Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

I would love Demise, but I never cared for Snake. Cuts are always a shame, but I'm most indifferent to his exclusion.

I actually never used Snake in Brawl. I kinda dabble with him in PM, but him just being there made the roster better for me (huge MGS fan). The variety he brought to the roster was unseen before in Smash.

I feel the same way with the Ice Climbers being cut. They're irreplaceable imo.

I never said that. I was just responding to the claim that he's the most iconic Nintendo character not in
Ah yes, fair enough.

There are several characters more "iconic" than Ridley that aren't in, I'd say.

I can dig that. I retained Ice Climbers in my 5 because they have a really unique fighting style. I really appreciate that sort of role a character can play.

Honestly more people probably recognize Dixie than Ridley. Of course it's all just conjecture but I wouldn't really say Ridley is that iconic.

I'd throw out a lifeline to these five characters:
Ridley
Lucas
Ice Climbers
Impa
(now new Zelda rep? Were they on Meth?)
Dixie Kong (no new DK rep? Were they on Bowser Jr. Meth?)

And then do a next wave of DLC:
Mewtwo
Squirtle
Ivysaur
Wolf

Krystal (so fans who somehow feel offended don't have to purchase her and people nothing against her can get a new staff-based moveset and check her off their roster list since before Brawl)

$15 DLC:
Alexandra Roivas (the purchase secretly funds Eternal Darkness HD and a sequel)

I watched the Shulk trailer, but does anyone have the 3DS trailer/video link that people were pulling GIFs from, like the Ganondorf icon?

Different strokes, but I find the roster thoroughly mediocre in terms of roster additions. Hell, between Melee and Brawl rosters, I've lost 2 characters I like to play and only gained 1.
Truth be told I only got one newcomer that I actually wanted, that being Little Mac, but I actually find him really disappointing aesthetically as a boxer myself, and I'm not fond of what his fighting style is shaping up to be. Though I think the roster is great and I got characters I never knew I wanted (Greninja, WFT and Bowser Jr.).

Just a shame about the lost veterans, especially Snake. That one hurts.

Ridley really isn't iconic at all beyond the niche of gaming enthusiasts in the west. I feel like we exist in this bubble so we don't realize that metroid is a B series in the west and far worse in Japan
This is why we need objectively iconic characters from A series like Palutena.

...No seriously, trying to argue Smash representation is objective and logical and based on how much characters "deserve" it Is just going to leave you in tears the moment you think about Donkey Kong.

Again, wasn't using that as an arguement against him being playable. Just against a claim another user made

It is my biggest WTF reaction from these games aside from the questionable cuts. The Wii U version better make up for it because I can't believe how much of a non-presence the series has here after the highly successful revival post-Brawl.

I suppose, if I am being entirely fair, I'm glad that Charizard is a solo character. I enjoyed him in Brawl, but hated swapping to his two lesser thirds. I could see myself maining any of the following characters on the roster right now:

Bowser (even with his aesthetic downgrades)
Ganondorf
Palutena
Charizard
Samus (if down+B is Melee-ized)

Ike was enjoyable in Brawl, but everyone above from Brawl sucked hard, so I had to compromise.

i absolutely don't mind characters getting cut if there are enough new ones (and there are). adding them later as DLC is obviously a good solution.

I didn't care much about IC, Lucas is a bit disappointing but we still have Ness and Wolf is just a bland character.

Ice Climbers, Lucas, Wolf, Chorus Men, Chibi Robo

Add those 5 and I'd be extremely satisfied with the roster, but I'm pretty happy with it as it is. Those cuts really suck though.

3 games, actually (there was a GBA game in Japan). /semantics

This is mine as well. I agree 1000%

You just have to accept that the Metroid series was never that popular. After 1994, all it got were two poorly-selling games over the course of 16 years, and only on handhelds at that. The revival on Wii was a good start, but it's going to be a while before the great momentum it built really starts to pay off.

