The bolded is why I said they probably shouldn't do it at all if it's not going to be consistent across the cast. But I guess I sorta see why now they did it, I'm just the kind of person who wants consistency (plus I am very much used to how the previous games did it). It's not a big deal or anything, I was just curious about Gdorf so I guess now that I know I can stop questioning it lol.

They're a constant in the smash series.

Like nobody really gets excited or eager to see master hand, but if he was missing, something would feel wrong and off about it

I don't think that's the kind of info nintendo usually discloses to the press.

At best, it's newcomer info that nintendo isn't ready to reveal yet. At worst, it's old info that nintendo is waiting to write up a press release for, and then the press are allowed to write about impressions whenever it comes out.
 
My friend told me that a Japanese ad for Smash 3DS said that there's over 40 characters, is that true and if it is; does that mean it's time to cry for no Lucas? (because we're at 48 characters right now)

They could have easily implemented differing rosters without having the 3DS version contain fewer characters. For example, technically complex characters such as the Chorus Kids and Ice Climbers could have been exclusive to the Wii U, while, say, Dr. Mario and Lucas could have been exclusive to the 3DS version. Both could have had the same roster size, but slightly different characters. As a result, the 3DS version wouldn't have felt quantitatively inferior in terms of the roster size.

Such a move could have actually incentivized more customers to purchase both versions, similar to how certain Pokemon are exclusive to a given version.

Honestly, though, I don't really care that the Ice Climbers are cut - what vexes me is Sakurai's consistent employment of backwards logic.

You just suggested an idea that is even worse lol. You think people would like character exclusivity over parity? Speaking for yourself I guess, but it is easily a safe bet people would rather have parity over exclusivity.

And it is not the same as Pokemon. Pokemon allows you to trade, so you could get Pokemon not found on your version easily. This makes it so some characters aren't playable at all on the other version.

If you honestly can't see why they would go for roster parity, then it is pointless to discuss it.

But of course, Sakurai logic and whatnot.

My view on Ice Climbers is that there is a newcomer, Rosalina & Luma, who have the two character gimmick executed in a much better way. The way Ice Climbers does it isn't all that special outside of when you desync them. For the most part, it is just 2x the power. Even if Ice Climbers became a single character as "Ice Climber", they would still be unique. Just give them a buff and voila, you've got a capable unique fighter.

The 3DS stuff is still speculation, but I can see why people would see it that way.

OT, but does Corneria being in the 3DS version mean it isn't in the WiiU version?

Nobody knows, but considering the new starfox stage seems similar in style to corneria, I wouldn't count on it.

So far the only shared stages are FD, Battlefield, Mega man's, and the boxing ring.

That's stupid. Film journalists often count down embargos to the hour. Lots of reviews or impressions go up at midnight or 5:00 PM as a result.

But film embargos exist because negative reviews hurt the success of the film. So reviews are controlled and often not allowed to be published until a week or a few days before the film releases. This is different though, there's no way an hour with the game would be sufficient enough for a review and impressions on the game have been continuous since E3.

Why embargo everyone? Why hold a super secret press event and tell people not to talk about it yet? What could journalists be writing up during the embargo that would make a difference NOW as opposed to LATER?

It think it's likely Gaur Plains is joining that shared stage party as well based on what we've seen.

*shrug*, just spitballing ideas.

It'll hopefully just be to give the press time to go back and write it up so that no press have an unfair advantage (their news coming out first makes other websites get less hits, etc). Ideally it'll be monday or tue. If not, then it's tied to some sort of event or reveal.

Oh right, how could I forget. Still, a 'new' stage, and I'm calling battlefield/FD new because they're new graphically.

Could be stuff in the build that hasn't been announced including chars. And they're holding it now since it's at Pax and as such is a convenient time and place where many game journalists will already be. I don't think Nintendo usually has big embargoes when they host these themselves
 
Yeah I could see a embargo over features and characters.
That way when they're announced journalists can already write and tell their readers all about it.

Thanks for the reply. That would be a shame, as it is my favourite map for 4 players, it is big, but not flat - I really like it. Hopefully it will be, but I'll put my expectations in check!
Hopefully the new stage is almost identical.. I think it's the going in the opposite direction but hopefully other stuff with be similar.

I would think were going to end up seeing numerous "I was at PAX and this was what was embargoed" on 4chan by the end of the weekend.
 
I know I'm really late, but I just want to express how giddy I am for Shulk. That reveal trailer had me enthralled. Ughhhhhh I'm dying here and can't wait until Smash day!

Unfortunately, I still cannot open the eShop. I'm stuck at this prompt, which I think is asking for credit card info:
