Final Thoughts: Tales of Vesperia and the future of next gen rpgs

Well, that settles it, I'll buy it as soon as I'm allowed to.
Fuck Namdai and fuck region locking.

Still wish it had dual audio, they could do it for ES after all :/

- Some weird game difficulty balance. The third boss is ridiculous in terms of difficulty. He will kill your party with like one attack REPEATEDLY on normal mode. I had to switch it to easy to beat that bastard. Seriously.

What boss was this? I played through on normal and don't remember anything like this.

Glad you like it, Himuro. I was dissapointed in the last sections of the game, but over all, an awesome game.

Edit: Also, like the new avatar. Thumbs up.

Great recap, thanks for that!

Bought the game but I'm currently playing FF4 with the gf and she wants to tackle one RPG at a time.

Lost Odyssey and this game are my next choices of RPGs. :D

I beat it on Sunday. I had some issues with it initially (and still do) but ultimately the awesome battle system took over and kept me in until the end. The story and characters are still pretty much generic anime crap, so enjoyment of that is based on your enjoyment of what it's pulling from. The AI is the absolute worst in a modern Tales game (Eternia and beyond). The game overstays its welcome with the third chapter and the number of side quests borders on ridiculous, ESPECIALLY considering how utterly retarded a good portion of them are setup, with obtuse triggers that require you going to past dungeons with no clues to just trigger the next part, many of which are missable. Team Symphonia desperately needs an editor to cut the fat on their titles.

The battle system, while still suffering greatly from limiting your primary movement to lines on a 3D field and giving you a single, almost useless attack while in free run mode (not to mention the problems with orienting yourself after free run), manages to be beyond awesome with the sheer variety of attacks, artes and skills each character gains. This alone makes every negative in the game bearable as, like previous games, it's just a sheer joy to run around and fight monsters.

You have to get all of the fell weapons. I went in expecting to bulldoze the last boss and got my ass owned hard.

I am with Himuro on this one. I loved this game and its awesome cast of characters. I've never played a Tales game before and bought it on a total whim.

I was also really pleasantly surprised by this game. The best compliment I can give it is that it's the first console JRPG I've played from start to finish since Shining Force II. I usually get bored of most battle systems half-way through.

You should do PR. Jokes aside, I have to agree. I was expecting Infinity Disco to blow this out of the water... man was I backwards.

I agree with a lot of what you said. Tales of Vesperia is the best RPG this generation among the current consoles and every future RPG will have to be compared to this. Truly an amazing game that deserves so much more in sales.

That is one awesome write up.

The ONLY thing preventing me from playing this is length. I loved Symphonia but barely had the time to finish it. I'm afraid this is one of those games I'm gonna get 15 hours into then never get back to it. We need more 20 hour RPG's.

Booooo.

Yep. Amazing game. My favourite RPG this gen too, and one of my top 5 JRPGs of all time.

Sounds like I'll have to pick this up eventually. Nice final thoughts.

I REALLY cant wait to finish this game, but im still waiting for that damn Jasper 360 T_T
But the little I already played was awesome

I really dont think he means that

gattuso the wolf in emhead hill

I'm playing through it myself right now, really enjoying it. This and Disgaea 3 are the first two really high quality JRPGs from this generation, so I'm glad the genre is starting to get the ball rolling, finally.

Just started up a couple days ago after finally bailing out on the travesty of boredom that is Infinite Undiscovery.

Like you, I typically hadn't been a fan of 3d "Action" RPGs, but this one's seriously got me hooked. I've put in like 14 hours in 3 days (as compared to 16 hours in almost an entire month with IU). Just can't stop playing.

Can't really say much definitively since I'm still so early, but this game has consistently impressed me at every turn thus far.

I really love the art direction and attention to detail. I keep finding my character just standing there, and realizing that I was doing nothing but looking at the scenery. Such a beautiful game.

Can't wait to play more. I agree that it's been the (positive) surprise of the year so far.

I really didn't like Tales Of Symphonia very much. They've improved considerably since my last experience with their studio.

Definitely the first truely great RPG I've played this gen.

No, Team Symphonia just needs to stop going after that mythical 60 hour RPG. They do it so consistently and pointlessly that I'm wondering if it is a demand from corporate.

Thanks for the final thoughts Himuro!

I agree with most of Himuro's points. ToV was awesome.

I was expecting IU to be rpg of the year, boy did I get that wrong. :lol

while I never thought it was gonna be RPG of the year or anything, I at least thought I would be able to finish it! :lol

...game got boring REAL FAST!

I enjoyed reading your thoughts about this game thanks. I've had the game since launch and while I haven't put as much time into it as I would've like to (5 hours), I cannot wait to plunge in head first as soon as possible.

I can agree with this. Although I like Tales of the Abyss just as much, this game provides a really strong cast of characters, and doesn't have retardedly long load times.

