The problem with Great Tiger is it'd be like if they skipped over Rosalina and Bowser Jr and chucked in Petey Piranha for the sake of being 'unique'.

Yeah, Great Tiger is certainly a Punchout character, but King Hippo is the most iconic, memorable one. Because he looks so weird.

so a PAX "leak" popped up on /v/

Not that I believe it, but I think the Hanafuda Card mention was pretty funny considering that it popped up on OricWindstar's poll the other day.
"Chorus Men"

Oh fakers, when will you learn that NoA reps would call them "Chorus Kids"?

Some people think the starter roster has been revealed.

I doubt it, as I don't think Luigi and Captain Falcon will be available from the start.
Yeah, Luigi is the one that sticks out like a sore thumb to me since Sakurai did imply he'd still be a secret character when he was revealed. Of course they could always change their minds on such matters but it's enough to make me uncertain.

They've got the big tunes covered already. But, I'm secretly hoping there might be a Super Punch-Out remix tossed in there somewhere too. A new version of SPO'S World Circuit music would be hype.

If the amount of Wii U music really is as large as they're saying it is, and no music is shared between stages that appear in both versions, I think we'll definitely see at least one track from Super Punch-Out.

Am I right in assuming Little Mac has his pink jumpsuit as an alt?

It'd be awesome beating the crap out of people with a hoodie up, all casual and the like.

I've been away for a couple of months and have only been taking in smash news in passing - can anyone link me to the point in discussion where the leak comes about? I wanna see reactions and meltdowns.

Also, if there's nothing else in the game, that's already a stellar roster. And IF there is more, well, Lordy.

That's a ridiculous statement. Great Tiger is notable - perhaps not as notable as King Hippo, but the equation of Petey to Rosalina and Jr. is completely ignoring his significance to the two Punch-Out!! games many people have played (Mike Tyson's and Wii), but also ignores the fact that Great Tiger predates King Hippo and has been in more games. He was a tough opponent, and quite frankly, he's a way more interesting fight than most characters in the entire series - King Hippo included. In the two (and only two) games King Hippo has been in, he's had basically only a small handful of attacks.

Chrom = King Hippo
Robin = Great Tiger

If King Hippo was playable, it would be for any reason besides "King Hippo brings something new to the table." How many characters aren't in for the fact that they do something interesting?

Bowser Jr. allows for an iconic group of characters to be playable, and introduces a vehicle-based character.
Rosalina & Luma is a new take on tandem characters.
Robin has aerial smashes and limited "ammo" for many of his attacks.
Little Mac has amazing ground attacks and poor aerials (did we determine whether any of his aerials are good besides maybe his Up B?).
Villager has his recovery, his Pocket, and his tree-cutting.
Palutena has a robust set of custom moves.
Mii Fighters are customization out the ass.
Wii Fit Trainer has a buff technique and works yoga and fitness into her moveset.
Shulk has mode changes.
Mega Man and Pac-Man both have a number of attacks that honour their history and legacy.

The only character that I can really say didn't get in for being a super unique concept (besides our clones) was Greninja, but even Greninja feels pretty newish. Sakurai seems pretty bent on making sure that as many characters contribute something fairly fresh to Smash.

Honestly, I'd be surprised if Soda Popinski made it in as a trophy. :P

...You know, it occurred to me, wouldn't he show up in the trophy leak? I mean, they can't be that worried about their history anymore, can they? So if Soda WAS a trophy - and he damn well should be (everyone that appears in Punch-Out!! for Wii, including
Donkey Kong
should, in fact), they would mention his original role as a drunk, which would have to be shown to the ESRB...

I'm really, really worried that Punch-Out!! might get screwed in the way of trophies. Why does Sakurai hate all things good in life?

This is a boxing game in which players compete in boxing matches against a cast of colorful, fictional characters. While players can use standard boxing moves (jabs, hooks, uppercuts), most fights are performed in a comical fashion with an assortment of 'dizzy stars,' 'cartoony' sound effects, and slapstick signature moves (e.g., growling, dropping shorts, conking oneself on the head, twirling, etc.). Boxers' faces show lumps and bruises after taking damage, and some knockouts are depicted in slow motion as players are sent flying across the canvass. One character flexes his pectoral and glute muscles prior to a fight, while another boxer belches during a cutscene.

