My first impression of those photos was "Chinese knock-offs already?".
Yes it is true I'm ignorant of how much kids toys cost (plus the whole prototype bullshots > mass produce garbage) but from what I remember the following Fire Emblem figures cost <$15 each (you can find them for a lot less now):

Now they are about twice the size of an Amiibo for anyone curious and it might not be a full fair comparison because they are multi-part (even Sylvia, you have to attach her to the base IIRC) and, as you see in the first picture durability is not the strong point of those by a long shot (the legs on Levin are a particular weak point). I don't remember seeing a quality drop either. Then again the promo shots were not very good.
Speaking of durability, frankly I don't think putting a cast on Wii fit trainers right foot is going to help the rest of her limbs...
But ultimately it comes down to the fact the smash bros design really is not suitable for these sorts of things. Notice how Disney and Skylanders are much more geometric and chubby/chibi the reason being it is easier to produce good results.
Lighting, how does it work.
Drive by replies, how does it work? You don't need any lighting to tell that a sword is bent or a dress has its detail painted on vs engraved.
What's up wtih Marth's word?
To be a little vulgar it is not quite fully erect. A common problem with swords these days.
For comparison, here's a Skylander Trapmaster Wallop. It's $15, but it also gives you a character for use in Skylanders vs an AI buddy/training partner, so I'm not sure if that adds more value to the cost or what versus the opposite. Skylanders stuff also goes on sale pretty often too.
What looks like a RENDER from Amazon's store page :
What seems like the final product in two different lighting conditions (not 100% sure though that they're both final versions, so if anyone could confirm that'd be nice) :
Thanks for this. I feel bad I need someone to point out the difference. Either way looks a lot better than the Amiibo do.
Also, wtf BLUE stand on Fox.
Maybe it is the angle but since when was Fox a Fire Emblem Awakening character (or were his feet always hooves?)
What's curious to me is the fact that apparently the figures that came with Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver look better than the Amiibos, not to mention they were free if you preordered.
These are mine:
I like to think it just comes down to the design being more suited to toys rather than a maximise the profit margins by cutting everything else (though that would explain things...like how Iwata thinks these will make huge profit)
Seriously, holy shit. These are 15 dollar toys. There are a lot of other things to get outraged about that rank higher than this.
True but a lot of people really had their expectations set high by how great the prototypes looked and yes a lot of these people otherwise didn't collect toys so had no idea bullshot was the name of the game. (that also goes for you drive bys who are like "omg prodact look betr than real thing mcdonalts.jpg. noose at 11. i'm so smrt")
Actually after hearing a comment about durability in
this video I think that might explains some of the thicker plastics being used here. A lot of these will be in kids' hands, they've gotta hold up in a way a nicer figurine might not have to.
Wait a second, are all the images in the OP just screen captures from that video?
Also they said "almost as good as Disney infinity series 1". Any fans of that and skylanders like to say how they compare. Currently to me it is looking like Amiibo are the worst out of those three, when being the new kids on the block they need to try the hardest. Especially because of how unclear their functionality is*, especially in the long term in the context of compatibility with multiple games (with a Skylander it is obvious all of them will work on the next game while Smash currently is unclear that Zelda will work in Hylrule Warriors let along Zeldar Scrolls).
*-And the overall quality makes it hard to justify buying them as good looking figures.