I only have minor gripes with it:

- Waitress game sucks compared to Abyss', which still sucked, so you can imagine the result
- Warehouse game is downright torture this time around compared to Abyss.
- Ba'ul flying minigame is like superman 64 lite

In other words, some of these sidequests make me sad =(

hey I enjoy it, how could you complain about getting MORE gameplay out of your $60 game?

becides just like in symphonia I am going to do every little sidequest, which means another couple hundred hours in this game too

I agree with most of your points and am really enjoying the game so far. About 30 hours in right now. The battle system is awesome, but the cast is what is really keeping me going. Especially after IU which had such a horrible cast, Yuri and his crew are a refreshing change.

Although I think your whole PS2 'polished' talking point is really silly. Sure there were a lot of polished PS2 RPGs but there were a TON more that were just shitty buggy POSs and some of them were even Tales games! Just seems like a case of selective memory IMO. It is just a matter of time as the systems age, as the latter PS2 RPGs are of course more polished than ones earlier in the generation.

Biggest problem with the game is the sound design. Next gen RPGs have complete shit in 5.1 implementation and Vesperia is no exception. They pretty much do random rivers/waterfalls/ocean sounds and then call it quits which is really annoying. Surprisingly enough IU has pretty much the best 5.1 implementation of any JRPG ever.

It can't be a demand from corporate, Team Destiny's games tend to cap off at 50 hours or so and that's INCLUDING doing side quests.

OP seems pretty dead on. this is my first tales game, and its the longest i've stuck with a jrpg in quite some time (picked it up about 2 weeks ago). i'm not really a fan of action jrpgs because i prefer to feel like the outcome of a battle was based on MY actions...not the actions of AI partners who i only helped level up.

this disconnect is still there in vesperia, but the battle system is so good it doesnt matter. being a huuuuge dmc (and dmc3) fan, i love crowdpleasing combat...and vesperia's got that in spades.

Great thoughts Himu, but after playing this game for abit now, I love it alot, but feel it doesn't add up to Tales of Symphonia's greatness. Could be cuz it was the 1st Tales game I played in 3-D after playing Tales of Phantasia for awhile, but overall great game, that easily ranks up in the Top 5 Tales games of all time, but we'll see after TOS: DONW is relelased where it ranks up again.

The waiter/waitress mini game is fine to me. Just use pen and paper for Raven and Rita's parts.

It was great because I got tons of cool costumes.

I just meant that it was long and less fun than TotA's (which was still bad). I got through it, and yes, the costumes are nice (you know these quests are all about the costumes).

And I actually made a spreadsheet on my laptop (which was on at the time) in the form of the menu. Then I input the order on there while I was playing. Still, it's kinda sad that Raven can't catch a break, even on a minigame.

Ah, okay. I forgot about that fight. Yeah, that was hard the first time, I got my first game over in that fight. Was that the battle where you got an achievement for knocking the boss against the plants that stunned it?

Other than Yuri and the enhanced battle system, I liked Tales of the Abyss more enjoyed the story more and the music in Abyss was way better.

Vesperia is the best Tales game, the best RPG on the three new systems, and would be the best RPG this year if not for Persona 4. Awesome game and you should have already bought it. It also has some of the best dialogue in an RPG since it is all snappy and entertaining, and this does help deal with the actual content of what they are saying.

My friend is playing this right now too, and he shares a lot of your same opinions on it... he says it makes him remember why he loves console RPGs, and there are some Ghibli-esque moments in the game, which is never a bad thing. I haven't played a Tales game since ToD on the PS1, but I might have to pick this up when I pick up Iron Man BRD.

Nooooo, I was blacking out this game because I don't have the time to play it. Now that I see how gorgeous and fun... ah well, what's an extra year of school.

I really love the art for this game. I've heard that if you've played one Tales game you've played them all though, which is why I haven't since Symphonia.

Best JRPG since Baten Kaitos: Origins, and I love the visual style, especially the way the characters move around when they're talking. I still see way too many talking heads.

The game is too long/poorly paced. The story doesn't pick up till about 15-20 hours in, now I'm at the 35 hour mark and I don't think I can finish it because it feels like it's dragging on. If the first story arc was 5 hours instead it would've been a much better game.

Well, thanks to this write up, the official Tales thread, and the amazing art of the game - I think I'm going to pick this game up this week to tide me over for the month of October before the onslaught of amazing releases hit.

Everyone keeps calling this an 'action' RPG. Can someone give me an idea of what the combat is like? Is this going to be like Kingdom Hearts or Dark Cloud (combat-wise)?

Having a long game is awesome. Having a long game that is artificially inflated is not. That said so far only Abyss has been truely awful in that regard (still love it though)

Perhaps Team Symphonia is just crazy then :lol

20 for a jrpg maybe cutting it a bit too short, you end up with a rush job like IU when this happens.
