Seriously. I love Speed Racer, but TToB is taking some impressions way too seriously.

Nah, although I should change my avatar to a clip from the movie just to be a total whore like the Dead Ledger Pole Smoker Club. Not to take anything away from Ledger's performance, without him TDK would have been a total snoozefest. :D

But really, at what point do you just fucking give up trolling something? Hell, even I've gotten mostly bored with that shit. Then again I'm an old coot. :D

Ok GAF, I saw it tonight... it was decent, but not great.

First of all, I have to give them some major props. I am a gigantic fan of Speed Racer, loved it as a kid, bought all the DVD's of the TV show and rewatched them. I avoided this assuming they were going to ruin it completely... they didnt.

They really did nail the charachters in this thing, and got a ton of stuff right. The evil corrupt teams run by the money hungry corporations and mobsters was pretty much the entire plotline of the TV show every other week.

They got Trixie in a helicopter, Sparkey being mostly useless, Spridle and Chim Chim saving the day by hiding in the trunk, they got the worlds fastest car in there, they got Racer X and Speeds night race in there to an extent.. they even got a veiled reference to the blatant sexism in the cartoon when Trixe was driving the car and speed thought it was too dangerous for her.

The cross country race really felt exactly like an episode of the cartoon, even down to stopping the race in the middle to have a shootout where the goodguys refuse to use guns and inspector detector shows up out of nowhere :lol

I thought most of the carfu was too confusing the follow, but there were some scenes where he would catapult another car into something and it was just bad ass.

My biggest problem was really with the style of the city scenes. I liked the style they used in the road race, but thought there was just too much shit going on in the city races visually.

I think my problem was it was a kids movie in a lot of ways, which obviously it was meant to be. I think it did a good job of it, so I'm not the audience this was necessarily aimed for.

Not everyone likes the movie. Get the fuck over it.

But you see by coming into the thread and trolling your actually defeating the point, you didn't like it don't come to the love in

Do you hang out with people you don't like? Didn't think so

It's why Begins was so bad.

Lame hero and lame villains.

I prefer my vigilantes sans kids gloves. The real world already has enough criminal protection, keep it out of my catharsis please.

I'll let the rest of GAF handle this, I'm too tired.

What the fuck, no one's expressed their newfound love for the film on this page yet.

Seriously, though, I'm really happy about how many people are learning the film was actually good over the past few pages. It's almost like the film was destined for failure-- even I barely dragged myself to see it in the first place. There's just something about it that seemed completely uninteresting in previews, etc., but once you actually do go see it you're blown away. The sad thing is, most people may never get over that initial hurdle and actually give it a try.

This thread is giving me hope, though. I just wish I had a Blu-ray player... I'm debating whether or not to even bother buying it on DVD. Wait, maybe I should just order it on HD PPV like someone else did in the thread!

Just finished watching this awesome awesome movie. Sure it's "cookie cutter" but the Wachowskis did a really good job translating and interpreting Speed Racer for today and the movie was really enjoyable. Seriously... the colors, the fucking colors. I was hooked. :D :D :D

I finally got to watch some of the blu-ray last night and I was completely floored by the quality. IMAX was a better experience, but this comes damn close. Phenomenal.

I have to say this though. THem casting the lead LOST guy wasa stroke of genius in so many ways. Really enjoyed him here - Wasn't so great in Vantage Point but here, he worked, looked the role and was quite all american hero. :) my bluray can't get here soon enough.

I dunno, why do half of your posts say something about TDK?

In this thread?

To scare off the Batfans, they're basically the GAF equivalent of that chubby douchebag pretending he was Batamangs in TDK IMO. Trust me, if I could throw their girlfriends (mother, or Real Doll) out a window I would. :P

So you have terrible taste, it's ok to admit.
you're definitely in the minority in the TDK hate.

Speed Racer is on the list to see, but I'm more than apprehensive about it.

Just because someone thought Speed Racer was shit, that doesn't mean they are in love with TDK. The two movies have nothing to do with eachother.

I just find it humorous that Iron Man fans are nowhere near as annoying as the Batfans, and honestly - it was IM that trounced Speed at to movies, so they have bragging rights.

IMO were it not for Ledger and Eckhart TDK would be as bad as BB.

Not to mention Kevin Conroy > Christian Bale, and he doesn't need a synthesized grindcore voice to get the job done.

I'm probably one of the biggest trolls around here, but I stated my piece in TDK thread and left it at that. I should be like a Batfan and go back and make claims as to which summer movie was superior ad nauseum. :P

Speed Racer makes me glad I finally have a blu-ray player. Jesus Christ this movie gets better with each viewing. I saw it twice in IMAX and its wonderful to have a home version available that looks stunning. Speed Racer is pure magic.

