Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

So....go for 970 or 980?

970 is cheaper for sure, but the performance gap IS there between 970 vs 980, more so than these has been before.

Difference between 770 and 780 is bigger. 970 is just a slightly neutered 980. 770 is a different chip altogether from the 780.

But anyways, performance gap is there, but is an extra 10% performance worth spending 75% more money on?

If you plan on going SLI, worth noting that there's no good blower-style coolers for the 970. One of the reasons why I went 980. Not sure if they plan on coming out with a Titan-style cooler for the 970 later, but it doesn't look like it.

In my experience the open air coolers don't work as well in SLI because the bottom card heats up the top considerably, on average results in 10C higher temps.

Installing a side fan resulted in a temp difference of ~3° for me. That said the EVGA is blowing stuff out the back as well...

And that's why my Silverstone Raven RV02 case would be pretty good for SLI, even with the MSI cooler. One card should not heat the other one considerably because of the flipped motherboard.

That's why it's better to buy 2 970's and SLI them than buying a single 980

Wow EVGA have just pissed me off. I ordered the Superclocked ACX version last night from Newegg thinking I it was the ACX 2.0 they've been teasing and touting (even the NeweggTV unboxing video that shows off the 970 Superclocked is the ACX 2.0 version), but apparentkly no, its ACX 1 because for some reason EVGA decided that on top of the default nvidia cooler and ACX 2.0 versions in all flavors (SC, SSC and FTW) they also needed to put an ACX 1 version in all flavors (SC, SCC and FTW) and of course it doesn't look like the ACX 1 coolers from the 700 series instead they decided to make it look almost exactly like the ACX 2.0 version which is why I bought the wrong one. I'm sure I wasn't the only one.

/rant

I'm contemplating returning it once I get, since I won't even have to pay for shipping due to trying out Newegg Premier. But newegg doesn't even have the SC ACX 2.0 version at all (even though that's the one they show in their video), they only seem to have the SSC ACX 2.0 for $369. I kinda don't wanna pay $30-40 more. I could keep the ACX 1 version but TechPowerUp did a review of it and it's supposedly pretty noisy and my current 670 is dead silent so i don't know if I'll be able to deal with the noise.

Can someone link the twin frozr 970 please? I bought 2 evga 970s today but damn are they loud!
Edit: I'm looking to replace the evgas with something else. Which cards would be the quietest?

Yeah, I was wondering why people were buying EVGA after seeing how load they can get. Overrated brand imo, cards are nothing special at least these days. Get the MSI 970, according to reviews it's the quietest available under load while staying cooler than the rest and Xyber (look through his post history) has commented that he's very happy with the loudness as well.

So uhm, as someone who has no clue about this stuff and built his PC a few months back:
Right now I'm running a GTX 770. Everything looks great and runs smoothly on my TV in 60 FPS. I don't care about 120 FPS or 4K or stuff like that. I can just ignore the new cards for now, right?

Yes, you'll be fine with the 770 for the forseeable future.

how many of these features are locked to the 9 series? dsr is coming to kepler sure but what about the rest? surely vr sli is just driver based? not too bothered about mfaa, currently running 780sli with zero desire to upgrade (especially with these weak gains) but some of these features do sound sweet

I've been holding off on an upgrade as I wasn't happy with amd (drivers) or nvidia (overpriced) - 970 addresses both of those so I'm now a happy camper. Hopefully prices will drop a little further before Christmas.

970 it will be, then. I've read in this thread that those considering a SLI set up should go for a blower design. Is it really so much of a difference vs an aftermarket cooler?

I'm dumb.

So I held off on ordering one even though I could have, thinking my friend hadn't cashed the wedding check for $300 I gave him, when I found out by looking at my records he had 3 days after it over a month ago, so I had a free $300 I could have easily dropped.

I still can, but now with cards sold out not sure what's the best 970 I can grab that's still available. Bah!

It's a no brainer. GTX 970 offers a far greater bang for your buck. You get like a 10FPS gain for spending $200 more with the GTX 980 - seems a bit pointless to me.