This is the ESRB's description for the Wii Punch-Out game. I doubt the revised version of the character, where he only appears to be drunk, would need to be mentioned, especially if he's just a trophy. And I really don't think Punch-Out will have a dearth of trophies, considering the ease with which ripped models from the Wii game could be used.

*If you're in Japan

Are people forgetting we are mostly EU/US here or has literally everyone wasted money on a foreign 3DS to play 3 weeks earlier?
I don't concern myself with the.... people who don't have a Japanese 3DS. I admit my interest in getting one was piqued when I heard Smash was coming out earlier in Japan, but there are a lot of really interesting Japan-only titles on 3DS and it has an extensive virtual console. It is certainly worth the price.

And then Nintendo announced the New 3DS....

Surely that should be "I'm really feel it". The original meme was the result of bad english dropping the ing suffix in the first place ("That feel when" rather than "That feeling when")

I can only imagine the chaos of when this game is finally released.

I'll probably stand back and play a day or two by myself before coming back here and playing with SmashGAF.

It's going to be unorganised hell come Oct. 3rd.

I just pray online play works this time. It gives me confidence that we can spectate any randoms match in the world, so it has to be somewhat stablr.

Yeah, but this is Nintendo history :v it's very possible that Sakurai might make a nod to his history. Then again, it might be Nintendo policy to make Vodka Drunkenski their personal JonTron.

Also, if there indeed is a Punch-Out!! trophy shortage, I'm holding you personally accountable for no rational reason

Duck . all this punch out talk made me want to try pinch or which I bought but nope it was on the 3ds I don't know where it is

Ahhhhhh FML and I was thinking to myself that it's be impossible to lose something in an apartment this small. turns out no

Why does he have still have his collar? Why does he still have part of the the front of his jacket? What is this even attached to? Is it sewn on to his skin? That is a disgusting thought!

You can see the the fabric around it. He's wearing his collar as a collar - otherwise the scarf would just look out of place.

Smash 4 needs a Manly mode.

The drastic disparity in head sizes is kind of unsettling...

Goddammit.

Why doesn't Smash have a grappler yet? Ganondorf's side special is proof one could work and be fun to play. Kirby's throws are nice too.

Is anybody else worried that the soundtrack is going to be quantity over quality like how it was in Brawl? Overall, Melee is the better sounding game. Don't deny it.

Brawl's soundtrack is so much better than Melee's it's not even fair. Not that Melee's is bad (quite the contrary), but Brawl's outclasses it in every way. I mean, fuck, Brawl's soundtrack has most of Melee's within it plus a million more awesome songs on top of that. Come on. The idea that Melee has the better soundtrack is just part of the whole idiotic "everything Melee >>>> everything Brawl because reasons" argument IMO.

How are you all gonna pass time with the final month?

College for me.

Work, wedding planning and Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call for me!

I'm passing the time with...

1. Retro Game Challenge 2
2. Xenoblade Chronicles
3. Ace Attorney Investigations 2
4. Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
5. Theatrhythm: Curtain Call
6. Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair
7. The Walking Dead: A Telltale Games Series - Season 2

Goddammit.

That's why we need the Wrestler from Rhythm Heaven Fever!

It depends what you're looking for in the soundtrack.

Brawl: Breadth and variety but it's all midi and they padded it out with the original songs and music from the previous game.

Melee: Not much choice but what is there is of a much higher quality than what's in Brawl.

If Brawl was just 2-3 songs per stage but they were all orchestrated, It would be undeniably better, as it stands I keep switching between which one I like best.

Sometimes I like that Brawl has a massive selection, sometimes I like that Melee just has better quality per song.

Also Brawl is missing the Melee Fire Emblem theme if I remember right, that sucked.

I might have griped a bit about this, but Smash 4 has some crappy unlockable characters :v (relative to what were the unlockables of past games). I'm just... eh. The unlockables count drops from Brawl to Smash 4, fewer unlockable newcomers (only two are fully unique newcomers!), Wario relegated to unlockable status for no reason. Honestly, it's enough to make a man hope to no end that they finish off the unlockable roster with at least a Rhythm Heaven character... maybe Ridley? Dixie Kong? Eh?

EDIT: As far as Brawl OST vs. Melee OST, Brawl probably edges it out in overall quality... but so much of the songs are either duds, or songs I never listen to. There are so few songs in Melee that I have that kind of issue. As someone else also commented, the lack of any true orchestration really ruined a lot of songs, while Melee's smaller OST used brilliant orchestration. It's why Melee also has the better trophies than Brawl.
