Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

Some impressions:

Dreadhalls- fuck that.

Seriously though, fuck VR horror. That is definitely the best medium to scare people, you know, short of reality.

Tried Dreadhalls today.

I felt sweaty all over + clammy hands moments after starting. Felt tense just looking around and wanted nothing more than to take myself out of that experience, to put and end to it. I got to an open area and prompted to check my inventory for oil. As I did, I looked a bit forward and to the right, and a hooded ghost/skeleton thing appeared and screamed. I found myself shouting in fright while simultaneously smashing the Escape key and ripping the Rift off my head.

VR horror... I'm not sure how well this will do with the general public. It's much more intense than any scary movie or game, to such an extent that it's pretty unbearable and I could see someone fainting or catching chest pains. I actually gave the game a second try; even with this large creature plainly in front of me and full mental awareness that it was fake and a "harmless game," it took serious concentration to not lose my wits and abort the game.

you have to install the latest build (1339). Its no official release yet and its called unstable but it already works really well.

Wow !- just tried Doomsday with my DK2... It's a bit of a pain to set up but a great experience once you've got it running and make it through a level or two, find a dark corner, and listen to the music. I've beaten doom on dos, gba, xbox 360 and damn, this just got me into it like never before.

The lighting and level design hold up, and the default doomsday sprite filters actually look fine with the rifts low-ish resolution. Even though the sprite cards are a bit strange logically, the movement and action felt better than Quake 2 vr.

*anyways* I have to go to bed. But I want to keep playing Doom. It's like I'm 12 again :)

:lol

Yeah, horror games are almost PTSD inducing in VR. This is just the work of one amateur dev. Now imagine the next Silent Hill in VR...

While that's a terrible experience I can say I at least enjoyed reading your impressions of it!

Like you and I'd guess many others, my brain immeditely wants to nope out of certain situations like Dreadhalls, before it is even actively frightening. I do at least get a perverse sense of enjoyment from making others try it though!

Any chance we see outlast with dk2 support?

Someone on the oculus forums said the devs wanted to look at it after the console versions were done. I've tweeted them a few times but never got a response.
Doesn't look good for official support but I think it works with VorpX.

I got some money burning a hole in my pocket and after reading this thread and never having tried an Occulus EVER. I am more then sure that I want to buy the DK2. Can someone tell me if my PC specs can handle it before I purchase it?

16gigs of ram
GTX 680 4gig OC

Also, if I were to order this now by when do you think I would receive it?

You're specs are good for the moment. I have a xeon 1230v3, 8gb and 770 2gb. Have no problem at all.

As to when you will you receive one: It states on the order page
New orders are expected to begin shipping in October 2014.

You'll be fine for all the demos currently available. Who knows about retail games though.

Have most of the problems found within the DK2 software been fixed?

I am getting mine in September and hoping for an almost flawless experience aside from the hardware itself.

It doesn't sound that way to me yet -- as far as I am aware, direct mode still does not work well/at all on a lot of demos.

By "DK2 software" do you mean the entirety of things that have been created for the DK2, or something else? Either way, I wouldn't expect that to be the case, well, ever for the DK2 and likely ever for CV1. There are always going to be bumps and things that don't work quite right for people. Too much variation between everyone's setup, for one, and quite a bit of variation between the content being released as well.

All that said, it'll be great and you'll probably have a blast. It'll just require some tinkering with but even the most annoying of software doesn't require all that much to get working (in my experience).

Alright sounds like I will at least be able to enjoy it. Thanks for the info.

That's crazy, I have this exact same setup (but with 24 gb of RAM, got an 8 gig stick for free through a mistake). I haven't had any problems yet. The only thing I had an issue with was Elite Dangerous, but I turned everything to low (except textures, which are high) and it works great.

umm how do you get this to detect the rift, i have followed these steps...

