Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XV: Kübler-Ross Edition

Well, I sent SuperSah an avatar finally. GAF's suggestions are all good, but I couldn't pick just one so I went with something a bit more general. Hopefully you'll all see it soon.
Nice, can't wait to see what it is!

So anyway, what's the leak situation? Stores have games, but they're actually enforcing street dates?

Masked Man

I said wow
famitsu: 9/9/9/10

Same score as Melee. Awesome! :D

I made Sah a new avatar:

This is brilliant.

NEOGAF Leak Day predictions (Japan Time) - PM if you want to be on the list

Tuesday Leak (ends in 3 hours :p)
  • Makai (avatar bet, but must have his meat in it - not my words)
  • Zubz
Wednesday Leak
  • MaverickHunterash
  • Letterbomb (avatar bet)
  • TreIII
  • Pikma
  • Kinsei
  • Mariolee
Thursday Leak
  • georly (avatar bet)
  • munchie64 (avatar bet)
  • Captainbojanglesiii
  • SUPERJEM94
  • johnbone
  • NoctisXV (avatar bet)
  • NotLiquid
Friday Leak
  • Kensho

If you want to avatar bet for added fun, the rules are as follows:
  • Pick a day, japan time (right now, it's Tuesday ~9PM), so Tue, Wed, Thur, Fri - saturday is too late (It's out!!)
  • If the game leaks on your day, you win, and get to help in assigning avatars for everyone else.
  • If the game leaks and it's NOT your day (you choose Tue, it leaks Thur), then AS SOON AS IT LEAKS (not sooner, so if you choose tue, and it leaks thur, you don't lose until it leaks on thur), you lose your avatar.
  • If the game DOES NOT LEAK (releases sat) nobody wins or loses.
  • You wear the new avatar until ONE WEEK FROM THE LEAK DAY.

Reposting for the morning!

I'll have so much fun if I win.

Obviously 37/40 means the game is just as good or better than Melee since it's the same score.

I checked all Famitsu 40 and some 39 reviews and find it all bullshit.

You in for avatar bet still? I changed up the rules a bit

Do we have a start time for the Treehouse stream yet? I need to know if I should take Friday off or not...

I was wondering about a start time as well.

I asked a couple members of treehouse via twitter with absolutely no response. Must be one of those nintendo secrets.

My guess is 9AM pacific through 5PM pacific, but maybe they're coordinating with japanese launch, which would be 8AM pacific.

Mmmm I don't see the changes, but yeah I'm in, even if it means losing my new avatar.

I basically removed the avatar bet requirement, so people can just be on a list if they want to. Avatar bets are an added bonus :)

Ok, put you back on. If you win, then currently, you get to hand out 4 avatars for everyone :p

When the review thread happens for Smash 3DS, I hope people don't freak out if it get's a 7 or lower.

You can usually predict review scores for games based on trailers/demos/gameplay impressions, and I don't get a 7.0 vibe at all from smash. I'm sure some reviewer out there won't like it, and that's fine, but 7.0 will not be the norm, I don't think.

Oh okay keep us posted if you hear anything.

Who is making the review thread?

Heath is making the OT thread.

That said... isn't famitsu one of the few places in japan that does review scores for games? You never hear about other places doing reviews. A review thread for japanese version might be a bit pointless? Probably better to do a thread for reviews once US/EU review embargo is up.

I wouldn't be surprised if GameSpot slaps it with a 7.5 or something like this. Cons not enough checkpoints in classic mode or whatever.

Nah, 8. That is the score GameStop has given every major Nintendo game for a while barring Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze 6.0.

Are nintendo people that hard to hire? I feel like most of these places don't have a 'nintendo guy' on staff. I guess it's valid to see what an xbox/ps/pc fan thinks of nintendo games, but most of them are not the target audience anyway. I don't know how they operate or anything, so I'm just making an assumption, I guess.

Smash 3DS got 37/40?

Right, got my JP 3DS fully set-up now and put 6000 moneys on it and bought Kirby Fighters Z so I can get a feel for playing games in a foreign language.

Again my FC is 0748-4081-4360 if anyone wants to add me, PM me so that I know and keep in my mind that I'll only ever play 1v1 or 2v2, 3 stock no items online in friends only lobbies unless the game lets you do teams in for glory with online friends, in which I case I'll probably play a lot of that too.

E: First thing I managed to do in KFZ was end up on the eshop page for triple deluxe before I even got a chance to play it.

Review thread is separate from OT Thread so I'm fine with someone making one.

Yeah I think people nowadays confuse review scores with school grades.

I'd argue that in a world with hundreds of thousands of video games... being average or below average is a death sentence. People only have limited time and money, so why would you play anything average or below average when there are MORE than enough games ABOVE average.

That's the way I see it anyway.

No fun allowed! :( You're not even willing to TRY playing with items on? For funsies? I mean, i'm all for an occasional 1v1 no items, but no FFA, no items ever? Not even to humor me? There's no way i'll stand a chance unless I have something to help balance the game for me :p

No you're definitely right, that's the reason some people only buy 9's, but they still miss out on some amazing 70-80 averages.

Reviews for fighting games mean nothing.
Well when you say things like this, it raises the question - just what do review scores mean? Brawl may be a poorly designed and incompetently playtested piece of shit, but the simple fact remains that 95% of the audience still enjoys it anyway. Should review scores be reflective of the craftsmanship of the game, or the appeal? It's up to the interpretation of the reviewer, and every reviewer will be different. I would argue that review scores just mean nothing in general - you can't attach an arbitrary number to an experience.

The idea is that GameSpot likes to use the full range of scores that a perfect 10 affords, meaning 6.0 is indeed above average.

I love how generally everyone dismisses famitsu reviews but someone still brings them up every time.

They're still sort of significant - if a game doesn't get a 40, Famitsu doesn't consider it 'important to the future of the Japanese game industry'. It's just another piece of advertising, but it's a fairly prominent one.

"I couldn't figure out how to play the game and it didn't feel exactly like Rayman Legends, the absolute pinnacle of game design. I'm fucking stupid by the way" - 6/10 GameSpot

That would be too obvious even for their standard.

I think it'll be more like:

+ Same graphics on 3DS as on Wii back then
+ Controls work suprisingly nice considering game is on a handheld
+ Newcomers are a blast
+ New items and asisst trophies are great
+ Improved selction of multiplayer modes
+ Cool new game mode
+ Customization

- No Subspace Emissary
- No Event Mode
- No pre-rendered cutscenes

Score: 6/10

"We basically liked every change Nintendo made with this game but this 4 player multiplayer fighting game has slightly less singleplayer content (SSE!) and misses its cutscenes, which CLEARLY warrants taking off four points. Hopefully Nintendo learns blabla single player bla *CONCERN TROLLING*

I don't mind playing it once or twice if people really don't want to play it like that, but it's something I actively avoid if possible.

If I play with someone worse than me I normally balance the game by putting stock control on or changing it to teams and letting them have a cpu helper with team attack off, items usually stay off because with them on it just makes it even easier to win most of the time.

You might be better than me anyway, you never know.
