Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

I get fed up with it definitely when a game's SLI profile doesn't come out at game launch, or when devs don't support it in their games fully. I cannot hate SLI when it makes games run so well.

But yeah, I think next time around I will be getting a very powerful single card with so much VRAM I can just forget about it. It would be nice to not have to play a waiting game with Nvidia profiles or dev support. :D BTW, oddly enough, I have not experienced any situation yet beyond metro redux where Tri-SLI doesn't scale really well. That surprised me quite a bit!

Tri SLI is less prone to microstuttering than two way as well, let's not forget. It's part of why I went that route.

I ordered a Shield tablet today. That should get here tomorrow. I'm looking forwards to giving that a whirl.

So I want to connect my TV to my 970 is addition to the multiple monitors I already have.

I still want my main monitor to be the primary screen but have games output to TV when it's connected. It would be annoying to have to switch the primary display every time I want to play. Swapping screens around always results in all my window settings getting screwed and sometimes windows end up stuck off screen.

Additionally I have a 3D monitor that I also sometimes use that I'd like to be able to swap to.

Any way to quickly swap which screen games open on without changing primary?

You will have to manually turn 3D on and off as it will default to 'discover' mode on a regular display. That said, further to what other people have said about Win + P it will remember which display you want to be the primary when you set it to Duplicate. So you can have your TV set as the primary display (using the 'clone from' option in the Nvidia drivers) and then when you set it back to your computer display your main computer display will go back to being the main screen.

cool no?

So? Can't you use the 6+2 cables on the card? Asking for myself too.

I'd like to know that too. This is my ps and I don't know if I have to buy an adaptor or not:

http://www.bequiet.com/en/powersupply/216

I'm using the 6+2 that is standard with my PSU, my old braided extension cables were just 6 pin.

I need to order a 8 pin or 6+2 pin extension as the cord from my PSU barely gets there and ruins the wire management and aesthetics of my case.

Damn, that DSR is taxing. I played Arkham Origins a little and my fps drops to the 20-28 range with everything on max settings and DSR on 4k res. While on 1080p I get above 70 fps.
Is there some settings I can drop that I won't notice any difference if I want to play with DSR on and get +60 fps or somewhat reasonable fps?

Good FPS taste and over the top management of PC aesthetics?

I knew I liked you.

Ordering braided cables is expensive.

Need a new 8 pin for the 970, my previous cables were 6 pin extensions.

Sorry guys I don't know as much about power supplies as I'd like so I have a question. Are you guys talking about the cables that start as 8 on the PSU then split off into 6 pin plus a little 2 pin on the side? That's what I've got.

Would there be any reason to buy an 8>8 cord versus the cords that split on the end into 6/2?

Edit: Nevermind now I see the post that it's mainly for cable management reasons!

No, it's the same.

If you don't have a 6+2 extension (only 6 pins) then you need to buy an adaptator.
Otherwise, 6+2 is absolutely fine if your GPU requires 8 pins.

If you guys are looking for a 970/980 and have a microcenter near by, I would give them a call. Their in store stock is not showing up online. Philly store had 970s and 980s. EVGA and MSI respectively (both non reference).

So I can confirm my MSI 970 has some coil whining, but it has only just done it just now when Windows System Assessment Tool (WinSAT) started running. I've not heard it in any games or anything else, so I'm not too worried atm.

The difference from a 570 to a 970 is insane. Think I might give BF4 another go, assuming it's somewhat fixed.

I'm (almost) the same. Got some coil whine for a few secs randomly without even running any games, no clue why. Haven't noticed it whilst running any games however.

Same jump as me, feels good.

Yep, those fps.

With all the reports I'm hearing of coil whine lately, it seems like manufacturers need to spend less time on silent cooling solutions and more time on trying to eliminate coil whine (especially on high-end products). Coil whine should not be a thing in 2014 :(

MSI GTX 980 Twin Frozr. No coil whine.

Card is an absolute tank. It gets to 60c pretty quick under heavy load, but never goes above 63c or so.

