"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

My 360 got the service center really fast. It only took a bit more than a day.

Anyway, how long do they usually take to repair/replace it?

Uh... nevermind. I just got an email saying they received my console (though they got it a few hours ago) and I clicked to check the status and it says it's repaired and they're sending it back.

I'm really impressed with the service. I hope they actually fixed it though :P

Well they're good at cycling the boxes (they should be considering the fiasco thus far) but I wouldn't hope too much, if they're sending you a first gen refurb you'll likely end up sending it back soon.
They need to get those new boards (opus?) in the refurb chain asap.

Btw... how much did they take? 2 days?

Sob, seeing Falcons die already and Elites as well dropping like flies it's scaring me off my planned Gears 2 Arcade 360 buy, but then PS3 is much more expensive, I don't care for Bluray playback since I'll end up using and HTPC for that and even talkin' exclusives the X360's ones appeal more to me... what to do, damn!

Just buy a 360. If it dies you can just replace it. Come to the best games library in the market after the DS :D

Got an email today saying that my 360 is now at the service centre. But I got an email from UPS yesterday about it being shipped back to me on the 17th.

WTF? is the status page thingy just slow to update or something?

Ugh. So UPS finally delivered on Tuesday after some sort of delay + long weekend. Now the Xbox website still says they haven't received it.

Waiting for device at service center - We have processed your order and are waiting for your console to arrive at our service center. The total amount of time for your repair order depends on how quickly you send your console to us by using the shipping instructions that we included. Your console should be returned to you within 2 to 3 weeks of the date that you send it to us.

I'm going to buy a new 360, but all I can find are elites and used ones. I don't want an elite since I have a harddrive. How can I tell if a used one is one of the newer, less frequent to die ones? I only see a used Trusty Bell pack at my one store. Is that too old?

Falcons weren't out until around October 2007 I think. Trusty Bell came out in April 2007. Don't get it.

Trying to track down an Arcade unit is your best bet. Are they still selling out in Japan? O_o They went from December 05 - August 08 without selling their initial shipment and now they can't keep them in stock?

Some stores have elites but fuck that noise. I do live in the bumblefuck, so that makes things annoying, but yeah. I can't find a new arcade.

Well if Japan really didn't sell out of the initial shipment until recently, it'll be hard finding a used Falcon. Can't you get it from Amazon or something?

Stats coming in a bit... but before that I was looking at who had had most dead 360s reported in this thread and I've come up with an list.

Owners most hated by their 360s (5 or more dead):
6 dead - rs7k
5 dead - dot50cal
5 dead - firstinhell
5 dead - forgotten ancient
5 dead - painey
5 dead - vustadumas
5 dead - wickedlaharl

There may have been more in the thread, remember that these are just the people that I could work out when their machine died (or if it actually died). If you're in that list and the numbers are wrong, let me know. If you're not in the list and you've had five or more die on you... let me know when they all died so I can see what's missing off my list.

You're missing me. I've had 6 die. I'm waaaaaaay up there. Also, I got my "new" 360 back very quickly. I haven't called to cause a ruckus in order to get free stuff. I suppose I should.

I only have 2 listed for you. You've been slacking with your reporting! :lol

May 2007 (Pre extra detail)
September 2008 (Refurb - RRoD)

What's the details on the rest of them?

360 no.2 is down :(

Only got it repaired about 6 months ago. The gpu died, yet it refused to RROD on me so I had to pay £60 for repairs...

I'm currently contemplating on whether or not to just buy an Arcade unit... are they generally more reliable now?

As I tell everyone.... send that one for repairs, buy a new Arcade, keep your HDD of course, sell the refurbished console on Ebay. You get a new controller, and a MMU plus a free game and some live arcade games. :D

Ha sounds like a plan! Cheers :)

No prob. It's a wireless controller plus a 256MB MMU, which together is around a value of $65. The game is not much, but the value is around $25 and the packaged Live games are around a $25 value as well. So you are technically paying $85 for a brand new, Falcon or Jasper, Xbox 360. And you won't have to deal with refurbs for a while, if ever.**

**My Falcon died of One Ring, but it's because I live in Puerto Rico, usually hot temps, and I gave that machine a MAJOR constant use of over a 1000 hours in 10 months.

