Nintendo Amiibo Look a Bit Different in Final Production vs. Advertised

Maybe I'm missing something, but they look more or less the same to me, taking into account the difference in angle and lighting. Peach is the only one who looks different -- her eyes seem a bit closer together -- and even then she seems fine.

Also seems like the gold inlay on her dress is brighter, but yeah they all look pretty much the same to me

I'm only really interested in Kirby from the first wave.

They still look fine to me, but then I was expecting a downgrade like this. Gimme Luigi, Mega Man, Ike, Pac-Man and Dr. Mario :3

Honestly, for mass produced $13 figures, they're okay
Except for the yellow poles, seriously, WTF?.
I figured the ones at E3 would not be the same quality as the ones we got. I understand the complaints, but am equally surprised that people had high expectations for the quality of the designs

Okay, this cracked me up

I think the more realistic looking ones like Link and Marth look pony. Saw them in person at Hyper Japan in July and was kinda turned off. Having said that, the other characters still look great imo.

They look fine for what you're paying. The only ones that look odd are Marth and Peach. Donkey Kong looks good

*shrugs*

I expected this already, and aside from the ugly yellow support thing for Link they look alright.

Plus, it's the first time Ness merchandise will come out in America. I can't possibly skip out on that!

The only one that disappoints me is the Link one, only because of the yellow pole (still probably my first one I get), for 15 dollar toys I still don't think they look that bad at all.

My first impression of those photos was "Chinese knock-offs already?".

Yes it is true I'm ignorant of how much kids toys cost (plus the whole prototype bullshots > mass produce garbage) but from what I remember the following Fire Emblem figures cost <$15 each (you can find them for a lot less now):
http://myfigurecollection.net/blog/17356
Now they are about twice the size of an Amiibo for anyone curious and it might not be a full fair comparison because they are multi-part (even Sylvia, you have to attach her to the base IIRC) and, as you see in the first picture durability is not the strong point of those by a long shot (the legs on Levin are a particular weak point). I don't remember seeing a quality drop either. Then again the promo shots were not very good.

Speaking of durability, frankly I don't think putting a cast on Wii fit trainers right foot is going to help the rest of her limbs...

But ultimately it comes down to the fact the smash bros design really is not suitable for these sorts of things. Notice how Disney and Skylanders are much more geometric and chubby/chibi the reason being it is easier to produce good results.

Lighting, how does it work.
Drive by replies, how does it work? You don't need any lighting to tell that a sword is bent or a dress has its detail painted on vs engraved.

What's up wtih Marth's word?
To be a little vulgar it is not quite fully erect. A common problem with swords these days.

For comparison, here's a Skylander Trapmaster Wallop. It's $15, but it also gives you a character for use in Skylanders vs an AI buddy/training partner, so I'm not sure if that adds more value to the cost or what versus the opposite. Skylanders stuff also goes on sale pretty often too.

What looks like a RENDER from Amazon's store page :

What seems like the final product in two different lighting conditions (not 100% sure though that they're both final versions, so if anyone could confirm that'd be nice) :

Thanks for this. I feel bad I need someone to point out the difference. Either way looks a lot better than the Amiibo do.

Also, wtf BLUE stand on Fox.
Maybe it is the angle but since when was Fox a Fire Emblem Awakening character (or were his feet always hooves?)

What's curious to me is the fact that apparently the figures that came with Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver look better than the Amiibos, not to mention they were free if you preordered.
These are mine:
I like to think it just comes down to the design being more suited to toys rather than a maximise the profit margins by cutting everything else (though that would explain things...like how Iwata thinks these will make huge profit)

Seriously, holy shit. These are 15 dollar toys. There are a lot of other things to get outraged about that rank higher than this.
True but a lot of people really had their expectations set high by how great the prototypes looked and yes a lot of these people otherwise didn't collect toys so had no idea bullshot was the name of the game. (that also goes for you drive bys who are like "omg prodact look betr than real thing mcdonalts.jpg. noose at 11. i'm so smrt")

Actually after hearing a comment about durability in this video I think that might explains some of the thicker plastics being used here. A lot of these will be in kids' hands, they've gotta hold up in a way a nicer figurine might not have to.
Wait a second, are all the images in the OP just screen captures from that video?

