Blizzard announces Overwatch. Team based MP Shooter [Up: Trailers, Screens, More]

I'm kind of disappointed. I thought Titan was going to be a really ambitious project.

They seem more interested in smaller scale projects these days (hearthstone and now this). Guess it's probably good business - just not what I expected.

This isnt Titan though. At best its some pieces of Titan Blizzard thought worth saving.

Free Dota is a steam trojan horse. It's not a model that every company should or can follow.

I wouldn't say so. Dota definitely pays for itself and generates a ton of revenue besides. We know they made like $30 million just from one virtual item. There are other reasons why Dota's model wouldn't work for a lot of games, but trojan horse ain't one.

How is League's model worse than having to pay $60?

League gets away with it because characters are pretty interchangable in their role so you arent missing out by not having multiple AD carries or whatever. Best models are cosmetic microtransactions followed by Smite's model, which is basically league's model but you can get all the gods present and future if you pay a lump price. So you have real options, not grind forever or pay a shit ton to unlock everyone.

I don't know. It looks nice, but for a balanced Team Shooter, it sounds like way too much classes n shit. Maybe I think too much into it tho. If it's F2P I'll probably try it, but it'll have a hard time to be better than TF2. Or Quake, depending on what style you like.

I like the character designs and personality they're going for with this after watching a few videos. Roster looks distinct and interesting while still managing to be cohesive in tone, almost like the cast of a fighting game. Even if Overwatch pulls ideas from a lot of established sources (including Blizzard games) it's nice to see a burst of creativity from that studio after being dormant for so long.

Steam is the trojan horse, you've got it backwards. Dota2 makes bushels of money off of cosmetics. It isn't some sort of loss-leader for Valve just to promote Steam. Did you notice how much money was dumped into the last International by fans?

If a game is going to be F2P I prefer for it to be this model, where nothing but cosmetics are behind the paywall. Where there is no pay2win.

As far as other companies being able to follow that model the only limitation is the quality and mass appeal of their games.

If Overwatch isn't F2P I would be disinclined to buy it. I don't want to have to keep paying for expansions now that there are many other good F2P games that have new content on a regular basis without having to buy an expansion, without having those expansions fragment the community. Let the whales pay.

Looks so generic currently from the videos and shots, but I will wait to play it before I actually judge the game as a buy or not

MMO champion is posting that stuff so i guess it's ok to share this?

Even more characters teased.

I kind of dig that this game's been developed and is playable and is ready for beta soon, and Blizzard (if it's to believed) still doesn't know how what the business model for it will be. If that's the truth, than the game design isn't necessarily being fully informed by the model for how it'll be sold, and I think that's good for the game. They're just concentrated on making a good game, not making a good F2P game. You know?

No freckles in the ingame model, 2/10. :(
edit: hahahah someone made the same comment before

Position-wise, wouldn't they be obscured by the frame of the goggles on the right? :)

it's a different angle, goggles might just be covering the freckles. anyway I love the art and hero designs. can't wait to try this game

just saw this, looks VERY charming design wise and I'm loving what I see in the video. will diffidently keep an eye out for this. one question (and sorry if it's been answer before but I can't read through the whole thread), are all the characters set or can you pick the same one as someone else? (i.e. if there's already a Tracker on my team do I have to pick someone else or can a team have more then one of the same character?) and is it always going to be Reaper, Widowmaker and such vs Winston, Tracker + buddies? like can I mix and match teams so I have Hanso and Reaper on the same team and such?

Completely flexible. They said that part of the reason there is no campaign is because it would be incohesive to have the same character multiple times on the same map. Also, you can switch character with every spawn, so there is a lot of potential for dynamic match-ups.

Edit: Lol at dodging that question btw.

Free Dota is a steam trojan horse. It's not a model that every company should or can follow.

From a consumer standpoint, of course they should. It literally makes the game significantly better. Monetary-wise, the jury's out. Most people playing Dota own no other Steam games, and Dota by itself is ridiculously profitable even without people purchasing other stuff on Steam. I think this argument is a complete misfire.

Especially in the case of Blizzard, who is not a company begging for bread.

So the first question was about diversity given the number of women and minorities in the initial roster. Metzen's answer was basically "yes we want people to be able to identify so we're going for a very diverse cast".

Another thing to be excited about.

cool~! thanks for the reply.

LOL a guy asked about hats and one of the blizz devs instantly facepalmed :lol

It's not a situation that can be applied to other developers. Name others with the same model that are anywhere near as successful.

So I've heard this game feels MOBA-like, what makes people say that?

It might not feel like a MOBA but definitely looks like one with all the character archetypes (sexy female sniper/outlaw cowboy guy/cyborg ninja/Japanese samurai type). And the fact that you choose a character rather than a class means your abilities will be unique to that character. So two tanks will play differently but fulfil the same role.

More cinematic pixar-ish trailers like the reveal trailer confirmed!

DAT TF2 SHOUTOUT!

TF2 is one of Kaplan's favorite games of all time.

Fuck the game, I wanna watch a feature movie about this. Blizzard still kings of cinematic trailers.

Totally agree. That cinematic trailer was pixar quality. Amazing what blizzard does. Game also looks like fun. But I don't play multiplayer shooters so I will most probably skip it. But I'm sure this thing is going to make a lot of money.

If this works out I could see myself playing hanzo or tracer a lot. I love finesse characters.

also Reaper seems like a direct pull from Equilibrium

pewpewpew gunkata.