Or in other words, the history of Metroid as per Smash Bros.

If you look at Japanese sales only it makes a lot more sense :P

(outside of Pokemon lol)

So the unlocks would be;

  • Bowser Jr.
  • Wario
  • Mr. Game & Watch
  • Ganondorf
  • Dark Pit
  • Lucina
  • Falco
  • Jigglypuff
  • Dunk Hunt
  • R.O.B.
  • Ness
  • Dr. Mario

?
Seems ok, I guess. I mean, it could just be the announced characters. Or the announced characters are the starting roster. I guess the latter makes more sense.

Who do you think will be the last unlockable?

I'm feeling Duck Hunt Dog or Mr. Game and Watch.

What worries me is that Sakurai probably wants to FINISH this game. He's been working so hard for so long and his health has suffered as a result. DLC would extend his involvement with the game longer and he probably isn't hugely interested in that. Possibly Namco could do it without him, but any content without Sakurai sounds unlikely to me.

Making stuff up is fun.

To call it speculation would be too kind.

Um.

The guy has calcific tendonitis in both of his arms.

He also hates sequels, which is what made him leave Kirby behind. This project was also announced before he even agreed to direct it.

So excuse me for "speculating" that after three years the physically compromised game director might be eager to finish his game. And excuse me for suggesting the company hired to develop the game might continue to develop the game post-release.

Are you just our new troll or something? I won't take any more of your bait regardless.

The character is probably more well known just by virtue of coming from DKC rather than Metroid.

However, Mewtwo is easily the most iconic "villain" that still isn't in the roster post-Melee.

Mewtwo is kind of hard to call a villain unless you go by the anime movie. He never does anything that bad in the games. He's just kind of there

Poor WFT and Dong, least popular amiibos.

Kinda surprised Samus is so high but hers also looks like the best detailed so it makes sense.

DKC was really, really popular

Although actually I guess Giovanni is probably more so, but unless he was pokemon trainer 2.0 which seems unlikely he probably will never get in
So you're telling me that a character thats been in 4 games is more Iconic than a villian, Ridley, thats appeared in every Metroid game but three?

Sorry, but I don't agree.

Definitely with you on Charizard. Not exactly fond of the character itself like I was as a kid, but I enjoyed the playstyle. Squirtle and Ivysaur never really did anything for me and I've always been one to enjoy large heavy characters, even though the only one I use in Smash is Donkey Kong. (And Snake, but he's not really large haha.) Personally really looking forward to use Zard without his, uh, "limitations".

Wario is really the only character I need. I'm just hoping they didn't change him here, but going by the trophy leak they kept him the same so I'm actually really glad about that. He's one of the two characters that I enjoyed immensely in Brawl and the reason why I play it a lot more than any other Smash game. It's too bad Snake is gone though since he's that other character.

That's why I put villain in quotation marks. I don't really consider him one, but he was treated like one in Melee and also grouped with Bowser and Ganondorf for event matches.

So you're telling me that a character thats been in 4 games is more Iconic than a villian, Ridley, thats appeared in every Metroid game but three?

Sorry, but I don't agree.

The original Donkey Kong Country roughly sold around half of what the entire Metroid series has sold to date.

Sorry, but I don't agree.

The number of appearances is only indirectly related to how iconic a character is. Being iconic means being well known and recognized. So the fact that far more people played DKC does make K Rool more iconic, even if he was in less games

Add 'Giovanni & Mewtwo', there you go pretty much a Pokemon villain rep.

Unless we could get Team Rocket. I'd pay an unreasonable amount of money to play as Jessie, James, and Meowth. Too bad they never add stuff from the anime.

Highly successful is a bit of an exaggeration. Kid Icarus Uprising sold over a million units, which is good, but not anywhere near the top 3DS sellers.

yeah, as I said earlier, Giovanni is probably the most iconic, he'd just be hard to incorporate into smash, especially with transformations gone. THough just pairing him up with mewtwo could work