Also they said "almost as good as Disney infinity series 1". Any fans of that and skylanders like to say how they compare. Currently to me it is looking like Amiibo are the worst out of those three, when being the new kids on the block they need to try the hardest. Especially because of how unclear their functionality is*, especially in the long term in the context of compatibility with multiple games (with a Skylander it is obvious all of them will work on the next game while Smash currently is unclear that Zelda will work in Hylrule Warriors let along Zeldar Scrolls).

*-And the overall quality makes it hard to justify buying them as good looking figures.

The cartoony characters look great (except for that Kirby's weird eyes, which I have to imagine is not going to be the norm). But most of the humanoids look kinda bad. I hope that it'll be better in a second run, but I'm not too optimistic.

If you can't see the obvious downgrade in quality here...well, I both pity and envy you. Really disappointing output from Nintendo, especially given they continue to advertise the products looking completely different from what they actually do.

Cancelled my pre-order last night.

People were expecting hand painted prototype figures with NFC and memory for $13.

Nintendo should have put those Pikmin to work.
Well I ink it's more of false promises. Nintendo when they first reveal a game it might look meh but by the time it releases it has all the polish. I get that it's a mass produced figured but if the final design isn't like the prototype they should be posting what they really look like on the order pages. Mario & Pikachu look okay but I think I might cancel the others as well. I don't have that kind of money anyway and let hype get the better of me. Thanks GAF.

I think Links yellow stool is the only issue.

The rest look identical to me, aside from Wii Fit Trainer who has extra added support om her foot.

Professional studio pictures in ideal lighting conditions by a professional photographer look better than a smartphone snapshot in poorly lit room? No way!

Had the pictures been taken from the same angles, that would have helped too.

What exactly is an amiibo? Just toys?

They work with NFC, and store game content. For instance, if you have a Mario Amiibo, and play with Mario in Super Smash Bros, you can "train" your Amiibo. Bring your Amiibo to your friends house, and you can play with a "better" version of Mario, since you already "trained" it. Somtehing like that. They should be used in upcoming games too. Basically Nintendo's take on Skylanders and Disney Infinity.

Okay, so I know this is ridiculous but I do currently have all the figures pre-ordered. Literally all of them.

However, now that I've seen the final quality... Well, I probably won't cancel all my pre-orders but I'll probably just stick to my few favorite characters.

I guess I didn't know what to expect from mass-produced figures, but the few figures that I did purchase in the past few years did end up looking like what I expected, like my Figma Link and Medicom "Ultra Detail" NES Link and Mario figures. But those Medicom figures were cheaper than the Amiibo figures, so I don't know...

(like fucked up Kirby eyes).

Do you guys not see Pikachu and Kirby's lazy eyes?

Those...look a lot less worth $15. Kirby's eyes...
.

what is everyone complaining about with Kirby's eyes? look like the promo shot to me.
slightly off centered? hard to tell with blurry focus and if the angle really is straight on or not.

regardless the only big difference I see, outside some non perfect paint, and support changes, are peaches fingers, and top of her other hand. I am guessing these details/fixes were photoshoped for ther Promo(or special one offs). I think tere is a simliar issue pointed out with Zelda's hair in previous threads.

Will have to see them in person myself to make a judgment call. I'm pretty picky about faces on these things, but for the price, it's not surprising that some don't look at nice as the pre-production ones. Hopefully it *is* the lighting/angles, though.

I had considered buying these just to display on my desk, but I'm a lot less tempted now. Specifically that yellow support beam on Link looks really terrible. The Yoshi and Mario ones still look alright though.

Yeah, a couple of them look fine. Trouble is, the OCD and completionist in me is on the "all or nothing" train with this. Buying only a couple of them will be like having an itch that needs scratching.

I'm gonna hold off, and hope that the outcry is enough that future shipments might be a but higher quality. If that's not the case, which is much more likely, I'll wait for them to go on a buy one get one sale or something.

