It's obviously the multiplayer mode. It looks just like the vs mode icon in Brawl. I guess you're expected to play vs cpu's or using download play enough to make that option matter.

I'd assume it'd be the multiplayer versions of the solo modes, like co-op boss rush in Brawl extended to every minigame and Classic mode.
