Abusing company info to hit on someone

This just happened to my friend and I wanted GAF's opinion. So yesterday he had ordered something from a store and when he went to pick it up the girl was awkwardly hitting on him. She was pretty cute but there were other staff around so he didn't take it any further.

Few hours after he leaves, he gets a text from the girl asking him out, saying she would never do this normally, this was a super exception etc. Presumably she got his number from the store. I'm not sure how I feel about this. People do crazy things when spurred by emotion and maybe this can be squeezed into the excused column. Of course it's easy to say "that's super creepy and inappropriate and she should be fired" but I wonder wonder how many GAFers would follow through if it happened to them with some cute girl?

Question of course only applies to a women getting a guy's information. Other way around would be an abhorrent rapist-in-waiting who should be arrested immediately.
 
Eh, I'd find it pretty flattering and don't see what the big deal would be. It'd be another thing entirely if she dug up his phone number so she could come to his house and tell him about the wonders of scientology or some shit.

Ethically pretty awful but it's up to him. If he had mutual flirty times that's cool but if not he can just tell her how he feels.

Happened to a friend of mine who ordered a DVD from a store and the dude who ordered it for her texted her with the details she gave.
She was weirded out but she could obviously take care of herself and shut it down pretty quickly.
 
You fucking kidding me? Cute girl makes the effort and your friend is questioning it? Wow. Who gives a shit? He should take it as a huge compliment.

Yeah, I do understand you OP, but I don't think it causes any harm in this case. If she's really interested, this might turn out ok. Your friend can see how that first meet-up goes. No obligations after that, right?

I also happen to work in retail and have done the same thing. Well, I looked up someone's name and added them on Facebook. It's not very professional, no, and I guess most companies prohibit this kind of behaviour, because of privacy and all. But, you know, if you don't have the balls or confidence to ask the person face to face it's a good alternative.

Seriously though, thats kinda creepy and kinda endearing. I wouldn't know what to feel at that point.

If an attractive person just wants your number, I'd say this is endearing and maybe even can be outgoing enough to show charisma.
 
Back in the days working clothing retail, I did this once. Cute girl, we were flirting while she was fitting new jeans, she decided on a pair but realized her wallet was in her car. We put it aside for her with her name & number. When she came back, i put the note with her name and number in my pocket, called her on my break, went out that night, had a great time.
 
Like many of these situations the line between romantic gesture and creepy stalker behaviour depends entirely on reciprocity

I honestly get the feeling society is getting to the point where if you express any kind of interest in a person you're somehow a creepy rapist. I just don't get it.
 
It's incredibly inappropriate, and I'd be very uncomfortable if it happened to me. I'd consider letting the store's management know.

Man that's fucking weird and invasive of her. If she was cute I'd still go out with her though. I'd just keep a dank ass, internal stank eye towards her for a while.
 
I have a weirder but similar story. A bunch of years ago, I got busted for a misdemeanor drug possession charge (just weed!) and while the lady cop was taking my details and processing me on the spot, we struck up a conversation about retro gaming because she was really into her NES and was sad that the internal connector had failed so I told her about how they sell refurbished ones and she was really excited to hear it.

After she had processed my case, she's legally obligated to send me her report by physical mail so I can protest in case I disagree and so on. Thing is, I don't think she's legally obligated to include a handwritten note with her phone number and a "call me any time :)"...

(I didn't call, it was just too bizarre. Also fuck the police.)

Well presumably you're supposed to just have the balls to ask them out in the store instead of creeping their info, though I get that's probably against most (all?) companies' rules (doubly so with all your colleagues watching haha)
 
It depends on a lot of things. If I was younger and still exploring my tastes sure I would go out with her if I already liked her in the first place.

At this point she would have to make a really good first impression that goes beyond small talk. I would most likely shut her down but not report it. If I can receive random phone calls from people I don't know I'm not going to care about someone calling me the first time after my phone number has been publicly available and simple enough to attach to my facebook image.

I would never use that information for personal reasons, its ethically wrong.
 
I'd be flattered. If I wasn't married, I'd definitely take her out for a drink. If she's that forward, I reckon we'd get on pretty well.

This is exactly it, regardless of gender. Should ask for the number in person rather than looking at the customer information database.

Report this to her superiors at once. Also your friend might want to lawyer up and consider a lawsuit against the owners of the store.

It shouldn't matter if she's 'hot', she's broken the law and if a member of my team ever did that I'd fire them on the spot.

I don't think it's creepy, although it can be abuse of confidential information. It'd become creepy when she starts showing up showing at his house

I actually know a girl that did this. While she came across to me as kind of desperate, her intentions were actually harmless. It's only that people don't WANT others to dig into their stuff like that. The guy she contacted was ind of freaked out.

It can be as harmless as a woman looking for the info of a man, and in all honesty the difference between this and going home using google is abysmal. But still... :D
 
I imagine if the store employee was male, this thread would have an entirely different tone. If I discovered one of my employees (male or female) doing this, they'd be fired on the spot.

This goes without saying.

I wouldn't approve of this if the genders were flipped and she still found the guy attractive; but I still would still act the same on whether or not it should be reported (it shouldn't).
