Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

Almost every GPU thread the past year or so was filled with "Well I'm still happy with my 670, so I can wait" comments, me included.

It seems 670 owners can finally stop waiting. :)

Personally it was the price point that drew me in. I can sell my current one on ebay and probably get a little under half the cost of the new one back. The 700 series cards that would have been a noticeable upgrade for me were outrageously expensive, and seriously not even close to worth the cost.

That's my story at least lol.

Everytime I read a thread about graphics cards I remember my first high profile card purchase few years ago.

The Radeon 9700 Pro

That thing was a frikin beast

I have a GTX 580 and while it's been good to me, I feel that it's almost time to send it to that nice farm upstate. Should I pull the trigger?

For reference, I did a Haswell build last October but cannibalized my 580. i7 4770k, 32GB DDR3 1866 RAM, etc.

From a 580? Hell yes if you plan on playing upcoming PC games (Unity, Witcher 3, GTAV, etc).

Hmm I'm trying to decide whether or not to upgrade from a GTX 670 to a GTX 970/980. Will I get all of the power out of it in games with an i7 3770k? I can overclock the processor if need be (and the GTX 670). Not sure where we are at in processor power now a days.

The GTX 970 appears to be the best midrange high-end GPU on the market, now. A great time to upgrade for those sitting on GPUs from the 6XX series and under.

I'm happy with my OC'd GTX 770 (it reaches stock GTX 780 levels of performance), though.

I feel that those at the 7XX series should wait for the 22nm chipsets: the GTX 760 and up are well capable of handling 1080P/High-Ultra settings at the moment.

This is a "tock", and I'm waiting for the "tick".

I justify my 970 purchase by passing on my 760 to my girlfriend's new PC. <cough>. =)

my 560 ti SLI rig served me faithfully for years. i wasnt even really planning on upgrading but for the hell of it i put them up on Amazon to see if i could sell them. surprisingly enough they sold within a week. it has suched being GPU less for a month now but i'm really glad i sold them when i did because with the 970 now pushing prices of everything down there is no way i would have gotten 200 bucks for the pair now.

Well, I just pulled the trigger.

275 -> 580 -> 580 SLI -> Titan -> 980. In the holidays I'll buy another 980 and SLI it.

Has anyone moved from AMD Eyefinity to nVidia surround? Eyefinity has served me well over the years; unsure whether moving to nVidia means I will get a lower standard of multi-monitor usage...

Customs 970 seem the best buy.. but I was hoping for a little more, performance wise, while I'm very happy in terms of power consumption.
Now.. should I get it or not? How much until the first 20nm cards in your opinion?

yep that was my thinking as well. i value a quiet and cool running system and the Asus card just seemed the best call for that mindset

The Strix? I've seen a few benchmarks and it sits on 50°C in idle (because the fans are shut down)... I woulnd't call that cool. Sure, in game its very good though.

Will wait a couple weeks or so for some more custom cards to come/oc results to average before possibly stepping into the 900 camp. Would go with either 2 980's or 3 970's. My 680's have had a good run, but they are slowly dying from abuse :) .

Though, looking at the results for 2/3/4 way 980 SLI, I see 3-way 970's outperforming 2 980's by a noticable amount(assuming they scale the same as the 980s do). Roughly the same price, maybe cheaper for more perf. Looking forward to these results.

Definitely. I would sometimes think about getting a 780, but was really reluctant to spend $400+ for one. Then I would sometimes look at 290's, which were actually pretty good value, but not tempting enough for me to lose my willpower.

This card is a no-brainer, though.

I didn't notice that basically every non-reference 970/980 is overclocked by a lot over the stock frequencies.
Yea, these are overclocking machines. People are getting a fair bit more out of them still.

You know, I saw that, but then was looking at the MSI's idle temps(it has the same fan shut-off tech) and they weren't any worse than any other card.

The 970's benchmarks look phenomenal for the price. Very tempted to upgrade my 670 for it.

wowwww. that the 970 pretty handily beats the 780Ti across the board is pretty impressive since the 780Ti in Canada is a $650+ card. ill be watching.

edit: ok i did some quick reading. if the prices aren't absolute nonsense when they do the CDN conversion, ill pick up the Strix 970 or another similarly oc'd variant. upgrading from a 570.

Here's a 980 Windforce bench which shows the 980 outperforming the 970 Windforce. Weird.

I found the 980 Windforce on NewEgg... and it seems a decent bit more expensive than the EVGA version I grabbed. But the EVGA card has faster clocks.

EVGA (Core - 1241 MHz, Boost - 1342 MHz)

Gigabyte (Core - 1228 MHz, Boost - 1329 MHz)

So that EVGA card should perform about the same I'd guess.

That's the one I've got. The custom cooler on the G1 should technically let it overclock a bit higher if you have lots of space in your case and it's well ventilated, but I'm using a pretty small enclosure, so the "Titan blower" seemed like a better idea. Plus it was cheaper and immediately available.

I will try my best to post impressions tomorrow.

EVGA 970 ordered. Anyone know the difference between the single shield and double fan models? Newegg only had the double fan (not like the ref) so grabbed that.

Also picked up some Ripjaws Z. Believe it or not, I'm currently on 3x2gb & TRI-SLI GTX285. So long since I beefed up my machine. Hopefully my X58 classified will not throw a fit, but it's usually happy with it's stock volted I7 920 @ 4.0.

Haswell build in 2015 is next.

Good for me, because I'm not really into overclocking, and the G1 Gaming performs similarly to a stock 980. :lol

Well sure, when you're passively cooling the card 50°C it's good, but I would trade some quiteness for a lower idle temp. My 570 in idle sits at 37°C usually, and it's dead silent.
Do you have a link?

Also, I think, if you don't have a good air flow in your case, you might end up with higher temps than those.

I really wanted to pull the trigger on a 980 since Im still on 680's, but I am wondering if i should just wait it out until next year for the inevitable refresh/Ti editions etc..

The games I'm playing the most right now are Path of Exile, D3, and some CS:GO so I don't really need the graphics card power. At least until Witcher 3.

970 for $330 doesn't seem like a bad price at all. At least now that they've finally released the cards I can start building my PC, though I probably won't start until next year since they took so long.

Are there usually good deals on parts during Black Friday and that whole week?

My EVGA order just shipped, and will be here on Monday morning. However, they require a phone activation so keep that in mind. Customer service was great, no issues.

Yeah I love dealing with EVGA customer service, very nice and friendly. Some people might get a little ticked that they require phone activation, but I honestly see it as a great customer service tool.
