* Tingle: For better or worse, Tingle IS an icon. He's basically a meme, sure, but everyone knows who Tingle is simply because he's so detestable and bizarre, even more so than Waluigi. Why Sakurai has yet to capitalize on the ability to kick Tingle's ass to move millions of copies is, quite simply, a mystery.

* Balloon Fighter. Basically has had a minor cameo in every Smash since Melee (well, his series did), now to the point he's finally getting his own stage. Probably the most well-known NES character left besides Excitebiker. But his moveset doesn't really have much to it, and we've got Villager taking over his main characteristic.

* Dixie. Alongside Samus (who I imagine quite a few people didn't realize she was a girl), I'd consider her Nintendo's #1 Leading Lady. Plus, she's tied with DK for the most playable appearances in DKC (Diddy wins though).

* Meowth. Not in the games, where he hasn't enjoyed the same love as Pikachu, but in terms of the show, which I'd argue is on the same level as the games in terms of nostalgia, he's the only reoccurring Pokemon besides Pikachu to still be on the show. I'd love to see "Meowth's Party" materialize as a real game one day as well.

* Impa. At this point, I'd argue she's almost on the same level as Zelda's Big 3, and I wouldn't be surprised if SS/Hyrule Warriors contributes to her getting a larger role in Zelda U.

* Baby Mario. Not as his own character, but I still think having Baby Mario ride on Yoshi would be a great way to breath some new life into the character visually. And let's face it, Yoshi's most memorable appearance in his own series is with Baby Mario in tow.

* Barbara Bat. This is JP-centric, but she's one spunky female character I always thought would get into Smash one day---sadly, that never happened since NoA doesn't want to release her games over here for whatever reason. But isn't Band Brothers really big in Japan? Plus she had quite a few cameos in various games if I recall. Eh, maybe she's not iconic, but I certainly think she sticks out.

Toad, Ridley, and K. Rool, but just because EVERYONE has requested them and I don't have much to add.

I actually was thinking about that just now, mostly looking at the past though, not at more recent characters.
In my opinion, not really looking into sorting them:
Toad, Daisy, Dixie, Mewtwo, Ridley, Impa and/or Tingle.
Of course, every character who ever had been in Smash also is notable in their own right, so I'd say that especially Ice Climbers, but also Wolf, Lucas, Roy and the axed Pokemon are also iconic in their own right.


I think however, that from this point on, Sakurai will most likely almost entirely focus on the future rather than the past. I don't see many more "classic" characters coming in as DLC, or into a future installment, if any at all. Out of the Nintendo-owned newcomers, I'd only consider Little Mac and Duck Hunt as truly "classic" characters, with everybody else coming from newer games.
I know Palutena is an older character, but it's obviously her new design from Uprising, with her characterization from said game.
Bowser Jr. is sorta teetering on the edge here since he's sitting in the clown car, and (if the rumor is true) has the Koopalings as alts, which are what I'd consider classic, even though Jr. himself is a more recent character.

Edit: Forgot about Daisy.

Gogoat from Pokemon. You can ride on him the same way I'd imagine Rambi would work without having to design riding models for all the characters.

Yeah, I really found it strange because I was so sure that we are getting new Donkey Kong Representative due to three new games (DKCR, DKCR 3DS, and DKCR2)

I was so sure that Dixie Kong would be in the game, but I was so wrong. I think Dixie have potential to be amazing fighter with Bubble Gun and Hairs as weapons.

I guess they are going to save her for Next Gen Smash or DLC.