1.Plug in Oculus Rift.
2. Launch Doomsday and a game. Doomsday should detect that you have the HMD connected and switch to Oculus Rift VR rendering mode.
3. Setting up gamepad bindings is recommended, including ones for game menu navigation (they are all in the Controls menu)
4. Click on Apply Rift Settings in the 3D & VR Settings dialog. This will configure things like HUD graphics size and head bobbing.
5. Reset your head tracking while standing up to fully match the pose of the Doom Guy.

I have my rift turned on and start domsday but dont see not option in the settings that refers to the OR at all, if i start a doom game then i just get the normal screen display. Any ideas on how to get this to work with the OR please?

Start a doom game.
Open the control panel in the menu.
Click on the gear in the lower right corner.
In the 3D & VR menu you can enable oculus rift.

Your rift has to be set to extended

Excellent, thanks!

EDIT: Is the away to alter the field of view, my gun is right at the very bottom of the screen and can hardly see it

Sounds awesome. Cannot wait!

Yeah, that's what I thought. I'm the type of person who loves watching scary movies past midnight on the big TV, lights off, sound system at a nice volume. This is unrelenting and so much worse. Awesome doesn't come to mind during or after playing.

Not sure if this will help, but if you go into Controls (in the DOOM menu, not the shell), there is a keybinding control for Reset Position (maybe named differently - can't remember) - anyways, bind that to a keyboard or gamepad button, sit like normal in your chair, press it, and see if that helps.

Haha, yeah, there's no way I'm gonna touch that game.

I think the only horror game I would be willing to try is Alien: Isolation if they ever do publicly release VR support for that. I'm not sure how long I would actually be able to handle it, though. I could barely handle being attacked by a megalodon in Ocean Rift!

Nah did appear to help in seeing the weapon im holding. Does this not happen for anyone else, where the weapon is so far towards the bottom of the screen that you cant see it

When I played last night, it was as if the gun was attached to my chin and a little too high up, even. I could see a row or two of pixels underneath the gun sprite.

I'm starting to think my computer just isn't good enough for VR. The only demos I've gotten to work without judder are Sightline, Ocean Rift, Lava Inc., Titans of Space, and Vanguard V. Everything else judders. Can't play Dreadhalls, can't play Euro Truck Simulator 2 on Low, can't even run JanusVR without judder. Half Life 2 works but not if I try to get it to 75fps.

I've got an Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz quad core processor overclocked to 3.33GHz, and 6GB of DDR3 1333MHz RAM. The graphics card is a Nvidia GTX 780 so I doubt that's the issue. Guessing either the RAM or the CPU is holding me back >.<

It's nothing to do with your system, the SDK and runtime just aren't there yet.

So everyone's juddering? I thought that was the case at first but then people have been flipping out over Euro Truck Simulator 2 on the dev forums and Dreadhalls here so I assumed people had it working fine.

A lot of people are, I don't know about "everyone". Lot of judder talk on the dev forums over at Oculus. Yeah, some people have better luck, but it doesn't seem hardware related in terms of power so much as potential driver issues and such. So it probably is specific to certain types of hardware, but only in their software, not that they're too "weak" to run it.

Dig through the dev forums, see if any of their tips and tricks will help on those titles you're having issues with.

ETS2 judders like crazy for me, and I'm hitting a solid 75fps

judder in some (most) demos, not as much in others. Quake VR for instance does not judder for me, but Half Life 2 has it pretty bad with head movement. supposedly making the Rift your prime display helps this, but i have not tested it specifically.

the only demo in which it's been so bad I had to stop was PolyWorld, but there's like zilch to do in that one so no big loss.

Wow, so I downloaded Virtual Desktop, which is pretty awesome on its own, makes using the rift way more convenient, but when I used it to launch Radial G and Dreadhalls they worked flawlessly (though the first door I opened in Dreadhalls lead into a giant pitch black room so I noped out of that one pretty quick). So not sure what black magic it pulled that did that, but that's a thing 0.o.

Also gave ETS2 another shot and just stopped moving my head around so much. Think I'm starting to get used to the judder, so its starting to get a bit more enjoyable (and I'm running it on High so it doesn't look bad either, judders as much on Low as it does High anyway lol).

