Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

This is slightly off-topic, but damn the Wii U Deluxe Digital Promotion is a great program. I just discovered I have $15 in unused eShop vouchers, and part of what got me enough points to earn them was the free Pikmin 3 I got for registering Mario Kart 8 (they gave me the full price of the game in points!) and the free Dr. Luigi I got for my Club Nintendo Platinum award. It's like they want to give you stuff. Free Mega Man X3, here I come (with leftover credit to boot)!

Back on topic, I just watched all the Shulk trailers commentated by the various Xenoblade party members and they're all so great. So great.

Sakurai's reaction to Ridley

Using the unused Phazon Suit from Prime 1 would have provided more colour variation as well as being a reference. But it's expecting a little too much of the developers to reference that sort of content.

Not quite the only way...
Ah, I see what you were talking about.

Samus's recolors are pretty slick (Dark Suit is waaay better than Brawl's), especially Dark Samus, but 4 Prime themed colors this just make me more annoyed than ever that her model is based off of Other M...

I really just don't understand that one. Metroid Prime was the best selling and best received game in the series. There had been five Prime games prior to the release of Brawl, out of a total of 10. Only one non-Prime game was released after the first Prime, and it was a handheld remake of the original game. And yet despite all that, and yet Sakurai stuck with the Super Metroid design for a third time (one more time than that armor was featured in the actual Metroid series...), rather than going with a Prime-inspired armor. This time around though Samus got updated for the first time in the series, with a design only ever featured in one game, that was the eight best selling game in a series of 11 games (not counting Wii re-releases), and that was relatively poorly received. Sure. Ok.
I'm sorry, is there something wrong with this design?

I'm kinda envious about the whole Digital Deluxe promotion as I got the basic one from way back. I could have gotten a good amount of rebates from some of my digital downloads as well as the free digital game from MK8 if only my Wii U was the deluxe one.

YEEEEES!!

Oh damn, new music!

So Wrath of the Reset Bomb is an arrangement and not lifted straight from Uprising? Neat! Also, <3 Yuzo Koshiro. Sounds great!

I'm liking Theme from Area 6 / Missile Slipstream, too! This is definitely a better music update than Try, Try Again + Green Greens Ver. 2. :D

Nice, new music :)

There ya go, Sah.

It's always good to hear Area 6, but really, none of the new versions/remixes have sounded as good to me as the original N64 rendition. They're always a little overdone - too much orchestration, too many extra flourishes. The N64 version was already bombastic, so any attempt to make it sound even bigger just seems like too much.

Gah, that does suck. Really sorry to hear that. :(

It's always bugged me how broad Samus's shoulders are in her suit when she's shown as having quite a small frame in the Zero Suit.

I know this has nothing to do with the current argument and I agree the Other M design is amazeballs

Area 6 is fairly good, but the Reset Bomb piece falls flat. It can't match the dynamism of the orchestrated original - perhaps that recording should have been used as the direct base of the arrangement, instead of Koshiro redoing it with synths.

I don't know why, but I'm just not feeling the new tunes. They sound too... Same-y? They're all this really lighthearted orchestral stuff without any real stand-out bits. Green-Greens, Reset Bomb, and Area 6 are too similar, and it's a shame after the much more diverse and interesting tracks we got otherwise.

It's missing the shoulder ridges. I need the shoulder ridges.

Yuzo Koshiro is the only arranger consistently relying on orchestra so far. That's the kind of lustrous music I want to hear in the biggest celebration of gaming, not some Newgroundish midi remixes.

Can we not talk about this cause zero percent of samus' armor is realistic starting from her iconic shoulder pads

That's a silly argument. Samus' shoulder pads exist because Nintendo wanted to help make it more visually apparent that Samus changed armour in Metroid II. Why is Samus' armour almost as thin as she is?

There's quite a bit of armour there, and her actual shoulders don't take up much of that section of the suit.

I know why they exist dude, but the shoulder pads doesnt make sense with her humanoid body because our arms dont come down like that, im fine with the shoulder pads tho, I love them infact.

Woah it's up y'all

8 alt colors for everyone

"Pic of the day. Until now, you were only able to choose from four, or sometimes five or six colors for each character. This time, though, all characters have eight colors to choose from! The first four color schemes for Samus are based off her Varia Suit, Fusion Suit, Gravity Suit from Super Metroid, and the Dark Suit."

"…And here she is in the color schemes of the Gravity Suit from Metroid Prime, Green Samus (a regular in the Smash series), the Light Suit, and Dark Samus. A total of eight colors."
Looks so good.

See, I love the Newgroundish midi remixes. I like orchestra too, but none of the orchestral pieces have really wow'd me in the same way as Fountain of Dreams. The best is the Spirit Tracks one, and that's mainly because it does something different and interesting with the wind instruments.

EDIT: Forgot the multi-man melee theme, and it's a really good one.

I like that design but it's a step back from the Brawl one, wich was a mix between Prime and Super Metroid. I prefer a more robotic, 90's look.
The Brawl costume was 100% Zero mission/Super Metroid.

My point is,

Shoulder pads are like that because of visualization, and are still that way because they are cool

The slim design is impractical, and probably only in for fan service

I want my bulkier Samus, and one that focuses more on the cool stuff rather than the sleek stuff

If the last 10 seconds of the Green Greens sample are any indication, the rest of the track will incorporate much more of Hamauzu's distinct light synth elements, percussion and solo violin. Though I agree that the Reset Bomb piece and Area 6 are a little lacking.

It makes her look less like a walking weapon of mass destruction that regularly destroys planets and entire ecosystems.

It just looks less imposing and less alien because of it's smoother design to me.

It makes her look more agile which makes sense with how fast she moves and how high she jumps.

Dude, she looks like an impractical orange robot either way.

I just want the shoulder ridges.

Being agile and sleek doesn't have to come at the cost of not being bulky and intimidating. The Varia suit's design should reflect its power and speed equally.

Basically, this. A different cannon would be nice as well.

Yeah, it's a bummer, but I'm guessing that space constraints are the reason that we'll be hearing a lot of synth sounds on the 3DS soundtrack. With any luck, though, we'll get some fully orchestrated beauty in the Wii U version!

What about Claus?

Masked Man or bust! Just kidding--I suppose I would probably have to settle for a Claus-inspired recolor at this point. ;P
