Xbox One Available for $349 in the U.S. This Holiday Season

This.

2015 is looking mighty bare and it's not like there's a ton of first party studios working on unannounced games.

Agreed.

I assumed this was why some are seemingly so desperate to push that "best exclusives of the rest of this year" narrative (Which isn't even true, because Wii U has those, but I digress.). Xbox One's 2015 at present looks truly dire.

Gonna be rough going for some next year.

Should add the part about it being valid through January 3rd, 2015 to the OP. I thought this was only like a week or two long deal. Instead it's a couple of months and means I can wait until Black Friday when they'll make the deal even better.

Interesting that it's not a permanent price cut... Will probably come some time next year right?

Nice to see MS at least gunning for it.

I guess that depends on their financials. Sony isn't as able to shrug off $50+/unit like Microsoft can. They may decide to let things go however they go on. The system is selling roughly a million a month and is profitable.

Seeing as this is a limited time offer from MS, I don't see why Sony couldn't do it as well.

Kinda lame that the bundled games are all digital. Generally when the kids open a new console on Xmas they're gonna wanna play it right away, not wait til the next day for the 50GB download to finish.

Then again, with all of the games being M-rated, maybe MS didn't intend for kids to get Xboxes at all...

Do what people did with the Wii U update, open it before Christmas and get all the downloads done.

The kids will be playing angry birds on their new iphone 6s, dad will be the one waiting for his game to DL.

I wouldn't count on the limited time thing to be so limited. They just want to make people believe that it's limited to instill a sense of urgency. They want the numbers, but they badly want those numbers in November and December.

I have nothing to back this up. It just makes sense to me.

Hehehehehehe, I paid $500 for mine and got a DAY ONE achievement!

:/

Saltiness aside, hope they can sell a lot of consoles this holiday season.

Yeah I'm a bit salty myself I supported them at launch and they have given us nothing.

I called about my broken play and charge kit last month and they did nothing to assist me other than tell me it has a 90 day warranty.

It's more than lame, it's terrible. It should be fun right out of the box. How in the world do they think that's ok?

All things equal I'll be interested in an XBO when it hits the ~200€ mark. Already own a PS4 and the two machines are just too similar.

Best case scenario would be the new Fable (loved Fable 2) or Quantum Break (gameplay is a bit soandso so far) turning out to be Uncharted 2 levels of system seller. Then I'll pay whatever it'll cost at that exact moment.

I'd be all over this if there were some exclusives coming out in the first half of 2015 but it's really sparse. I was close to choosing the sunset bundle but I'm gonna wait till next fall to grab a bone.

I decided on the wii u this fall since there's a nice backlog of things I want to play for it plus exclusives are looking better than ms in the first half of next year.

Is console price (within reason) still an issue? By that I mean is a $50 promotion really going to matter at Christmas when someone is going to maybe pick up 2 or 3 games (bundled or not) with a console?

Sure, you don't want it to be a race to the bottom but I thought that the attach rate was the key driver over the lifetime of a generation.

I would be less worried if I was MS trying to argue (internally) for financial support to prop up a sales discount for Christmas then if I was Sony doing the same.

If consoles are bought at Christmas and I would theorise that many of those consoles go to one console families then wont they pick up more games in the holiday period that will contribute to the $50 drop? Is that the gamble MS are taking here?

I think Sony could afford to do the same. I'm almost positive their base cost is lower than MS's, and the hardware has been profitable since May.

I think the question is "will Sony do it?". Its going to come down to whether they think its necessary or not. I think that's really hard to call. Customers are resonding to MS's promotions, but not in a way that really threatens Sony. MS gave away a free game for a week in September, thats over $50 value, and PS4 still won the month in HW sales 2-1.

Good for people already planning to buy a X1, but this won't be enough to change people's mind if they are already leaning / getting a PS4. $50 is not going to remotely change the PS4's momentum and it's mind-share will continue to increase.

Sony could price drop the PS4, but they have zero reason to. If the sale well dries out, then they will start doing it. It will probably not be until 2016 till we see a price drop.

Will this be the one-two punch that equals the playing field, sales-wise? I don't know about Sunset Overdrive in terms of sales (through it seems critically acclaimed so far), but the MCC is sure going to move a lot of boxes.

Say it with me: November NPD is going to be very interesting.

I wonder if Sony will respond with a free year of PS+ with every PS4, or similar.

If MS doesn't come out front with these bundles during November and December then I have no idea what they can do to win.
However, I wounder if Sony will do anything to counter this, or if they feel they need to.

MS doesn't need to win to be successful. They need to grow the install base to be successful. And this will help.

Sony, for what it's worth, don't need to do anything. They have a huge lead and Microsoft winning two months ian't going to close that gap.

That said, I think Sony will do similar.

Oh my...

Anyway, good deal.

They need to get under the £300 here in the UK. £299 for Christmas would, I'm sure, shift some units.

I know Europe is pretty much Sony-Land, but they should aim to do something, though I completely understand about being aggressive in the US first. I don't think they'll ever catch up with Sony over here, but there's still potential consumers available.

God... after I had just put aside my want for an X1 this holiday season Microsoft has to do this. 50$ off for all of the bundles is a hell of a good deal, so tempting... so very very tempting...

I really don't get the "limited time promotion". Just make the price drop fucking official already. It's clearly got to happen at this point.

Regardless, it's good to see them being aggressive, even if I don't think it's quite aggressive enough.

Shots fired. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Microsoft is clearly trying to gain ground in their key market. One would hope Sony doesn't just sit on it's laurels, because MS could cut the gap big time this Christmas.

Well, they would not only have to beat the PS4 in sales in the last few months of the year to "cut the gap big time" in total sales, but beat the PS4 each month by hundreds of thousands of sales.

You understand what you are saying right?

it will be. they'll issue a PR statement saying that because of overwhelming demand they decided to stick with it. this way, it doesn't look like a knee jerk reaction to being outsold for the last few months

It's absolutely necessary for Sony to match this promotion during the heaviest shopping period of the year. Something like this could easily push Xbone to #1 in the US. It would only be for a couple of months anyway.
