Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

I think it was worth it but you can probably hold out a bit and wait if you want to. I'm VERY pleased with the performance upgrade.

Maybe try one of the new games that are coming out (Shadow of Modor) on the 680 and then check here for people running it with a 970/980 and see what the difference is.

Edit - I personally wouldn't upgrade to the 980 over the 970. I'd save the money and eventually go 970 SLI down the road.

You could sell your 680 and almost cover half the price. I'd go for it

Thanks, guys.

So people aren't really finding the 980 to be worth the extra $200 then? Haven't really kept up with this thread.

I cannot wait until the 8gig 970s are released and we get to see benchmarks side by side. I would be utterly shocked if its anything more than a subtle performance improvement on majority of games - especially at 1080p.

Of course; there is presently no game that requires more than 4GB of VRAM at 1080p. The performance difference would only present itself outside what could be considered standard variance in extreme scenarios like running Watch Dogs at 8k.

It won't be. It'll just allow for extreme settings that eat up VRAM like that texture pack.

It's not going to magically make the game's entire engine 10 times more powerful and beautiful, but people are going to keep panicking.

I think more people bought the 970s now because you could get the non-reference design. The 980 non-reference cards haven't been released yet.

If you have/want to spend the money then get a 980. You won't be disappointed. I'm sure you'll be as pleased with the 970 too if you go that route.

I decided to wait for the 8GB versions, assuming they exist. I want something future proof and I can't rule out the possibility of me moving to resolutions higher than 1080p.

I do want an upgrade before DA3 so hopefully we hear something before then

Unless you want/need the best of the best, probably not, no.

And if you do want/need the best performance, two 970's only cost about $100 more than a 980 and get you a whole hell of a lot more performance, providing a pretty damn attractive alternative use of that money.

I was thinking along these lines as well. But said screw it because 8gb versions will most definitely be out of my price range and therefore, I've settled with a 970 now. Sure it may bite me in the ass in a few months time...

At the expense of having to deal with SLI issues which can be a pain.

Test run ,not scoring as high as I should, I need to format but im waiting for my x99 parts to get in, getting massive throttling as my case is for water cooling and has zero air flow. 4gb vram is way too low as im running out of ram way before gpu power at 4k.

A 300$+ amount is not cheap. The 970/980 are great GPUs no doubt, but its getting "compromised" by the lower VRAM.
So how much are you willing to pay for an 8gb card? And what is your list of gains for that cost?

These cards are running at pretty high resolution now... The only indication of loss is extreme examples at this point. Not running stable frame-rates at higher resolutions.

x-post from pc thread.

No Gigabye, MSI or Asus GTX970 cards on Amazon.co.uk?? I just got paid and want to do something stupid but I want to buy from Amazon ;_;

I saw someone on another forum say they got the new Borderlands game with the 970 when they ordered it from Amazon, has anyone else that got their cards from there got it or is he full of crap?

I'm not really sure the best way to use Dynamic Super Resolution. Should I be using it with anti-aliasing, or as a replacement? Or as a mixture of both, such as using DSR with multisampling as a replacement for supersampling?

Depends on how good the games AA solutions are. If it's DX9, usually foring SGSSAA with Inspector is the better choice, but if it's DX11, DSR would probably be best.

Ugh, my 970 arrived this morning (1 AM) at the local UPS facility but I have to wait until late Monday for it to be delivered.

This is all one needs to know on VRAM. Those clamoring for 6 and especially 8GB appear to be confused by console marketing. Or, just confused in general.

So, I got $400 for building somebody else's computer. I originally was going to charge $200 but the person decided to give me another $200. So, I went and got a MSI 970 OC at microcenter. Even though my existing card was a 670, the cooler temps and the performance increase are amazing. I also sold my 670 for $100 so I'm doing good.

Fucking hell. You've proper mugged them off.

Waah, I would be pushing it charging someone 100 bucks for building a PC. Heck, I would do it for free since I enjoy putting a PC together. :P

What did you do to get that much money just for building someones computer?

Magic. Nah, the person I built for has money and didn't want to deal with the hassle of finding good computer parts and building the computer. My standard labor rate is $100/hr, and I figured all things total $200 bucks would cover time spent finding parts (since I generally know what's good at the time that takes no time and labor would basically cover building the computer, testing, and packaging). The extra $200 is for any support needs for the first 3 months.

Edit: I should say the cost of my labor is small-time compared to the budget they gave me for the PC. It was basically build the best computer for a $3000 budget.

Shadows of Mordor saying it wants 6GB VRAM for Ultra is making everyone shit their pants on VRAM amounts.
I know it's overblown but I see the consumer pressure to add more memory to these GPUs as a good thing. You can't have too much VRAM. It's either enough, or not enough, and no one wants to replace a great performing GPU a few years from now because of memory constraints.

So using the new downsampling method I've put CS:GO to 4K and it does look good, but the mouse feels wrong, like it requires more movement to move the gun than it usually would? Anyone else experienced something like this with downsampling?

Never underestimate how much people will pay you for IT solutions to their problems. It's why I love this field of work, simple fixes for 95% of the problems for great pay.

I must have bad luck, most of the time people come to me for their computer problems and want me to fix it for free

only people who do that to me are family members. i put a stop to that by charging $25 if they even veer into trying to get me to diagnose some computer issue. Im not a charity. it's not that I care about the money. it just filters out the small issues that I could not care less about dealing with. i like my free time.

lol... ok.

It wants 6GB of VRAM for it's downloadable texture pack, yes. Not necessarily 'it wants 6GB for ultra." Even then it's a bit grey as to how much is really needed at 1080p because the 6GB may also be including supersampling.

Fuck newegg. I'm never ordering anything from them again. I have a new, unopened 970 Gigabyte G1 that I want to RMA and they are trying to charge me a $55 dollar restocking fee.

Decided I'm either going to order the ASUS Strix 970 or the MSI Gaming G4 970 when I get paid on Tuesday and then my PC I built earlier this month will finally be viable as a Gaming PC!

I just hope someone has them available on Tuesday. :( It seems both Amazon and Newegg are sold out of anything other than the EVGAs, which I definitely don't want.

There's a local Tigerdirect by me, not sure if they'd have any 970s in stock yet though. Anyone had success with 970s at TD retail locations?
