Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

Besides guest characters, Xenoblade is the first non-EAD/SPD IP introduced to Smash Bros. since Fire Emblem in 2001, so it's certainly "unique" in that sense. It stands out against Pikmin, WarioWare, Kid Icarus, Animal Crossing, Wii Fit, and so on.

Hmm, is that possible that what Sakurai referenced in his first comment in Shulk's POTD?

So I was thinking earlier about that whole "Smash Bros. 6" that popped up awhile ago. Especially after the new 3DS announcement.

What if there were some characters/stages they wanted to do, but the 3DS as is held them back. Smash Bros. 6 comes out next year for New 3DS as an exclusive- has some stages, characters like Ice Climbers come back and it's more or less an upgraded version of the game. Kind of like Super Street Fighter. They'll probably call it "Super Smash Bros. for New 3DS"

Wii U version gets similar content, but as DLC instead of a new game. Would this be a good thing or would you hate incremental upgrades for Smash?

Kid Icarus Uprising isn't overrepresented.

Now let's make two new Kid Icarus stages while leaving DK with Jungle Japes.

I just thought it's because I guess he's more "niche" than most characters.

Although I'd say Mother is as well, that at least has been around for quite awhile that it's built a strong cult following. Shulk's rather young, and his game...well, feels a bit different from the usual Nintendo fare. Probably why there's quite a few people who thought he'd be considered 3rd Party.

If you discount Xenosaga/Xenogears, Shulk is the youngest franchise in the entire game.
He's a one-off character from an RPG that is disproportionately popular in Japan that was created at a company not founded by Nintendo. He's also a brand new character. He's in some ways this game's Lucas.
Gotcha.

And I loved the Link and Marth tag team. Honestly, I was expecting Ness to pop out and help out Shulk.

I just read that Ash said on Twitter the embargo lifts on the 13th (the Japanese release) for the closed media event that just happened.

I go to check and lo and behold here it is: https://twitter.com/AshPaulsen/status/505543841542184960

So... whatever was in that media event will likely be irrelevant as we'll probably know everything before the 13th anyway (presuming some lucky Japanese guy gets an early copy). Personally, I'm betting it was in fact the near final build with the full roster and that's why it's embargoed until the 13th.

Don't forget the dozens of items and assists KI got while DK gets nothing. Even Metroid got a decent amount of assists.

Samus Amiibo looks so damn cool. Impressive.

Shulk looks awesome too. The model in the Wii U version looks incredible.

Many news today. I'll have to read a lot of pages to catch up... This week has been insane for Smash.

Super Smash Bros is supposed to be a once-per-console-generation event. A huge celebration of Nintendo and the history of video games.

Getting Capcom style 'Ultra Hyper Tournament Edition' installments would be weird and probably hurt the franchise.

The only people who should whine about Dark Pit are people who didn't play KI:U, and those people need to stop what they're doing and go play it
I played it. My memory's fuzzy... but I don't really get it. Why do people talk about it like Dark Pit was so special in it? The banter with him (and everyone in that game) was amusing, but what did he really do?

Actually, thinking more about it... I think it's much more so that I don't remember many details of the story at this point. Someone respoil the Dark Pit stuff for me.

Donkey Kong's item list is pathetic (the Hammer, known for being wielded by Mario, a Spring from Donkey Kong Jr., and a generic Banana Peel!) and we still have zero Donkey Kong Assist Trophies across both Brawl and this.

Don't forget the dozens of items and assists KI got while DK gets nothing. Even Metroid got a decent amount of assists.
Wario's also been dicked over; no character reveal yet, one new assist trophy (let's be serious, Waluigi doesn't count), and a reused 3DS stage.

It really is mind boggling how DK seems to be getting the shaft in pretty much every single regard (from what we know right now) despite Donkey Kong Country Returns coming out and completely reviving the series. :(

Yep. Pretty big bummer considering DKC is my favorite Nintendo series :(

You're a terrible person that's also very very wrong. Kid Icarus Uprising has some of the best English voice acting in any game ever.

But I do agree an option like Melee would be nice though.

I never played Uprising, I'll buy it tomorrow and see if my opinion changes. But overall I would much rather have the game in Japanese since it seems like characters are going to be talking a whole bunch during fights.

Never mind that Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D alone sold more than Uprising did.

It's kinda funny that they even bothered to embargo it at this point, when we most likely have all the important info anyway. But ah well, detailed impressions of the new characters will make the Japanese launch that much sweeter.

That's a bit of an understatement.

Ooh, that's smart! I could easily see them doing that. Maybe that listing popped up right when Nintendo showed Sakurai the new 3DS.

He went two games without adding a new Kirby character, Kirby got 1 new level in Brawl and it wasn't even for Kirby, it was Metaknight's level. Dedede still lacks any sort of familiar level based on him, Kirby only has a couple assist trophies, one of which is just a generic enemy.