Cool, that sounds like a pretty decent option then, although of course there's no guarantee that someone on eBay will want my refurb...

Also, curiously, I just turned it on and it appears to be working fine again. I don't trust it though, since it had been freezing up randomly over the past few days anyway...

EDIT: crashed again!

It's gonna die. Just tell Microsoft that it RRODed.

ugh... every single bit of the 360 is built like shit. my fucking PSU fans are making a grinding noise which sounds like they are dying. i called CS and they want me to pay to ship the PSU back to them.

You really don't have much luck with this stuff do you. :lol

my PSU started to smell funny after about a year so i had to send it back :| i was still covered by warranty tho, so replacement was completely free.

a new one came after about a month or so shipped with standard mail. the parcel was almost destroyed :lol luckily the PSU was ok.

:)

nope. what really sucks is that when i sent my console that was DOA from repair they shipped me an extra PSU. however the new one they sent me (which is dying) has a two prong cord while my original PSU had a three prong cord... but when the repair center sent me back my original PSU along with the repaired console they didn't send the fucking cord back with it.

it took a MONTH to get it back? :|

i'm under warranty so they'll replace mine for free but it pisses me off that i'll have to ship to them on my own dime.

yup. it happened a couple of years ago so i don't remember well but i'm pretty sure it was around a month. MS repair service used to suck here in Europe around that time, not much later it took something like 50 days to get my 360 replaced.

anyway when i had to send it back they emailed me a label and i had to provide only the parcel. the one i used to send it back was a nice sturdy box. they shipped the new one back to me in one of those paper bags with plastic inside...

:)

Mine seems to be on it's way back. I shipped it to them on Monday and now it's Friday. They must have recently processed it since I don't even have a status yet on the UPS site. The quick turnaround screams refurb to me, fuck. Oh well, the damn thing better work correctly and look as nice as my old one did.

It's obviously going to be a refurb. Even if you got your own back it'd be a refurb...

Between them receiving it and shipping it back, less than a day.

Wow holy shit. I hope the guys at McAllen are that fax... but more importantly that they give me an Xbox as quiet and reliable as the one I had. It only started crashing on his last days =(. Poor dude fought all the way.

EDIT: Mine still hasn't gotten there. I see they put up the UPS information, I guess for the return of the console.

Finally sent mine in, count 2 for Riky.... frickin MS. Never had a console break once, been gamin since I was 6 and have been doing it for almost 18 years. 360 has broken down twice.... grrrr

I went to Best Buy last night to exchange my dead XBOX. Cause the price went down, they gave me $100 store credit for the difference. Score. I got one from lot 0828, made in July of 2008. It is SIGNIFICANTLY quieter. Not sure if it is a Jasper.

Hey, can you provide some info on roughly when these machines died / what killed them? I don't have any dead 360s from you in the stats.

Until last night I've had just about every problem save for RROD. Scratching discs, faulty drives that make an ungodly amount of racket before going kaputz (two instances), gpu overheating, chronic disc-read errors, and finally the irreverent red ring.

I don't think I've owned the same 360 unit longer than a year.

Device shipped to customer - Your console has been repaired or replaced. We are shipping it back to you.
Yay!

I got unlucky with this shipment. First it got delayed before a long weekend and arrived in Ontario on Friday. This meant it wouldn't get there until Tuesday... Then they only looked at it on Friday again which meant they couldn't ship it out until today.

Being sent back via Purolator Air.

My European Elite died today. Damn.
E74 message.
I called support, and received good service. To my surprise, it will be free of charge.
They said I will be getting the same console in return. I wonder if I really will. Sure hope that they make it magically quiet.
