August 2014 NPD (U.S. Hardware) Predictions - Closes September 9th

Since it closes tomorrow will it include one day of Destiny sales, or does it close tonight at midnight technically the 9th?
NPD stopped tracking the August numbers on August the 30th. You can find more info in the OP.

I know that, for example, GAFfer jvm has written some great sales-related articles for Gamasutra, but he's just one knowledgeable person in a sea of ignorance.
That's an awfully kind comment, and I want to say that I really appreciate it. Thank you.

I think a site would do well to filter through GAF's sales threads and write up a "Best of GAF" summary. Bring in all the personalities, which are varied and entertaining in their own rights, and you'd have a good read, I think.

Or, a GAF Sales-Age podcast. Gold, I tell you.

That would be amazing. Absolutely brilliant idea. But who would host the podcast?

Are people that have access to box allowed to post it here or is that not allowed? (like everything)

"access to box"? I assume you mean "Have access to NPD reports"?

And technically individuals with access to NPD reports can freely post them here and won't be given trouble by neogaf's moderator staff directly however what would almost certainly happen very quickly would be NPD contacting neogaf's staff, request for the report to be taken down [post edited] and then NPD to seek damages against the individual who posted the NPD reports via breaking the NDA. Hence why it doesn't happen directly but through other means.

I bet Microsoft has contacted all the major retailers and determined that August sales are less than optimal.

So when NPD comes out with confirmed numbers...look forward to seeing more non-statements and deflection. And to think, Microsoft was once so diligent in boasting PR every month...

I love the sports analogies. now it's pre-season, before it was a marathon. I wonder what the next one will be in January. playoffs?

Ah, legal stuff. Sounds like too much trouble, no wonder no one does it.

I don't expect new 3DS to help much anyway.

also since Road mentioned it earlier, what were Nov/Dec 2004 numbers anyway?

November 2004:

PS2 - 696K

Xbox - 708K

Gamecube - 350K

December 2004:

PS2 - 990K

Xbox - 1038K

GameCube - 797K

Halo 2 was absolutely massive for the system.

Amazon US has been 100% accurate so far predicting the winner for the NPDs this console generation.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/2014-08/videogames?tag=viglink129408-20

# 5: Playstation 4
#11: Playstation 4 Destiny Bundle
#49: Xbox One Madden NFL 15 Bundle
#52: Xbox One
#74: Xbox One Limited Edition Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Bundle

It actually hasn't. There's been lots of months where XB1 is closer to PS4 than Amazon's numbers would make it seem and I think back in December the PS4 outpaced XB1 even though the XB1 outsold the PS4.

No one's using Amazon for numbers. In terms of ranking, yes it has been 100% accurate in predicting the lead current gen console each month.

His wording of "winners" indicates relative placement, not absolute comparisons.

As per December 2013, Amazon had XB1 at #4 and PS4 at #8 so it was even correct in placement for that month

I do imagine it will be incorrect eventually but it has been accurate in placement thus far

Whats the current consensus for this month?

It's been detailed prior but if you look here

http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/2014-08/videogames/?tag=viglink20241-20#1

Amazon has it

PS4 - 5th
Madden XB1 - 49th
KL XB1 - 52

No other XB1 SKU charted not counting pre-orders

It doesn't matter, it's the same answer :p

I've actually been meaning to ask others about September Amazon bestsellers

http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/2014-09/videogames/?tag=viglink20241-20#5

It says "Sorry, there are no past bestsellers available in this category."

Which it tends to say when the data hasn't been inputted/collected yet but I'm pretty sure it should have some of that by now. Wonder if there's a malfunction somewhere on September's data

I know the man has a job to do, but that is so full of shit its embarrassing.

I've noticed that they generally put up the monthly sales around the 10th of each month, probably in order to prevent seeing accurate day-by-day data until things can be lumped together.

I guess it's still time...

Here's my predictions
I'm way better at predicting the japanese market than the US one so far :p

[360] 57k
[3DS] 103k
[PS3] 29k
[PS4] 176k
[WIU] 74k
[XB1] 145k

Echoing Aquamarine's comments. Always good to have knowledgeable people writing the articles. :)

That said, bringing attention to GAF's Sales proclivity has usually not ended well in the past. Just saying! :lol

*sigh* I really wish the new 3DS was coming out this year. 3DS numbers are so boring/mediocre now.

Figure with the delay to 2015 for n3DS/XL, we'll see a price cut in regular 3DS this year to clear stock before the new iteration releases.

NPD releases in exactly two days. I'm quite excited for this month.

I wonder how many people on this forum remember what happened to GAF + NPD in late 2006.

I can't believe that people don't understand "access to box".

Look at your keyboard:
b -> n
o -> p
x -> d

Typed on a phone or tablet, in my estimation.

Wouldn't that be "access to bos", then? :P
Yes, the way it guesses words has messed with me plenty of times.