I kind of cut him some slack with Kid Icarus, since he held back so many years with Kirby, which is far bigger of his baby than Kid Icarus.

Where is (are) the Chorus Men? I'm starting thinking that Sakurai cut it even before we get a chance to see it.

Like the Lucina vs Captain Falcon (and Robin) trailer which make clear that Chrom isn't in maybe Sakurai just give few character up cause of time?
I'm pretty sure if we get another character who wasn't already leaked, it'll be them.

i don't know if i'm late to the party, or if this info got buried couple pages ago but,

http://club2.nintendo.com/smash-promo/

SOUNDTRACK HYPE!

finally club nintendo gives us a soundtrack, too bad tropical freeze wasn't one of them
It's been posted like 5-6 times today. I don't fault you for not noticing, though; we've posted a good 2500 posts since last night, that's plenty of room for things to get buried.

I'm pretty excited to take advantage of it, seeing as my copies of both games are already pre-ordered and paid for.

Dunno if I'd call it my favorite but it's definitely up there for me too, Returns was even my favorite 2D platformer last gen. It pains me to see that the most we're getting from that game, as far as we know right now, is Gear Getaway as a song in the 3DS version. Bah.

The talking during the newcomer trailers is just for the sake of the trailers. They don't actually talk that much in game.

Actually, thinking more about it... I think it's much more so that I don't remember many details of the story at this point. Someone respoil the Dark Pit stuff for me.

He fought Pit a few times, helped defeat
Pandora, the Underworld Guardian and the Chaos Kin
and carried
Pit to the Reset Spring after his wings burnt up
. In terms of contributing to the plot, he was one of the more important characters in the game - far behind Palutena, Hades and Viridi, but slightly above Phosphora and Medusa.

That still doesn't really excuse how he's handled DK representation. Even Earthbound got's a couple items. The one item DKC had was cut in Brawl.

What can DK get as an item? Besides the removed Barrel Cannon?

A Banana is already an item, Diddy has the Jetpack as a move. I guess maybe a Rocket Barrel or a Minecart? A throwable Klaptrap?

One thing DK had in Brawl over most series was an absolutely stellar music selection.

We're talking about a game where you collect a shit ton of items. I could imagine a Balloon could be used as a recovery item, maybe the hearts from DKCR and Tropical Freeze as Heart Container reskins. Items aren't that important. I'm more surprised at the lack of assist trophies. Rambi would be fantastic.

DKC had some really nice stages in Melee and 64. And DK has the hammer, one of the cooler items.

But items are kinda whatever. I won't get much use out of them. I was really hoping we could get Dixie, Cranky, or K Rool.

To be fair, Donkey Kong isn't really an item-heavy series. All there really is is the various barrels, and none of them really seem like a good fit...unless Sakurai throws in the guns from DK64.

No Assist Trophy is a shame, but I haven't given up yet. We're still getting new Assist Trophies revealed like Nightmare and Ghirahim, so I think we might see a DK-one soon.

No new DKR3D Stage is weird. I mean, that seems like it'd be easy to do. Shocked Sakurai skipped that, yet apparently gave us an entirely new 3D rendered version of Magicant.

But I'm a bit miffed about Dixie. Seemed like such an easy choice for Sakurai...another female character, another DK newcomer, probably wouldn't be too hard to work off Diddy to make her, and apparently she was planned for Brawl at one point. And she's relevant again.

Just quoting myself to make an addendum.

It seems Ash deleted the tweet soooooo he probably wasn't supposed to say when it lifts. Someone must have told him lol. I assumed we weren't supposed to know but now we do! (I wish I had screencapped the tweet lol).

Ness would lack a stage otherwise.

On a similar note, I'm surprised that he's not bringing Onett back. It's not only a past stage, it's based on the game the playable Mother rep actually hails from.

But he could've easily used Fourside or Onett, like he did for DK, Star Fox, and Metroid.

Poor leaker.

He probably wasn't supposed to mention the event at all, considering he seems to be the only source we heard from about it. I hope we don't get him in trouble. :(

I kinda wonder why Nintendo would even have an event like that in the first place. Especially if the leak hadn't already happen, this would just make it that much more possible for something like it to get out. They can't share their impressions until the point where they'll have a copy of the game any way, and no way it was enough time to write a review or whatever.

Honestly, the worst part is the stages list. They shoulda added

1. Mario Tennis Court
2. Luigi's Mansion 2
3. Minecart Madness
4. Wario's Castle
5. Castle (Yoshi's Island)
6. Poké Floats
7. Hyrule/Lorule
8. Mt. Dedede
9. Battle Network
10. Macbeth
11. Flat Zone Gallery
12. Gyromite
13. Hogan's Alley