Is the Gigabyte 970 really like 50% bigger than the EVGA cards? I don't mind paying $20 more if it's better, but it's a problem if it doesn't really, ya know, fit. :p

Or play games which aren't highly reaction based, like most PC games actually. Or, god forbid, do stuff other than play games (or read GAF) on the same monitor :P

Even for gaming, I choose my 1440p IPS screen + Plasma TV.

fwiiw, I bought a benq xl2420z two weeks ago and returned a week later. I can never go back to 1080p TN screens. Nice selection of inputs though.

Is in your opinion an upgrade from a r9 290 tri-x OC to GTX 980 worth it performance wise? Or should i just wait next year for 16nm? I'll be playing in 1080p till oculus i guess.

No. You need to neurotically upgrade every time a new component is released, otherwise you're not a true PC gamer.

Not at that price, no. Unless you can't stand your current card because of noise or something, just wait for the next cards.

If it's 50% larger than the other card I think we are all going to have an issue. I should have mine on Monday and will let you know. It's going in my HAF case so it better fit.

Edit - According to Gigabytes website the length of their card is 12.3 inches. The EVGA card is 9.5 inches.

Edit edit - Just measured my case. It will fit with some room to spare.

Well, there is a $20 difference between the two. It may seem like small change when you're spending north of $300, but a budget is a budget.

Saving $20 on a GPU, then spend a billion on all those games you will never have the time to play. ;)

Are these 970 cards as good as they will get in terms of clock speeds / features etc? Do new iterations ever appear a few months down the line; I assume that any new cards would be those with higher VRAM?

I have decided that my 670 has life in it at the resolution/framerate I want and it would not be worth the investment at this time. I hadn't contemplated changing it as it hasn't really struggled; I will reassess next year when this-gen only releases appear. I have no interest in upcoming Ubisoft games which are pointless trying to match hardware to any way so the rest of 2014 will be fine as far as I am concerned.

One thing that sucks about living in an area that you can't get mail delivered to your house and have to use a post office is that newegg steadfastly refuses to ship to PO Boxes. Ordered a new HDD from them this week, and because they sent it via UPS, no problem. Graphics card they want to send it via USPS, can't be done. Meh.

Finally got around to installing the EVGA GeForce GTX 970 Superclocked 4GB and sadly the reviews were correct. This thing is louder than my GTX 780 even under idle. As soon as Microcenter gets in a MSI favor this is going back.

The biggest attraction to EVGA for me is how good they look. Though I'd never base my purchasing decision off that. Though I do admit I'll miss the fat heatpipes coming from my Asus 670 on my Gigabyte 970.

What cooler is on your 780?

There will probably be a variant with more vRAM at some point, at $50-75 more than the 4GB models, but I wouldn't anticipate a 970Ti. There is room for one, pricing-wise, but not really performance-wise.

But who knows. For the price, it would be nearly impossible for me to feel buyer's remorse for the performance a standard 970 will come with.

Do 1440p monitors have decent scaling when fed 1080p or does the GPU do that for you? Considering a bump in size from 23" and need to decide 1080p or 1440p (wih a 970). Monitor will need to double up as a PS4 screen too though, and be used with my work laptop
I'd just disable scaling altogether, most monitors have the option (1:1, centered mode or something like that).

Why are most manufacturers using the reference design for the 980, but nobody is using it for the 970?

Because the reference design cooler on the 980 is a better cooler than the reference cooler on the 970 probably.

My 980s should arrive Wednesday afternoon from EVGA. I've ordered a replacement side fan (mine stopped working ages ago, but it wasn't a big deal) to help keep them cool, which I'm glad to see can make a pretty solid difference.

And then... my PC is ridiculously bottlenecked by my display until ROG Swifts get back in stock, which will hopefully not take too much longer.

Thanks to the people who have been giving out SLI advice here and in PMs to me. You've helped me feel like I made the right decision in doing 3 way SLI, in not waiting for none reference fans (since the defaults are blowers and that's the way to go for SLI) and getting me to replace my broken side fan finally.

I cannot believe my wife okayed all of these purchases. She doesn't just let me buy anything. A fullscale movie accurate pulse rifle from Aliens and a pinball table are both things she's shot down... but I'm not complaining given that she has zero problems with this excessive PC build.