I don't really know what anyone was expecting. Honestly, the quality isn't that big of a difference between the advertised and the mass produced units. Lower, but it's slight. I don't think these were ever intended to be super high quality replicas for collectors, but just figurines for kids to use with their games.

If you're looking for high quality figures, I'm sure FigureGAF can point you in the right direction. If you want to use amiibos in games, these will definitely suffice.

No. Peach doesn't even have engraving on her final version...its just paint. Also the the stand placement and materials used have been replaced. Now Link has a tower of piss coming out the front of his tunic rather than a normal back placed stand behind him. Additionally the molds were changed for less detail work for cheaper production. Peach used to have legs...now they are fused into a block of plastic in the shape of her skirt and her hands are pudgier and less detailed because solid single cast molding takes less time and allows for faster production and fast single casting like that tends to lose some details...thus the hands.

Sad thing is, as much as this craftsmanship quality decrease bugs me its the most minor issue regarding Amiibo on the market. The problem with these is that there is NO clear value in owning them. No one gives a shit about raising them for a better AI opponent. We have AI opponents and online...why pay for another that you have to raise? The only decent thing is you can get more parts and items from using them, but there are already methods of doing that which are free and likely take less work in the long run.

Amiibos simply don't have a clear value like Disney Infinity or Skylanders figures. With those you know you will be getting a new character to play or parts to use in the Toybox mode. You know you are getting bonuses and such with power tokens...Amiibo's dont come with ANYTHING. You have to raise them to get stuff thats already in the game without them. They are supposed to work with other titles but nothing has been outlined. Nintendo has really and truly failed with these. They need to have their own EXCLUSIVE content to make them sell otherwise its just going to tank. ESPECIALLY since the quality of production in them already looks less than the quality of production found in Skylanders and Disney Infinity.

Unless Nintendo is making a Disney Infinity style game where having played your Amiibos in other titles to level them with skills and abilities for "Nintendo Infinity" is happening, then there is no reason to care about Amiibos and using them on any games currently.
This has pretty much been my thoughts from the beginning.

It's kind of interesting to see a toy line launch from the perspective of a group of people who have never seen a toy line launch.

It's more interesting seeing a group of people to ignore a much better similar toy line (skylanders) to protect their precious company under the excuses of lighting and similar lolworthy arguments.

Other Toys Too ™ defense is strong in this thread.

These look downright cheap and in some cases like a flea market knock off of those original E3 reveal shots, difference in lighting or not. But they are only $15 so I doubt you would get anything too extravagant for that price out of penny pinching Nintendo so I am not entirely shocked.

Marth looks like a confused woman looking for direction, with a bent umbrella (too rounded to be a sword)

Link has a stream of piss coming from his leg. Seriously why is the support so amber/yellow?

Mario looks like he's playing with a loogie.

That Marth sword seriously cracks me up. Its cool though, I'll just get some good figures and an Amiibo and then break the NFC chip out of the Amiibo and install it in a higher end one. Problem solved. You know, if your definition of problem solving is spending extra money and time on something for no reason.

Seriously I am wondering what people will end up doing with amiibos as far as taking them apart and stuff, NFC chips are usually super easy to remove from products without damaging the chips so I wonder if people will end up doing anything cool. Off the top of my head I'm thinking people might remove them and install them in their controllers instead and things like that.

Yeah, I was going to spend my dough on a few just to have a figurine of said character (when are we ever gonna get Fire Emblem merchandise around here?), but some of these.. yeah it changed my mind.

Kirby still looks cute though, 'crooked eyes' or not. I'ma get that one first.

Gonna keep my Wii Fit trainer amiibo pre order open.

I'm not sure what the be fit is of having more than one is tho.

I'll keep an eye out on the quality of these guys. They're just cheap enough for an impulse buy from me so if one doesn't look terrible of probably grab it

Honestly, I was hoping they were going to be the same quality as the Pokémon Trading Figures. Those kinda set a bar for me in terms of figures that came from game properties.

I'm sure they need to make way more Amiibos than what they sold of the Pokémon game but I don't think it's an excuse. Seal of Quality or GTFO.

It's a drop, but they don't look too bad...except for the piss yellow pole on Link. That's atrocious.

Never heard of Figmas, those look cool.
