Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

How important is it to test against a bunch of benchmark apps when overclocking? I noticed I can hold a higher clocks without problems in firestrike extreme vs something like the Heaven benchmark, where I start seeing random shapes and artifacts in certain scenes. Does this mean that Heaven puts more stress on the GPU?

It means your OC is too high.

It was a close call - but now everything is set:

R3 or R4 case?

Can you post some game benchmarks once you get it please? I also have a 21:9 Monitor and am thinking about getting a 970 in the next month or so. So far I couldn't find any benchmarks for that resolution and it would be nice to have some actual numbers instead of just estimations.
Which games would you like to see? :)

Posted in other thread already, but this gigabyte 970 is amazing. Almost silent and stays around 60C, even under full load. If anyone is on the fence, go for it. This card (and the other main brands I'm assuming) is a great buy.

That's great. Those are all 1080p right?

Yup.

I have a 570 so my gain will be even better. My 2500k is not overclocked though.

Until two years ago I had a 570 too and my 2500K wasn't OC'd yet.
Most important, I still have the results of some of those bench, so you can have a more direct idea of the gain you can expect:

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat Benchmark [DX11, 1920x1080, Maxed, AAx2]

Anybody have any recommendation on the DSR smoothness setting? I can't seem to tell the difference no matter what I set it to. I'm using it on a 1080p TV. Maybe it's like FXAA, where I'm sitting too far away to tell? In that case should I just throw it on max?

Lol. That's a tight fit. That card is so damn big.

It'll fit great in my 650D case (I have like 5 inches of clearance over my 10.5" card already). I do see you have some SATA connectors below the card? It fits well over them? I have SATA connectors on my MSI board in almost the exact same spot. My current card is just shy of being on top of them and it looks like a very narrow clearance if the card was as big as the Gigabyte.

Yep - no problem with the sata connectors - theres like 3mm space between them and the card - the connectors go sideways though (couldn't get a good photo).

I almost had a heartattack when the card came - I knew it would be big... just not that big :-D

R3 or R4 case?

For those of you overclocking in MSI afterburner...

What is the power limit for?
Do higher voltages get you more stable overclocks (similar to CPU overclocking)?

My 2 980's should be here in the next couple days.

Going to be a massive performance boost from my single 670.

Plan is to also get a ROG Swift to truly take advantage of them though, as a single 980 is already probably overkill for 1080p, let alone 2 (unless you're at 120hz+ of course)

You know what's better then getting a GTX970?

Getting one that's DOA. That fucking sucks. Never had that happen, just wouldn't turn on. Time to send it back.

Well, McHuj just somewhat brightened my day.

Sorry man, not being a dick, but shipping issues have prevented my cards arriving today, and I've had to scramble to get someone to be at the house tomorrow afternoon... presuming that's when my cards are arriving.

Still no ETA on UPS's tracking site, and apparently the cards arrived (but didn't depart yet) Philly this morning. Now, I've seen them fail to scan them on departure before, so I'm optimistic that all is on for tomorrow... but I can't be certain of anything because they won't let me.

Hopefully after wasting my wife's time today (since she couldn't unrequest her time off... pay roll for the week was sent in yesterday) I'm not going to waste a friends time tomorrow.

And I have the fun of complaining to EVGA to get my shipping refunded to look forwards to as well.

Hopefully none of the cards will be DOA!

Seriously, all of you with your cards already I hate you all. Doubly so if you have a ROG Swift.

That is all.

Keep the benchmarks and impressions coming.

And MSI is ordered. Now to figure out what to do with the 670.

I have two computers. My main gaming rig in the living room currently has a 4GB 770 I bought 5 months ago. I have another PC in a desk upstairs for M+K only games and actual work that has a Radeon 5850. So what I plan to do is move the 770 to the upstairs PC and retire the venerable 5850 from service. That way both computers have a semi-recent card in them. I've got a friend here at work I will just give the 5850 to. He's currently using my old 8800 GT so it will be a nice upgrade. I've always used a hand-me-down system for old PC parts since selling them seems like a pain.

