I like how you ignored the entirety of the thread discussing that very point and how it was bullshit for them to detain her for not complying to show her ID. Also illegal. Come correct.

so its against the law to kiss your white husband if your black because you will be seen as a prostitute by the police... who knew miscegenation laws were back in effect.... smh

I don't think the lawyer literally meant to mean say absolutely nothing and come off as a mute.

I took it as meaning saying something like "I cannot speak to you until I have a lawyer present. Please allow me to contact a lawyer." Or something like that.

And if a cop then starts to insinuate you might be suspected of something, then assert the 5th amendment and of course still ask for a lawyer.

Then say nothing else until those demands are met.

To be fair, it's well known that only good looking black women are allowed to be prostitutes in LA.

Honest answer: I think we all knew why she was believed to be a prostitute, but the OP kind of wanted to drive the point home. It's possible it had nothing to do with a black woman kissing a white man. I mean, I'd like to think that in a city as cosmopolitan as LA people see that every day.But for the life of me I can't imagine any other reason they might suspect she was a prostitute.
From what I understand, someone called the cops on them
If anyone is racist, it's whoever called the cops on them

You LOVE that huh? I'd imagine you love it, LOVE it, because you think it means that something is different here? She isn't a prostitute, and there is no need for her to show an I.D. Since this is an issue quite a few here are familiar with, its more of the standard police abuse we are all familiar with.

Things are "worse" what the hell are you talking about? What makes it worse? the fact that a black woman had the police called on her, accusing her of being a prostitute (Or, possibly, the police didn't even get a call, since we have no report we will never know) Either situation is worse. There is nothing noble to be gained from chastising a citizen for not showing ID to a police officer, when she has no reason to, and its her right not to. That doesn't make anything better. This situation with police in america is bad, and its passed the point of using calm and understanding. Its crystal clear what the problem is in our country. Police aren't accountable to any legal systems, and they abuse their power.

Nothing about that is going to be made worse by feelings of bias and racism, that are frequently backed up by bias and racism by police. The only thing it makes worse, is arguments that have to absolve the police of any responsibility to our constitution. It makes it harder for those mental gymnasts to some how place blame on the citizens utilizing their rights.

The situation is clear. There is nothing that can make the situation with american police "worse" their actions are already leading to rights abuses, assaults, media attacks, self-protection, and murder. The only people this isn't clear for, are people who think there is a responsibility of a citizen to show an ID, when they don't have to.

You LOVE it..

Agreed, if we ignore this kind of racist stuff it'll go away. Ignoring the problem has worked for:

I did not say police should not be blamed as they handled the situation badly. What I am saying is that it is more likely that the caller had strong racial biases and police might(!) have acted similarly regardless of race. Someone informs them that there is prostitution going on in the vicinity, they arrive and ask for identification in order to check the local records and everything is done without any sort of nuance or discussion.

It is very humiliating to be cuffed in broad daylight, there is no need to do that to a female like her.

There are racists everywhere, but there should be zero tolerance on racist behaviors of on duty cops so when you say "the blame lies with the person who called it in the first place", that is completely untrue and an attempt to divert blame to an anonymous person.

The blame lies with the cops for reacting the way they did and not dismiss the call as bogus/something they cannot do anything about.

Not to mention the call is very likely a made up excuse from LAPD.

Do you really think this would have happened had she been white, or even if her and her husband's ethnicities were reversed?

If those cops had any common sense they would have dismissed the call once they went and visually verified the situation. They would probably just hungry for an easy collar and the shit back fired.

Seriously? How can you not see the racial implications in this situation? Also as others have pointed out the ID issue has been discussed at length in this thread, do keep up! Also, Daniele posted this on her Facebook page describing how the incident made her feel. I guess she's just fanning the race flame though right?

"As I was sitting in the back of the police car, I remembered the countless times my father came home frustrated or humiliated by the cops when he had done nothing wrong," wrote Watts. "I felt his shame, his anger, and my own feelings of frustration for existing in a world where I have allowed myself to believe that “authority figures” could control my BEING… my ability to BE!!!!!!!"

Along with the 'never kiss a hooker' thing, prostitutes in that area wouldn't be caught dead in those clothes. This isn't Flint, MI we're talking about. She looks like a model who just climbed out of the dumpster behind Goodwill - obviously an actress dressed for a role.

In my experience the only people who make posts like this AFTER a lengthy discussion going over this very point is made are racists because they have a knee jerk reaction about their attitudes being called out.

I don't think the "problem" that Friggz was referring to was "racism" per se. I think the problem was the opportunity for the officers to interpret a normally innocuous action as a flag for a criminal act.
You honestly think she would have been assumed to be a prostitute had she been white?

I am willing to take that minuscule chance

It's not a minuscule chance. Police know they can make unrelated busts if they can get people to talk and consent to a search. Again, this is a very common police tactic. That's what "juking the stats" means.

I wish you'd realize that people like you do nothing but fan the race flame and make things worse.

