PS4 System Software Preview – USB Music Player, New Home Screen Colors, More

This update sounds like it's at least a step in the right direction. A very slow, small step but a step nonetheless. The 'Add To Library' for PS+ games is a nice touch.
 
USB works as a baby step, but of course DLNA is the best way to go.

Suspend/Resume needs an update.

And yet, still no release date scheduled for 2.0?

Possibly stupid question - can I recharge dualshocks with any USB device? I use both front-facing ports right now - one for my headphones and one to charge a second controller. Once 2.0 hits I'll want to free up one of em for custom soundtracks.
 
I'm not too enthusiastic about their "folder" description. Sounds like you get the old setup (a bunch of crap in a row), and then a folder where everything else goes. Is it really that hard to let me create a folder structure that suits how I play my games?
 
Colours are nice but I wanted MY OWN wallpapers, why u no let me save shit on my harddrive Sony!?
But seriously anyone else remember Simple, Personalised, Immediate, Integrated, Social?
because for a year and foreseeable future it seems Simple, Social is all we getting, pull yourself together Sony.
The USB thing is worrying, looks like native local media support for anything isn't coming.
 
I for one am incredibly glad for this news. My PS4 can finally compete where it really matters: OS functionality.
Since PS4 has no games™, I've been spending much of my time with the machine flicking through applications and looking at the Settings menu. Now that they've added the ability to change my PS4s background as well as letting me listen to music, they've increased the ways that I can interact with my console exponentially.

Microsoft be looking at this like "Aww hell, PS4 is back in the game".

Seriously though, some pretty nice features with this. Especially the "People you may know" feature, since I'm terrible at socializing and haven't gone round asking friends if they have a PS4 so my friends list is like... two.

I can't say I care about any of these updates. Things I want;

Let me upload pictures directly from the PS4, no USB transfer nonsense.
Separate games and apps in the crossbar. Having one giant, unorganized bar is dumb
Pause downloads
Suspend/Resume
DNLA support
Bluetooth headset support
Organize/Categorization friends list

This holy fuck. I want to download DC Universe Online but it's 29gig + a 11gig patch. Let me pause shit FFS.

MS has most of those features (or will soon). I still can't believe we can't change our user names. People who have racist or inappropriate usernames are forced by Sony to change their names, why can't we all do it? Even if we have to pay $10.

You're right,nthose are big ticket items we've been waiting a long time for (suspend/resume since launch..), but I think it is fair to give credit for them adding useful features like background music playback.
 
Awesome! Looks like its gonna be a "Meaty" update after all, pretty awesome.
I'll probably change the background colour, so thats awesome.
Music player is welcome too, but was hoping for video player by now and DLNA...but I'm more forgiving with them adding share play, which seems quite a big feature...

Intrigued to learn more about the content sorting...does this mean folders are included or not yet...

Hoping it improves loading times for stuff too... I notice friend list/message list are loading a lot more slowly recently.

I don't think Username changes will come any time soon. Also I think they are trying to design the system around not needing folders. I wish they had more friend list upgrades though.
 
Man, what an awesome update. Play your own tunes? Going to be great to finally be able to do that again, especially while playing Driveclub.



Now we wait for Media Server capabilities and other than changing PSN Name, most of the bigger features will be off the list.

Should be able to - I charge mine with the official stand which connects to a normal mains charger.