My specs are lower than yours (i5, dual 760s) and I had little/no noticeable judder in:
Ocean Rift, Lava Inc., Titans of Space, Dreadhalls and Vanguard V (probably my favorite anything on the Rift).

Sightline gives me judder and have not tried ETS2, HL2, Quake.

Have you tried all the tricks to fix performance? My PC is close to yours and most games don't have judder but I had to do things like disable Aero to make that happen. Keep messing with settings and drivers; I suspect your PC is up to snuff.

Ah I noticed virtual desktop disabled Aero, maybe that's why stuff it suddenly working. Guess I'll look around for some more tricks like that.

After playing the Kokiri Forest and Star Hill demos, I'm dying for more stuff like that, just walking around taking in classic gaming settings. Imagine walking around the facility from Goldeneye, or Shadow Moses, or the streets of Silent Hill. I don't know if you can just rip them straight from the games, it certainly feels like Kokiri was.

Was on board until your last suggestion.

Just try wishing with all of your might that you could walk around Tallon IV or Aether, and realizing that until someone finds a way to export all of that crap (ALL of it), it'll never happen.

I wonder how big an issue this is actually going to be. I think a lot of people probably enjoy the thought of horror games in VR, but if it really is almost too scary, its gonna put developers off making these games, due to the potentially low sales.

Well your twin 760's do beat a 780, but its weird, because so many people are reporting judder even at solid framerates, especially with the head-tracking.

Definitely seems like something is going wrong somewhere that isn't 100% related to a person's specs or performance capability.

not strictly speaking, we were watching the OBS window on a 2nd monitor. if you do "monitor capture" instead of "game capture" it seems to work better.
Yeah I worked that out too. Monitor capture is working for every OR game, but the latency is just too high while using it.

Didn't you have any side effect like more latency or lower framerate?

Oh it definitely is possible. There are model viewers/rippers out there for all sorts of games, like Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, both N64 Zelda's, etc. Putting them into Unity or UE4 is trivial. But since this involves taking data directly from the game ROM, it's a copyright-infringing nightmare and I advise against it.

The Kokiri Forest demo looks directly ripped from OoT, but because it's so barebones (there aren't even NPCs in it), Nintendo probably doesn't care. If anyone released a rip of the entire game as a VR demo though, Nintendo would absolutely not be happy.

Even though I created Star Hill VR entirely from scratch, it's the last and only VR demo I'm doing based on Super Mario RPG. I don't want to give the impression I'm remaking the entire game, for same reason above. Even though it's not ripped content, it's still based on Nintendo's and Square's property, and I'm going to respect that.

We received one at the office here yesterday. I played with it a little bit and it's definitely a big improvement over the first one. Although the pixels are still a bit too visible, they don't stand out so much as in the DK1.

I tried a roller coaster demo where you have to lean forward to accelerate and that one was the first demo that actually made me a little uncomfortable. It was already cool on the DK1 but now it really felt intense. That was impressive to say the least.

Also tried the Matrix VR demo a little bit, although it's quite well made, the gameplay is a little lame. Of course, it's a tech demo so I'm sure better things will come out of it.

Anyone have any recommendations for must try/play demos that will really show the power of this thing?

IMO the best free are..

Live For Speed. - Gives you the feeling of being in a car
Titans of Space - nice sense of scale and a great experience
Cyber Space - my first go had my clutching my seat in terror
Urban Coaster - nice coaster running around a huge city scape

The Sightline: The Chair demo is great for quickly showing off VR.

Half Life 2 makes some people sick, but it was one of the most immersive complete game experiences for me on the Rift. just make sure to play with mouse/kb and not a gamepad.

The most fun I had playing a complete game on DK2 so far was actually Suwako-chan Cubic. But that might just be because I love shmups.

Sounds pretty great but we'd have to call it DC: The Motion Sickness to get away with it though.

HL2 I'll do when I have some more time, seems like a good reason to replay the whole thing. I'll try the other two soon though, they look neat!

Not surprised. No matter how many times I play Ocean Rift I still get uncomfortable exploring the depths with low visibility. Really looking forward to horror on VR!