You're right, and we know. We know that things were much better for you when blacks didn't complain and they knew their place. There were no race riots (except the ones carried out by whites), blacks behaved in a kind and respectful manor, and they didn't compete with you for jobs. The thing is, it kinda sucked for us. Don't let the smiles you fool you, black people never like being forced into the back of the bus, only getting work as janitors and maids, being corralled by the police, and being denied good housing. So yea, we're going to make things worse. A lot worse. That's exactly what we want. We're going to fan the race flame until it burns down the institution of white supremacy once and for all. But don't worry, after it gets worse, it'll start to get a lot better - for everybody.

If that's true, then I give the cops a little more benefit of the doubt regarding racism. But the handcuffing is still too much.

something about the ordinary nature of the privilege of this post makes it an all-time L-taking for GAF. like somehow the banal idiocy of this after pages of discussion is even more baffling than upfront racism

Older post, but I wanted to answer:

How do they normally catch prostitutes without undercover officers? Like can they? What evidence do they have for that anyway unless they catch the act?

Cops ride around hotels and other areas prostitutes are known to frequent. They stop them, ask them for ID, and search them. Being unaware of their rights, the women present their identification and consent to a search. When the ID is run, prior charges for prostitution will come up. A search also usually turns up drugs. They then take the woman in for solicitation and/or possession. Whether the former charge sticks is subject to circumstance.

That's why there's nothing unusual about this incident - but for the victim's status. The way police behaved in this instance is entirely consistent with their standard operating procedure. Sometimes the woman is a prostitute. Sometimes, she's just a black woman being humiliated for going about her day.

This story gets my blood boiling. One good thing about the proliferation of camera phones and social media is that stories like this will no longer get swept under the carpet.

I find it disgusting that a woman of color can get detained just for kissing her husband/bf. That earlier story about a black man arrested outside a bank just for being there also really pissed me off.

It's just very upsetting and we need make sure that these injustices are not forgotten. One race of people in this country is treated as subhuman, and can be subjugated to the whims of the police at any notice. It's despicable and needs to stop.

He means that if prostitution were legal, there wouldn't be any reason for anyone to call the cops, because prostitution is legal.
And I mean some other excuse would have been used because racism.

Maybe not in this particular situation, but in general ... which is the underlying issue here.

Think of how many blacks (and latinos) are called for 'suspicious activity' where people wouldn't have batted an eyelash had the person been white or asian.

Considering some of the reactions in this thread and elsewhere a good number of the same people who wouldn't "bat an eye" would change tactics and just blame people for trying to make society worse like weekend_warrior.

One time this cop asked me for my ID. I told him I left it at home and gave him a fake name to write on his ticket.
That was the end of that. I live in Canada.

Exactly. Even if this was a case of prostitution, the solicitation part is already over, which means there's absolutely nothing the cop can legally do. People making excuse for these cops must be thinking they have the rights to stop people from going home to have sex.

Welp, she is pursuing a lawsuit. Apparently the cops cut her wrist too while handcuffing her.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/11095548/Django-Unchained-actress-claims-racist-police-mistook-her-for-prostitute.html

Some additional quotes from her husband (this article says boyfriend),

“This is something that happened to her and her father when she was 16. What an assumption to make!”

“So they handcuffed her and threw her roughly into the back of the cop car until they could figure out who she was. In the process of handcuffing her, they cut her wrist, which was truly not cool!

“Our freedom isn't freedom folks, when people can abuse others with no reason or evidence at all just because they "think" they have been given the power by people that are only equal to us.

“Of course, they had to let her go eventually cuz we weren't a threat to anyone.

Not cool at all. Apparently the hubbie/bf is a celeb too, a chef that goes by the name Chef Be*Live (real name Brian James Lucas). Hope something comes out of this in Watts' favor in the lawsuit.

At least the cop's identities are clearly shown in the photos. At least the force can't try and play "we don't know who the officers" were kind of games, since they're already playing the game of "there's no record of the incident". Why yes, there is, all praise cell phone cameras in the modern world.

I wonder what type of ID labels you as a prostitute?

'Oh, I'm sorry ma'am. I see you are an organ donor and Not a prostitute.'

previous offenses i would guess.

Truly horrible situation.

I wonder if they could sue whoever called the cops on them. Is there some law on 911 call center not giving their lawyers their number?

Guilty till proven innocent, apparently.

Edit: in regards to this id thing. You don't have to show a cop your id just because they ask you to. Your well within your rights to ignore their request, especially since they ain't charging your for anything.

I am willing to take that minuscule chance if I have information that might help catch the suspect quickly. And I hope most people on this forum would do the same, I know pretty much everyone in my local community would.

Perhaps in America you are better off hiding from law enforcement if you witness someone doing a hit'n'run or assaulting a female. It's better not to take any chances right?

You are right when it comes to some situations where you could be helping someone else.

However in this case, she did good by not showing the ID and it is "great" that she got arrested.

Her being a star means that this case wont be trivialized and it will get media attention it deserves.

First of all, you cant call cops on someone just because they are black and if you do that, you should be held responsible and get some kind of fine for frivolous call.

Second, cops should exercise common sense when they get a call like that and the "suspect" does not appear to be a prostitute in this case.

So while she would have been better off by showing her ID and getting it finished in 30 seconds, she did good because this is what other people go through on daily basis and if you are not a celebrity, nobody would care about your complaint.