In an earlier post, I said that the MSI Gaming 4G GTX 970 did not work correctly with my Asus P8H67-V Motherboard.(i5 2500 cpu). With no bios updates to fix it, I was stuck. So, I ordered an Asus Maximus VII Hero Z97 motherboard and a Core i7 4790k. GTX 970 works perfect on it.

So yeah, seems there are some motherboards these cards simply won't work well with.

I had to update the bios to get mine to work on the X79 Asus Sabertooth. Guess i was lucky.

I was trying old games in 4k downsampled on the 970. Averaged 270fps on SSFIV. Ridiculous.

No coil whine on my reference 980.

I've went through a dozen or so cards over the past 5 years and none of them had coil whine, actually, unless I was running at insanely high FPS values ( like 1000 +). Forcing VSync would get rid of it.

Is this fine? Or pushing my card way too much? I want to push the clock from 1284 to around 1400-1500 range. I think the card/voltage can handle it.

EDIT: nope. did valley, cinebench, 3Dmark(fire strike) all crashed when I added +200 on the core clock. I can do +180 but dont want to put the card over the borders of being stable and not stable. Turned core to +150 and memory to + 350, there was not much of a noticeable difference in performance anyway. Would turn it all to factory settings once I upgraded to i5 or i7 pretty soon.

Probably posted but EVGA is now offering their free backplate promotion for EU and US (even though it was only EU initially but they expanded it) and bios updates for silent operation:

Just registered them and its asking me for an invoice to get the backplates for my 970s. Is this the receipt? I just tore my room up looking for it and looks like it might have accidentally got thrown away even though I have all the other receipts from the last few weeks of upgrading my rig.

Yeah, they need some proof of purchase. This is also for their warranty.

My Gigabyte 970 handles an overclocked boost to 1505-1530 MHz rather effortlessly. Doesn't make much of a difference over the default 1405 MHz, but it's an impressive-looking number. I am finding myself longing for something a bit stronger still... just barely short of maintaining 60 FPS in Watch Dogs and Crysis 3 on high settings, post-AA, and 2560x1440. Damn the ridiculous 980 pricing, I'm still at my pre-purchase stance of this release being extremely disappointing on a performance level; no faster than my old 780, just a few extra perks.

With my GTX 970, I'm seeing very little improvement in Wolfenstein TNO and the like. Still not a solid 60. Jumps from 45-60 all the time; definitely not smooth at all.

I've got a Phenom II X4 as CPU. Would that be holding me back?

Think so since its streaming the textures to the GPU?

well that CPU isn't very good.

Phenom II's are definitely getting long in the tooth. An upgrade might be a good idea.

THAT SAID, Not many games are that demanding on the processor these days, so it might not be the case. Could be not enough memory or something too.

Ah man that sucks, I had to order myself a SLI connector as it didn't come with my 970s so currently I have one idle for the next one-two days. Booo!

I'm assuming you got it from a brick and mortar store? Otherwise, I was gonna say if you got it online, you could get another from there.

I'm running 12GB DDR3 1600. Don't think that's the issue. Faaaairly confident it's the CPU, but not sure how to test it.

Won't be able to afford to upgrade the CPU any time soon either. Ugh.

Yeah, SLI bridges come with the motherboard. Crossfire bridges come with cards or at least they did before moving to bridge-less setup.

I'm probably being dumb but how do you use/enable the down-sampling feature on these cards? I booted up the Geforce experience but I don't have any game that seem to support it?

Wolfenstein was a (for no observable reason) very heavy CPU game. Considering how undynmic the environs are... I am not sure what pushes the CPU so hard.

i have a phenom II X4 810. It's definately the cpu lol. Old and crusty.

well that CPU isn't very good.

Whoa whoa Whoa. Never say That about a Phenom II 955, such a good set of processors.

Compare your CPU performance to your GPU during a benchmark test. See if your processor is running at ~100% usage, while not using all of your 970's capability.

I was going to ask if Wolfenstein is a processor heavy game, seems that question is already answered.

Once you enable DSR in the geforce experience all it does is unlock higher selectable resolutions in games. In the game menu you can pick the higher resolution and it will down sample.

If you have an Nvidia GPU you can force the game to use all available CUDA cores for texture transcoding (vt_useCudaTranscode 2). This will lessen the burden on the CPU.
