MKWii explosion but suffered longterm because of the Europe delay.

All I know is that the the Wii didn't attract many new Metroid fans, because Jesus those sales numbers didn't even clear Prime 1's with an install base four times larger. It's no wonder Nintendo killed the franchise.

I love you for posting this.

Brawl sold 12 million.

edit: I miss that "more"

Melee was so shiney and new I was just enamoured by it. I've never really been analytical of the mechanics so Brawl and Melee, dare I say, basically felt the same for me.

What did feel lacking in Brawl was single player content outside of SSE. Targets was simplified, classic was basic, events seemed like a breeze in comparison (but that could be my memory playing tricks on me). It was weird that Brawl, a game filled with content, had less motivation for me to play.

Also Brawl wasn't quite the same graphical leap so I couldn't be hooked even with such a shallow reason. I should also note I went from SNES to GCN so it was a pretty big leap.

I enjoyed Brawl but it never had quite the same play time as Melee. Also didn't help that the Wii was plugged into the family television. This isn't a problem that'll have with the WiiU version.

So this is why I'm happy with what I've seen for Smash 4. Smash Run looks fun, classic mode is tuned up, extra modes are new.

I'm pretty sure it's this, going off the way he says things.

Like how he says to make it competitive, he'd have to make the game fast and add loads of complicated controls.

Where the fuck does he even get that idea? Melee is held in high regard because it's the most interesting, exciting competitive smash, but it's not the be all, end all that he has to recreated 1:1 if he wants to make a smash bros. that can satisfy both audiences. Just because melee is the highest up competitive smash doesn't mean it's the top of what a competitive smash could be.

He also seems to have this really weird fear that a new player is going to play against Mew2king or Mang0 or something and hate the game because they couldn't win.

Gah. I can't wait to try out Smash!!! I'll make Shulk my character, if he plays as I think he does. Can't wait to hit training mode for a good hour, along with customizing my controls to have the button only as jump. C:

Not gonna lie, the roster could of been better, Dr. Mario seems relatively pointless and we're yet to see whether Dark Pit is a clone or not.

It could of been more varied

I really miss the individualized target tests, and I don't think they're returning... There was just something amazing about clearing that last one.

But we don't even know the full roster yet.

All-Stars was locked, and a talented lady like Mrs. Sakurai wouldn't leave the bottom of the roster screen looking like a mess.

At least Dr. Mario and Dark Pit are easily recognisable, which is apparently all that matters.

I reckon they'll be returning for the WiiU version.

Also Dr. Mario > Dark Pit.

Older character, represents an unrepped puzzle franchise, potentially the best smash version of Mario and has the potential for a unique moveset based on Dr. Mario games if they don't want to make him the 'classic smash' Mario.

Of course the roster could be better, but there's always going to a point where you have to say enough is enough.

If they kept trying to improve it the game would never come out.

However I feel we got a good batch of newcomers who all bring something unique to the table.

Yes and it is the whole reason the created Smash Brothers to begin with. He loves fighting games and playing competitively, but actually having a time-consuming job and trying to get into a competitive fighting-game just didn't work for him. So he tried to create a game, where you get much fast to the more interesting competitive part of a fighting game (knowing a character, reading your opponent, mind-games, etc.)
This is why he sees Melee as an failure of those original principles. L-Canceling, Wave Dashing and the Speed of Melee can be a barrier and stops player being on eye level from the start with the basic controls.

I expect a more feature explanation segment for Smash, but if I were to partake in Smash hype I'd rather want a character like Wario shown since he doesn't speak in Japanese and thus the trailer would be universal.
