Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

Bottlenecks aren't an either/or thing, and exist on all parts for different reasons at different times.

Yes, your processor, due to the lower clock speed, is going to bottleneck you in certain games. But it already does no matter what video card you have.

Think of it like this, a lot of the stutters and slowdowns you might have in multiplayer games, strategy/RTS games, or anything with really heavy physics modeling will continue. But your average frame rate will increase otherwise.

Well, I just recently bought it, so now I regret it. Still didn't play any games on it as I was waiting for the Nvidia event before buying a GPU. I got a great deal on the i5 though, so it's no biggie, but I wish I had anticipated that the clock would be a problem. How many frames (on average) you figure I'll be giving up in comparison to a 4.00GHz CPU?

You can't really look at it like that. Here's some data from games I ran on a 3570K at various speeds to give you an idea.

GAF thread that might help you understand the info a bit more: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=512976

Hmm. I need to check the reviews again and see if the gigabyte 970 has a silent mode like the Asus and MSI cards. That could be a determining factor.

I caved...Ordered the MSI 970 from scanuk. Got lucky since its being delivered tomorrow. Still says out of stock on the site though.

Should be a big jump from a 570 right? (i5 2500k)

I need to know when this baby is coming to Japan:

My Gigabyte 970 arrived, this thing is whisper quiet with my case door off, with the door on I don't hear anything.

Time for some BF4 finally maxed out! :D

The reviews I read didn't mention it, but I could have missed something.

I was going over the thermals and noise section pretty heavily too. You would think that would be one of the advertised features and would be mentioned up front.

To be honest, I doubt the card would make any more noise than your case/CPU fans on idle anyways. The total noise introduced to the system is likely negligible anyways.

So what CPUs should be the minimum to drive these beauties at their fullest, without becoming a bottleneck?

Should probably just start with what CPU you have.

I'll send you one if you hook up some sweet sweet Abee cases.

:P

At a nice $200 higher price. Better off ordering from Amazon US.

Haha. You guys.... You are so funny. I think I will look into that sweeeeeet Abee case though.

On a serious note - I noticed that this is a DIRECTCU II and not the DIRECTCU II TOP like my 680. I know names are generally used as marketing ploys but for this case, could there be any truth to the fact that ASUS may release a superior 980 card very soon, or is this it? If memory serves me correctly, I believe there were two version of the 680, the 680 DIRECTCU II and the 680 DIRECTCU II TOP which is the more overclocked version. If this end up being the case for this 980 then I definitely want to wait for the DIRECTCU II TOP version if it is coming very soon.

is everyone who bough a 980 going to throw a custom cooler on there? And what is the difference between the reference 980s? is it just the warranty that each company gives you, because I'm about to cave for a Zotac 980.

Isn't a silent mode just a custom fan profile? Anyone can do that and have work exactly as they wish.

I just assumed you wouldn't be able to permanently shut off the fan under a fan profile for liability reasons. I could see someone easily frying their card due to a mistaken set up profile.

Honestly, I've been sleeping on the custom cooler replacement.
I would if I could

My Rosewill R5 Black has space for a GPU up to 12.5in(320mm) and the Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 will slide on in there at 12.3in(312mm).

Goodbye EVGA, hello Gigabyte!

Put in my preorder for the Asus 970 - seems like it's the only card in Canada that isn't jacked up in price for no reason or made by Zotac. And Asus has been good to me for the last two cards.

I'll have to wait a bit longer, and it's a slightly longer drive to NCIX than Canada Computers, but whatever. I'm just playing Wasteland 2 right now anyways and all the horsepower in the world won't stop it from looking like a 2003 game.

Yeah. That's the cheapest GTX 970 in Canada right now. I think I'll hold off my purchase

Wow, you aren't kidding. I just went to update my saved build on PC Part Picker and wow. The 980s are ridic atm.

Hope not. I mean, it's not THAT loud. Temps seem to be fine. Maybe I was just so used to the 570.

I've missed out on the majority of the conversation here.

Are you hearing a buzzing, whine, or almost a rubbing sound? You could have a faulty fan. I had one bad one when I recently ordered some fans from Amazon.

500 series are notoriously loud, I don't know whether you have a reference or non-reference 570.

Nope, no additional weird sounds or anything. It just seems to "hum" a little louder, is all.

Kinda random but has anyone tried their new setup with GTA IV or Dead Rising 3? What are the framerate numbers looking like?

GTA4... Is pretty much the same as before. The game is CPU bound and we might never see it at 60fps locked. That said, the game has aged incredibly well IMO and looks awesome in 4K. Half refresh rate in Nvidia control panel + maximum pre-rendered frames = 1 delivers at least a good 30fps. Also the only game I disabled SLI so far, there is just no use.

Dead Rising I already uninstalled (because it sucks) but somebody here said it's still dropping a lot of frames.

I did not test Crysis, but that game is also CPU bound in certain situations (AI tanks framerate...) so I will wait for G-Sync on that one. Might never be a locked 60 like the other two games above. Shit optimization is shit.

Hey guys I need some advice. I needed to shuffle some hard drives to make room for my gigabyte 970, but in so doing, because of the shape of my sata cables, I need to switch one from my regular hdd to my ssd and vice versa. It booted windows and all that and seems fine, but it gave me a "thanks for installing new hardware it successfully blah blah needs restart." Does this matter, or am I being paranoid for no reason? Im just worried this'll damage my ssd or PC somehow.

You're fine, anytime you switch where something is plugged in it will give that message but your hardware should still work. It does the same thing with USB devices.

I got my GTX 780 shipped internationally to Japan fom the US Amazon for almost $200 (20,000 yen) cheaper than the cheapest price on kakaku. But hey it's your money ;)
