Bayonetta 2 off to a slow start in Japan [Update: Week 2 sales]

I missed any mention of an attach rate in this thread, sorry for that. However, maybe the double of days won't double the sales, but it should make it close enough that the game couldn't be considered a failure when compared with the first one, especially the PS3 version.

The 360 sales of Bayonetta in Japan weren't good though so barely maybe almost getting to something under those sales with 40% more install base isn't somehow not a commercial failure

Not sure why it matters. The low sales don't make the game any less good. Platinum Games will continue to get work and Nintendo will continue to fund games for studios. For those that are thinking it would've been some huge hit on the other platforms, they tried that shit already. The weak sales there is the reason Nintendo had to save this game in the first place. I'm sure they went into this knowing that it wouldn't light up the sales charts. And despite that, the game EXISTS. AND it's packaged with the first game for one price. Whatever their goal was in publishing this game, I could give a damn. Good shit Nintendo, thank you for the charity.

A little off topic, but why is it the better tracker?

I've seen other people say mediacreate is the superior tracker (though in some cases people might be joking/trolling and saying whichever tracker makes their favorite system/game look better is superior...).

Nintendo uses Media Create for all of their Japanese sales tracking needs, so that's usually the main justification. Other companies like Capcom prefer Famitsu for public sales reporting to investors...but they tend to subscribe to both services.

The two both have their strengths.

On the one hand, Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Square Enix, Capcom, Konami, Bandai Namco, Sega, and Electronic Arts all subscribe to Media Create.

But on the other hand, Famitsu has a special partnership with NPD and GfK and is internationally recognised by multiple agencies as the standard for Japanese sales tracking.

In my opinion...

Famitsu tracks ~3,600 stores in Japan, and they have tracked the video game industry for a longer period than Media Create, so you have more sales data to compare. And, we have more Famitsu data on GAF that we can use in sales threads.

Like Famitsu, Media Create tracks >3,000 stores, and they do a good job tracking the industry, but in my opinion they're a little too optimistic at times...so I prefer Famitsu.

You can't go wrong with either tracker, though.

I'm not getting it...doesn't do a thing for me. Nintendo can't afford that with these niche titles, they've got to get broader appealing titles (aka the 3rd party stuff the other consoles are getting) on the Wii U and it's just not going to happen.

I'm fucking bummed for the Wii U, man. It's been a real clusterfuck. I'm not looking forward to anything til Zelda and Xenoblade X gets here. I gotta feeling Ninty is going to all but abandon it in 2015. I'm bummed.

*sigh*....
It would be intersting what other softwares would be releasing after super smash that will appeal to even much greater audiences.. (Zelda is probably 2016)

I like you.

This game is the only reason I'm buying a Wii U next month. As long as the game still gets released stateside, I won't worry myself about Japanese sales.

Maybe it's buried in the thread already, but if so, I missed it:

What do big console releases on non-Wii U systems pull in Japan these days? Based on every Media Create thread I've seen, it can't be much better.

This is kinda out of left field but let me know what you think of this theory:

Part of the reason why Platinum's games don't sell in Japan is because Japanese gamers detest the fact that gaijins/otaku love them so much. They don't want to be associated with that.

Any chance at all something like that could be true?

Not sure why it matters. The low sales don't make the game any less good.
of course it doesn't. who even mentioned that?
but the intricacies of marketing, exposure, sales and public reception is interesting to some especially when the game at hand is considered a quality product.
some of us are interested in more that 'i like this game and that's the end of it' in the working of our industry.

Bayonetta 2 was never going to light the charts or move hardware. But like the first one it'll be a love letter to anyone that likes fun video games. I'm sure Nintendo knew this.

Yea let us forget sales and just appreciate that we have Bayonetta 1&2 in a awesome little package on Wii U.

And apparently Bayo 2 is amazing

This is a fun thread.

Metal Gear Solid games sell really well in Japan.

PG/Clover sells nowhere though. In fact, MGR only was somewhat of a success in Japan iirc.

Yeah sure man, like a Fringe LSD overdose in a sensory deprivation chamber kinda alternate earth way, but I follow ya. :) I just happen to be one of those dirty gaijin otaku though :(
Look at the chart and ask you this question : Goliath (Samsh+Yokai) vs David (Bayonetta) who win ?
But,(David) Bayos got some pretty big rocks though...

Look at the chart and ask you this question : Goliath (Samsh+Yokai) vs David (Bayonetta) who win ?

Despite what people might say, Yokai Watch's main base actually is children so I don't think its actually fair to include it when talking about why Bayonetta sales are low. Before people cite pokemon's adult fans, they were fans as children and are now adults.

Then bigger question is, why the fuck does the Wii U, the successor to one of the most popular videogame consoles every made, have an install base in Japan that is lower than the Xbox 360, one of the worst selling videogame consoles in Japan.

PS4 selling even worse in japan. 3DS is successful and Vita bombed. Seems no one can predict the video games market there. And that is a good thing.

That's because those crazy Japanese have abandoned consoles.

I don't understand that. Are their houses so small now that a console can't fit?

I'm not sure why some people think Nintendo is going to abandon Wii U in 2015. Nintendo's already announced that it is releasing at least 8 games for next year (not counting Fatal Frame 5, Devil's Third, Fire Emblem X SMT, or eShop titles such as Mario vs. DK). It's probably safe to say that 2015 will probably have the best software lineup for both halves of the year compared to 2013 and 2014.

They didn't make this game to sell to the public. They made this game to sell to Nintendo.. which they did. So mission accomplished.

Amen, brother.

Bayo 2 is one of maybe 5 announced games that lead me to get a Wii U in the first place, so the value of the game goes beyond what can be seen by base sales numbers.

I thought people knew this game was going to do terribly, and were just happy that they were getting it in the first place? Personally, I think PG deserves an applause. They've outdone themselves. One only needs to remember TW101 to know that this is an upward trajectory.

I'm sure Scalebound will continue that trajectory and be a better worldwide seller than both Bombanetta 2 and the superhero wannabes. On the Age of One however.

I don't understand that. Are their houses so small now that a console can't fit?

What's too small might be their tolerance to buy expensive machines that don't offer you anything. The last big release on Wiiu was Mario Kart in May. Before that some other (not very spectacular) Mario game in 2013. PS4 has even less, I'm baffled it's successful anywhere.

I like it when people pretend sales don't matter. Yes, a game's quality is the most important thing but products need to make money otherwise people stop making them. When Nintendo ponies up the cash to pay for this and it sells no copies and attracts no buyers to the Wii U, the chances of them doing similar things in the future goes down.

So yeah, Bayo 2 is probably going to be fun as shit either way but to pretend sales aren't a thing is shortsighted at best and intellectually dishonest at worst.

I don't understand how you came to this conclusion based on the pic you posted. Where does he say or insinuate that it doesn't matter?

Platinum Games will continue to get work and Nintendo will continue to fund games for studios.

I'm sure the latter will be true, but I can't see how many more bombs Platinum can have and still get access to the funding they need to make the games they want. People have every right to worry about their sales numbers in light of that, especially if (like me) they enjoy the studios' output.

Indeed. Indeed.

Lol, stealth begging has evolved to stealth celebration, shame that Edge perfect score ruined the party to some.