Yesterday I was all "Hold.....! H....H...hold!!" but it didn't work. In for the MSI, god damn me. Going to try and offload these 2 670 FTW 4gbs to subsidize a 2nd 970 (and a bottle of rum to drink while I black flag @ 120hz). If I get killed during a shady craigslist transaction please delete my browser history.

edit: black flag is 60fps limited? THEN I WILL DRINK MORE RUM

Ignore the errors. One pops up because I need to replace the cmos battery on my motherboard, so the clock's wrong, and the other is the drivers for some reason. This is without overclocking the 970 Windforce myself.

Speaking of which, can anybody direct me somewhere to start overclocking the 970 Windforce?

Here are mine (Gigabyte GTX 670 2GB and then GTX 970 4GB), very impressed with this upgrade. :) I guess your I7 being much newer is giving you a boost. :)

New Nvidia driver from 9/23/14 isn't approved yet I guess....

I ran 3dmark earlier right before I left for work, I was getting 23247 on my SLI'd 970's for the Graphics score and 16k for the overall score. :) I do have a 5820k OC'd to 4.2GHz though.

Edit: That was stock, with no OC on the GPU's from me. Gigabyte 970's, they boost up to 1367MHz.

I have a 3770 and my single 980 gets....

That 970 SLI bench seems low.

What's the brand/model of your 980 if you don't mind my asking? My EVGA 980 SC scores 14613 in the graphics department of the same test. I haven't yet had much time to play with it, but for now I have the power set to 125%, temperature at 80C, +26 on the core, and no changes to the memory clock.

Trying to decide if I'm gonna pull the trigger on this ASUS 980. I was holding out for an MSI because I remembered my motherboard was MSI and the manual said that MSI products work better together, but then I figured that might be BS to encourage you to buy more products from MSI. :P

Not been paying attention to the gpu market for a while but yeah this is clearly a game changer. That 970 will be mine... oh yes it will be mine. Bye bye 6950!

I got my 970's clock speeds to 1463 MHz core and 3954 (does that double?) MHz memory and the temps were climbing to the mid-70s with 100% fan speed in the Tomb Raider benchmark. Is it ok to get to upwards of 80 degrees, and is there any problem with running the fan at 100% if the noise doesn't bother me? It's seriously really quiet compared to my 670.

Thought I'd add to the Firestrike fun by posting my results.

Seems alright, although this is the first time I've used this version of 3D Mark so I'm no expert.

Tonight was the first time I was able to play with my card and boy am I impressed. It just devastated every game I threw at it, best purchase I've made in a long long time.

So when it comes to playing with the voltage. What does increasing or decreasing that setting actually affect when it comes to the card itself? I can only guess that more power makes it better for OC. But if you want to correct coil while or fan noise, would you then reduce the voltage?

Use HDAo and not HBAO, HBAO is ugly as sin in FC3.

I expected HDAO to look even worse, thanks for the tip!

Dunno, this benchmark is weird from time to time...

Oh cool, did not expect the Gigabyte to fit into the R3!

So I ended up with the MSI 970 because Newegg got some stock and I live literally like two miles away from them, I just went to pick it up.

Experiencing something I havent experienced before. I opened up Halo 1 PC real quick to test the no-fan mode. I turned off VSYNC for what I assume would be like 2000fps and I experienced INTENSE coil whine.
I read online that this is normal sometimes when running a nondemanding game at like a million fps. Turning VSYNC on eliminated the problem.

I just want some personal confirmation. Is the coil whine normal when running something like that? It was really loud. I havent had a chance to test anything demanding yet because its a new computer and i dont have a lot of games installed yet.

what's your voltage for the 5820K at 4.2? every few days I'm getting something different, it's been increasing since I first OC'd mine.

I'm having a issue with the DSR feature for my 980. I tried it on two games - Diablo 3 and Dark Souls 2 I found the image to be blurry. I change the resolution to 3840x2160 in game if that helps. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. My native res is 1440p. Is this normal?

Right under DSR there's an option for smoothing which in other words is blur. Default is 33%.

Did you try to mess with the smoothness option in the Nvidia Control Panel?

That's about what I get with my overclocked 780, seems a bit low.
