Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XV: Kübler-Ross Edition

So...we're thinking 60 characters? Is that what we're thinking?

Dear God, I hope so. Unlocking characters is my favorite part of Smash
Only those who are EXTREMELY optimistic think that. I think most of us believe it's either the 48/51 that we have now, or 53/56 after five more hidden characters are unlocked.

Speaking of Ridley...

Has anything been said about Samus's speed?

Something tells me she's still slow

Chibi Robo

Notable Appearences
Chibi-Robo! (2006)
Chibi-Robo!: Park Patrol (2007)
Okaeri! Chibi-Robo! Happy Richie Ōsōji! (2009)
Chibi Robo! Photo Finder (2013)

I've always been a big proponent of Chibi-Robo. A very unique moveset as well as headlining multiple games. In fact outside of Famicom/Advanced Wars is there a Nintendo franchise with more entries and no Smash representative?

Nintendogs have really only had two games and Pilot Wings like three.

Yeah, there's something magical about it for sure. I'll be happy if there's at least one stone left unturned by the time I boot it up.

I must say Oric that your pun game with these newcomers has been on point, good sir. Keep up the good work.

I know it's probably the leaker just messing with everyone, but I'm still curious why, when the leak initially dropped with that icon sheet, Mewtwo was the only one with a question mark instead of a cut symbol. So weird. If there's still at least one character in this game that we don't know about I'd bet everything on it being him.

I still think there is at least one character (Chorus Men) left.

Looking at that, why wouldn't they just move Shulk up one row, have a "complete" roster and a third-party row? That would be a "perfect" looking CSS. This isn't.

Also if Impa and Dixie are in, then Samus and ZSS move to the next room, giving room for Ridley!

It was so easy to surprise players back in 2001. You show them five question marks on the CSS, you give them ten.

Amazing. A+. No social media strategy required.

Now you give them 28 or however many to start with and they cry for your blood and also Krystal.

Yeah, that Sakurai took his sweet time confirming veterans and newcomers this time around (one per month was the average, if we were lucky, Direct aside) really made me appreciate just how MANY characters the game has. And that's not even counting the possibility of the leak being unfinished, or DLC down the road. It's insane to sit down and think that not only is the roster massive, but it's in addition to all of the modes, the stages, the trophies, the music...Smash, man. Nothing like it.

Who knows, who knows

Melee's CSS had an actual design though. The design of this CSS is entirely composed of character icons, so it's weird. In the Wii U CSS, the background has this moving orange background thing. This is just grey.

The 3DS screen is a lot smaller than a TV screen, though. There wouldn't be much room to fit a design around the edges, so they may have just left the background a solid gray. Besides, a more colorful background could clash with the different colored backgrounds of the character portraits. That wasn't an issue in previous games (or the Wii U version) because all the portraits had the same background.

But the boxes are not symmetrical, it look like this:
289618-super-smash-bros-brawl-wii-screenshot-the-character-selection.jpg

And this roster was incomplete, and this is exactly the same case in the leaked CSS.

?

That's totally symmetrical. Slice it down the middle, and each half will be the same. And yes, that roster is incomplete, but look at Melee's complete roster: it's the same basic shape.

You're overthinking it. King Kong is a giant ape, DK is a giant ape; Godzilla is a giant reptile, K. Rool is a giant reptile. They're two big dumb monsters duking it out. The actual lore of Godzilla vs. King Kong isn't relevant.

The problem is that Godzilla and King Kong only duked it out once. They're not rivals anywhere else other than that one movie.
It's like Sonic and Mario - sure, they're both platforming mascots of their respective companies who have competed against one another in the past, but making a comparison between K. Rool as Sonic and DK as Mario would be silly, wouldn't it?

Admittedly, it's a really silly comparison on my part. I've been guilty of them before. I'm not taking the lore for Kong and Zilla into account, though. I think honestly I'm just used to the idea of Apes and Reptiles fighting. I was a fan of the old rampage games and it had something similar.
Well King Kong and Zilla never fought!
Reptiles, for millennia, have been feared by man. That's why reptiles are often the villains in works of fiction. Apes vs. reptiles isn't exactly an uncommon concept.

The resemblance is uncanny.
;^P
I swear that exact same joke was made when someone posted the Twitter link yesterday.

I'm just hung up on the illogicality of the Clone Corner. Why? Why do that? Why would anybody decide that is a good layout? Even if Sakurai classifies Shulk as third party because he wasn't created internally at Nintendo, why would you have clones at the bottom right of the second row?

It's nonsensical and horrible. It's terrible.

Schedule of Ridley discussions:
September 13th: Well maybe he's a secret character
September 15th: Well maybe he's DLC with the Wii U version
Early October: Well maybe he's a cut character, let's datamine the game
November: Well maybe he's a secret character on the Wii U version
Mid December: Well maybe he's a cut character on the Wii U version, let's datamine the game
2015-2020: Well maybe he'll be DLC
2020: He's gotta be in this version of Smash, guys.

Man... 2020. That feels like the future from sci-fi movies. A bright Ridley future where anything is possible and size doesn't matter.

It's been confirmed that custom moves can be selected in the CSS, right?

In which case...why wouldn't the Mii Fighters have a slot there. The going theory was that they wouldn't appear there unless they had been fully customised...but that doesn't make much sense anymore.

My personal opinion: the CSS will no way look like that in its final state. There is enough space for at least 5 characters to fill the entire screen which will be the case. And no, no DLC characters, but some of which are unlockable. If this was the final screen, why not increase the size of each picture to fill the entire screen and ease the navigation? Why leave space there?

No idea how Nintendo decides to tackle that. Will they let us find out about them ourselves or will there be another CG trailer revealing at least one of them?

Whatever will happen: I'm certain that there will be additional 5 characters in the game. If DLC comes, then you might have to switch a page, use a sub-menu or something else to see the DLC characters. Why? Because I think Nintendo has a lot of plans what to do with Smash and will release more characters down the road that won't fit on the normal CSS screen.

The"Ridley is too big" argument doesn't make sense, nothing is to scale in Smash.
Ridley is just a terrible non-character. He's a purple (red? Green?) pterodactly with no personality.

It's more his proportions, he'd be really damn hard to scale down and still have natural-looking animations, while characters like Bowser and Ganondorf scale down really naturally.

This is also true. Unless the demo restricts the use of Miis, wich is possible, we haven't seen Mii Fighters in any form on the CSS. Are they unlockables? Are they even ON the CSS?

All we know now is that turning on Customization in the demo did not activate Miis.

I don't want to get too excited but the above argument above the Barbara trophy makes a lot of sense.

Besides, why would the video use different save files? Seems weird. Then again, it also seems weird to not show every character, even if ESRB rules don't explicitly ask for everything to be shown.

Still, it's better to believe the leaked roster is final and hope for DLC. That way, there's no disappointment.