I was/am a huge fan of the original anime and I pretty much agree with everything you wrote. The Casa Cristo race felt like what the anime's racing was about (Death Race 2000 resemblance aside) and is still my favorite part of the movie as a Speed Racer fan. But the FZero style racing has grown on me quite a bit with repeated viewing. Especially after finding out that they were going for that childhood Hot Wheels playtime. So it was not so much a re imaging of Speed Racer there, but bringing another childhood memory of cars to life. Now I love those races.

Do you ever fucking read what you post?

So I sent an e-mail to Warner Bros at their digital copy site bitching about the missing iTunes copy, and I just received an e-mail with "Warner Brothers sent you an iTunes Gift" as the header. Looks like they're gifting copies of the movie via iTunes if you write in with your code!

Edit: And the code only works in the U.S. despite my being in Canada nooOOoOOo.

how do I email them?

I sent my first support claim on Tuesday and got the code this afternoon. Hopefully they manage to get me a Canadian code just as quickly!

i'll be the first to admit that i cried while watching this in hd. whether that's because my eyes were watering from how blisteringly razor sharp it is-- or simply happiness... that's up to you, dear reader

will post pics later

I wanted to rent the Blu-ray version to check it out, but there was only the DVD version, so I begrudgingly rented it.

I gotta say, this movie was greatly enjoyable, the critics seemed to over harshly dogpiled on this for some reason. I thought it was great. Crazy races and action with a super slick visual style and, despite being DVD, the colors...my god...the colors!

If this was just the DVD, my eyes is going to melt right off from the HD overload when I get my hands on the blu-ray edition.

wow, thank god for gaf I watched this film.

Totally awesome, brought out the kid in me. I can't believe this film bombed - but I guess that the obscurity of the cartoon and the lack of interest killed it.

It honestly deserved to do better than that turd indiana jones.

Batman Begins wasnt bad
It was really damn good and revitalized comic book movies as a genre.

It must have done a lot of things right.

Don't bother it's The Take Out Bandit.

More like don't make shit up, I seem to recall Spiderman being the big bank funnybook movie. BB just saved Batman from the Schumacher curse.

Not to mention Blade is totally neglected when people discuss the modern acceptance of the funnybook movie. Nevermind it kick started Marvel's serious movie offerings.

Ok, where do I sign up for the Speed Racer defense force? I picked it up on Blu-Ray today after reading a few of the HD reviews and was blown away. Seriously ... how could reviews be so backwards on this movie? Even my girlfriend who thought she was going to hate it ended up loving it.

Everything except that tubby kid though. He was horrible.

I just watched this movie and I really, really enjoyed it. The racing was exciting and frantic and my god the COLORS.

I never really watched a lot of the show so I dunno if it pee'd on it's memory but, from what I saw of the show, it seemed like they captured it pretty well.

Uh, I dunno about all that. There were a string of movies about that same time that had just as much to do with it. V for Vendetta came out about the same time and was pretty big and well received. It was more a cumulative effect of numerous pretty good comic based movies rather than one.

I picked up the Blu-Ray version, and I hope the Warner Bros. support sites comes through with an iTunes code for the digital copy, to use their words, "shortly." Otherwise I may have to find more, well...gray means of dumping this thing to my iPod.

Anyway, there's nothing to hate about this movie, even Spritle. :( I love this movie, I'm pretty much smiling from beginning to end. The story isn't deep, but the movie knows what it is, never takes itself too seriously and is just a damn fun ride. If you hate it you're dead inside.

Just saw this today (DVD, oh noez) and holy fucking shit that was just fucking awesome. I never really watched Speed Racer so I have no clue how faithful it was to any jibber jabber, but as a lifelong Wipeout fan, this movie hit all my buttons and then some. Just visually stunning and totally captured, probably better than any other movie ever, the sense of speed speed speed.

Five GoTekis Out Of Quirex.

Support site words, shortly?

Where is this info from?

I filled out a ticket with them, but haven't heard back.

Thanks.

The thing is, it's more faithful to the source than many films that are based on comics/games/anime. There are piles of nods to fans all over the place. Even the visual design is done in such a way to mimic the late 60's anime artistic style.

It's a shame so many people won't watch it because some talking head told them it's a bad movie.

Just rewatched it since catching on theaters months ago. Still SO awesome, hell, maybe even more so. I think I'll have to side with solo for once and put this movie above TDK for favorite movie of the year...then again that might change again when the TDK blu-ray hits. :P

Also...it's kinda sad how the chances of there being a sequel are almost non-existent. As long as studios keep throwing their monies at Wachowski-directed movies, I guess it's all good. :P

This might just be one of the stupidest movies I've ever seen.

Fucking fantastic visually, though. Can't remember being shocked by that much flashiness before in a movie. Mustwatch when intoxicated/high, imo. Big props to the Wachowski Brothers for the direction and style of the visuals.
